Convention Report: OMG, it's Willard!

Hmm, what's wrong with this picture?

by Ken

Well, I sure didn't see that one coming. Those crazy R's actually went and nominated Willard Inc.! Just as a matter of plotting, it seemed too obvious, too predictable. If I were a betting person, I would have put my money on . . . um . . . maybe that cool Rick Santorum? Or maybe a hopelessly deadlocked convention turning to, say, T-Paw?

Now as to the No. 2 slot, I know there's been a lot of talk about this creepy Paul Ryan fellow, including somebody at the Miami Herald who (I saw somewhere online) described him as young, good-looking, and something else, which I don't recall probably because of that "good-looking." "Good-looking"??? As compared with whom, the Elephant Man? You know who would be good? How 'bout that T-Paw? Or there's always that Marco Rubio, which would be good for him because if he gets elected maybe the R's can protect him from being indicted. At least he's better-looking than that Ryan troll.

As I've made clear, I don't intend to watch any of the Republican convention -- or the Democratic one, for that matter. I gather, though, that Chris "Fats" Christie cracked wise about his weight, and "Sunny John" Boehner thinks it would be a good idea to throw Obama out. Do those R's have charisma, or what?

[For some fun with Willard, check out Garry Wills's NYRB blogpost "Romney's Taxes in a Poke," in which he likens Willard's determination to keep his finances stashed away to the attempts of pig-sellers of old to keep the critter they were selling at bargain price in the proverbial "poke," or burlap bag. "Why," he asks, "would anyone be stupid enough to submit to the condition that he not open a bag and inspect its merchandise before purchasing it?" And then, "Can he pull it off? He seems to think so. He must agree with Mencken that no one goes broke underestimating the American intelligence."]

IN THE END, IS THIS HOW
THE RACE WILL BE DECIDED?

Stupid Right-Wing Tweets: Donald Trump Edition

enlargedonald.jpg

Why do you people keep insisting Republicans have a problem with women?

Take The Combover. When he's not peddling racist dog whistles, The Combover likes to tweet bald-faced lies -- and, apparently now, misogyny.

But this tweet is an especially awesome two-fer: a little gay bashing (if only Ariana had been hotter, Michael wouldn't have "turned gay") to go with the woman bashing.

Way to keep it classy, Republicans.

2012 GOP convention live, thread #3

Republican National Convention: The race to the bottomWatch live video here and join the conversation as we live blog the 2012 GOP convention.5:34 PM PT:This idea that pooled taxpayer money has literally never done anything, ever, is pretty great.

? @daveweigel via TweetDeck

5:36 PM PT: My favorite thing about this video of Mitt Romney lying about the "build that" quote is awesome if for now other reason than the effite, un-American way in which he pronounces "entrepreneur."

5:37 PM PT: I never knew that Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin's last name rhymed with "failin'" and "Palin." I always that it was like "fallin'" or "Pallin'" around with terrorists.

5:39 PM PT:Obama-Biden beat Boehner-Kasich in their golf match. "Biden was cool under pressure, sinking a 15- to 20-foot putt." http://t.co/...

Just sayin'...

5:40 PM PT:

The guy just featured in the "I build it" RNC informercial received several million dollars in government contracts. http://t.co/...

? @BuzzFeedAndrew via TweetDeck

5:46 PM PT: You'll notice they never actually show video of President Obama with these "build that" quotes. That's because if they showed the video you'd see that it was edited and didn't flow together. But as wildly dishonest as this is, Romney still is not winning.

5:46 PM PT: Governor Bob McDonnell Ultrasound (R-VA) has just taken the stage.

The Demographics of Americas Governors: Religion

Sometimes governors, especially Republicans, talk about how much religion has guided them in the lives while never actually revealing their denomination. It takes a bit of searching to confirm that they?re actually Protestant. John Kasich and Rick Scott[...]
