The Coming Palin Backlash

Sure, as you can see from the rec list, the idea that John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate would boost his support among hordes of Clinton's disaffected female supporters is a miscalculation at best. CNN ran a piece that featured a[...]

THE EXPERIENCE DODGE.

Watching the McCain flacks in a continual state of meltdown on CNN, it's striking how swiftly their central defense of Palin is backfiring. When the anchors question her experience -- 19 months in the Alaska statehouse, and before that the mayoralty of[...]

Witnessing History

The three DK editors who set out for Invesco Field yesterday got their chance to stand in a line six miles long (no exaggeration), but they also got a chance to share sunscreen, water, and good humor with the others in that line. Once inside, our seats were... less than terrific. We were in the lesser rungs of the print media section, which meant sitting behind the CNN and ABC booths, with only a peephole sized spot through which we could get a glimpse of the podium. We got a better view of the speakers by twisting around to see the "Jumbotron" than we did by looking toward the stage.

Really, those at home and the editors back at the Big Tent had a better view. Except... except...

That image is of the folks inside CNN's booth -- the techs and crew that helped the booth operate. At the moment Obama began speaking, even though they were sitting behind CNN's own cameras, they produced their personal cameras, help them up and started to take pictures. The same thing happened next door at the ABC booth, and at CBS, and around the curve at FOX. Each of these people was there to do a job, but they realized they were witnessing history, and they wanted to connect with it in a personal way. They wanted an image of their own to mark the occasion -- something they could look at and say "I was there, I was really there, the day Barack Obama delivered his acceptance speech."

I was there. It was glorious.

Presidential Forecast - 8/24 - Pre-Convention
Snapshot

This is just a quick snapshot of the race on the Saturday before the convention, the day Biden was announced as the VP nominee. It only incorporates changes from FHQ, Elec-Vote, Rasmussen and OpenLeft. (If anybody kept a snapshot of Elec Proj, RCP, or 538 for 8/24, please email or leave in the comments, and we will update).

Obama leads 289-249, a loss of 2 EVs from our last forecast. With both state and national polls tightening, this was not unexpected. The main driver of the change was Rasmussen, which moved 6 states in McCain's direction.

Please also check out our Senate Forecast and House Forecast.

Unanimous solid states, not shown in the table below:
Solid Obama: CA, CT, DC, HI, IL, MA, MD, RI, VT - 119 EVs. Note: NY is no longer unanimous Obama-Strong (Elec-Vote has it at OL), but has not been placed on the chart at this time. (All numbers, however, are correct).
Solid McCain: AL, AZ, ID, KS, KY, MS, NE, OK, TN, UT, WY - 74 EVs.

The sources are sorted by each projection's estimate of Obama's Electoral Votes (Algorithm at bottom). The states are sorted by the number of electoral votes.

Monica Goodling For President

Where are these profound expressions of surprise coming from? While John McWeirdsmile’s vice-presidential pick wasn’t what was expected, it’s no surprise, no surprise that a Republigoat would select as the number two executive of the nation an inexperienced noob who nonetheless relentlessly carries water for the party’s Dark Ages world view. Let’s revisit a now [...]

Miss Congeniality (No, Really) For Attack Dog

Seriously. But the former beauty queen is known as Sarah Barracuda, so this dog has teeth. Not that she’s a dog or anything — she’s purrty, yep. As long as Biden remains the gentleman he is, there should be no worries at their debate. I hope.Meanwhile, I continue to marvel at how out of [...]
