2012 GOP convention live, thread #6

Republican National Convention: The race to the bottomWatch live video here and join the conversation as we live blog the 2012 GOP convention.

6:42 PM PT: Texas GOP Senate candidate Ted Cruz is speaking now, but the big star of the evening will be Chris Christie, scheduled to speak in about an hour. Apparently his speech is heavy on himself and light on Mitt.

These Chris Christie remarks are amazing.  All about himself. Doesn't even squeeze Mitt in until the very end and says his name only 7 times

2012 GOP convention live, thread #5: Rick
Santorum attacks blah people

Republican National Convention: The race to the bottomWatch live video here and join the conversation as we live blog the 2012 GOP convention.

6:21 PM PT: Rick Santorum is on the stage. His speech, which is just starting, will focus on the Romney campaign's welfare lie. In other words, he'll be attacking blah people.

6:22 PM PT: Santorum talking about his father mining coal until he was 72 years old. Which is exactly what coal miners will have to do if Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney get their way with Medicare and Social Security.

6:25 PM PT: Santorum talking about how Obama made economy worse. Well, it's fair to say you'd want to see faster growth, but Obama has made the economy better?especially after his first year. More than four million jobs have been created since his first year in office. There's more to do, but even so, President Obama already has a better private sector jobs record in less than four years than George W. Bush had in eight.

6:32 PM PT: Santorum rails against Obama for allegedly waiving the work requirement in welfare reform. That's bullshit. Obama has not issued any waivers?he's merely invited applications for pilot projects to see experiment with ways to shift more welfare recipients into the workforce. Three weeks ago, Santorum would only say that Obama's welfare policy would "potentially" gut welfare reform. Now he says it already has. He's lying to satisfy Romney?and it's an attack on "blah" people.

6:33 PM PT: Rick Santorum now saying how great it would be to ban abortion because he chose to have a beautiful daughter.

6:33 PM PT: I wonder how Santorum feels about Mitt Romney saying that the legality of abortion is a "settled" issue and shouldn't be brought up during the campaign.

6:35 PM PT: The name "Romney" appeared three times in Rick Santorum's speech. #NBCPolitics

6:42 PM PT (Kaili Joy Gray): New thread here.

You Built That... Only to have Mitt Romney take
it away

After repeatedly touting his business experience as an asset towards reviving the U.S. economy, Mitt Romney has been put on the defensive by Bain Capital workers who are fighting back against the outsourcing of their jobs. One hundred seventy workers at a Sensata Technologies plant in Freeport, Illinois ? of which Bain is the majority owner ? are calling on Romney to help save their jobs from being shipped to China. The factory manufactures sensors and controls that are used in aircraft and automobiles, but has been dismantling and shipping the plant to China piece by piece ? even as it requires the workers to train personally their Chinese replacements, who have been flown in by management.
