White pride group urges Tea Party to be honest
about its racism

Remember the Council of Conservative Citizens? They were Trent Lott's buddies back in the day, and are a modern-era, suit-and-tie version of the KKK ("CCC" ... get it?). The Anti-Defamation League has more info on those racists here.

In any case, those guys aren't happy that the Tea Party has run away from the racist label after the recent NAACP dustup.

This was a great opportunity for the Tea Party movement to show some backbone by laughing in the face of the imbeciles at the NAACP. But did they? Of course not. Predictably, they responded in the same tired, pusillanimous manner with which they always respond to these never ending accusations. Instead of replying with a loud BWAHAHAHA! or a “Yeah? What’s your point?” or “So what?” or “Of course we’re racists -we’re white people.

That’s what “racist” means or “Can any of you race hustlers even spell “racist”?”, they predictably went into their usual bend over and grab their ankles mode. They protested that oh no, we’re not racists at all, we don’t tolerate racists at our rallies which are really huge rainbow coalitions, and it’s the NAACP and the liberals who are the real racists, etc., etc. You know, the lame “Bull Connor was a Democrat!” defense. It never works, but they just keep trotting it out like some lucky charm in the vain hope that this time it will work.

Racist means white person. Period. Until the Tea Partiers get that through their heads, nothing’s going to change, and they’re never going to be an effective political force.

All they're asking for is some honesty! Here is Dale Robertson, founder of the Tea Party:

It's easy to see why those modern KKK clones are frustrated.

How Repug Racism Could Backfire - on Democrats

One of the many self-destructive electoral mistakes Democratic candidates make is thinking every anti-republican vote is an automatic pro-Democratic vote.  I have been bitching for years about the refusal of Democratic campaigns to even acknowledge the existence - much less try to get out the vote - of Democrats not inspired enough to get off their asses to vote.

This pretense that non-voting Democrats don't exist is particularly virulent and inexcusable when it comes to minorities. I wish I had a nickel for every time I've heard some variation of "it doesn't matter if we piss off the blacks - what are they going to do, vote republican?"

They're going to stay home, you fucking moron.

Now Democratic campaigns are repeating the same mistake with the Democratic Party's Hope for the Future: Hispanics.

Talking Points Memo:

A TPM reader from out West weighs in on one particular wrinkle to the Tancredo campaign: its potential indirect effects on Latinos:

I'm glad someone is analyzing the Tancredo campaign more deeply than just the superficial thought that Tancredo's entry into the race is good for the Dems either because TT will split the Republican vote and/or his presence in the race will mobilize Hispanic voters. In a state with a Latino population of 20% or more (as you point out) the dynamics of a Tancredo bid are actually quite toxic for Latinos in particular.

When someone like Tancredo is campaigning, Colorado Democrats literally believe that they don't need to do anything to court Hispanic voters other than to point to examples of the Crazy from Tancredo and his ilk. I have received e-mails from Dems that are nothing more than a forwarded crazy e-mail from some right winger, with a comment something like "I don't normally just forward e-mails from Republicans, but this one speaks for itself." When the race-baiting right is in full throat, Democrats feel free to move to the right on race issues involving Latinos, simply because they feel comfortable that the only argument they need to make to Latino voters is that the alternative is worse.

SNIP

The long-term political dynamic is that as the Democrats feel more and more free to move to the right on immigration to chase what they perceive as "centrist" voters, the growing Latino population feels more and more that neither party represents us. So, voter participation drops, and then the same lack of voter participation is cited by the Dems as a reason not to take a harder line against Latino race-baiting. Obama's 2010 campaign created a big jump in Latino voter participation in Colorado - up to 13% from what had been single digits - so far with no perceptible change in the Colorado Dem calculation that Tancredo-style craziness from the right actually gives Democrats an opportunity to tack even further right on Latino-identified issues like immigration and bilingual ed while offering nothing to Latinos other than the forwarded message that the other side are even bigger haters. So you are right to say the Tancredo campaign is unhealthy for the long-term health of political discourse in Colorado, and I thank you for it.

CA-Sen: Boxer pulls into clear lead over Fiorina

Public Policy Polling (PDF). July 23-25. Registered voters. MoE 3.95%

The candidates for U.S. Senate are Republican Carly Fiorina and Democrat Barbara Boxer. If the election was today, who would you vote for?

Barbara Boxer (D) 49
Carly Fiorina (R) 40
Undecided 11

This may well prove to be another in an ever-expanding series of races where voters are not sold on the Democratic incumbent, but grudgingly stick with them because the Republican nominee fails to be seen as a legitimate alternative. While Senator Boxer's job approval numbers are middling at best (44-46), they are light years ahead of GOP nominee Carly Fiorina. The Republican millionaire businesswoman heads into the heat of the general election campaign with voters already holding a generally unfavorable opinion of the candidate: Fiorina has just 28 percent favorability, with 40 percent already holding an unfavorable view of her.

President Obama also maintains decent approval ratings in the Golden State (54 percent), which means that Fiorina might not be able to connect with the anti-Obama appeals being used by so many Republican candidates from coast to coast.

Boxer can also take solace in the fact that the ideological breakdowns of this poll seem to favor her continued command of this race. Boxer's huge lead among liberals (81-10) is pretty predictable, but the punditocracy should also note that Boxer is cleaning Fiorina's clock among moderate voters (57-30). Sure, Fiorina is destroying Boxer among conservatives (75-15), but this is California--there aren't enough conservatives for her to make up the gap.

There are also signs in this poll that, at least in California, the "enthusiasm gap" might well be narrowing. The sample polled by PPP was not far off of the 2008 electorate, both in terms of the presidential vote and the partisan ID breakdown. Obama carried the state by 25 points in 2008, and this polling sample favored the President over McCain by a 22-point margin. This implies a more Republican electorate, but only incrementally so.

Eyes will now turn, later in the week, to PPP's numbers in the gubernatorial race. While Fiorina has filled her own coffers in order to forge a viable campaign, she has paled in comparison to the record-setting avalanche of self-funding from GOP gubernatorial nominee Meg Whitman. It will be intriguing to see where PPP puts the battle between Whitman and Democratic nominee Jerry Brown.

Still digging: Conservatives won't let up barrage
of attacks on Shirley Sherrod

Even after Andrew Breitbart's video of Shirley Sherrod's NAACP speech was uncovered as a deceptively edited excerpt that distorted her comments, conservatives have continued to attack Sherrod with a barrage of false or ludicrous smears.

Right-wing media ran withBreitbart's video to declare Sherrod "racist"

Breitbart posts Sherrod video, calls her "racist,"claims "Context is everything." On July 19, Breitbart posted  heavilyedited video of Sherrod and falsely suggested that Sherrod discriminatedagainst a white farmer in her capacity as the Agriculture Department's GeorgiaDirector of Rural Development. Breitbart said that the video provides "videoevidence of racism coming from" Sherrod.

Right-wing mediatrumpet video, declare Sherrod a racist. Right-wing media subsequently promoted Breitbart'svideo, showering him with praise andagreeing that it proved Sherrod is a racist.

NAACP releases full tape vindicating Sherrod. The NAACP released the full video ofSherrod's comments on the evening of July 20. In the video, Sherrod states that"working with him [the white farmer] made me see that it's really aboutthose who have versus those who don't." She went on to state that"they could be black, and they could be white, they could be Hispanic. Andit made me realize then that I needed to work to help poor people -- those whodon't have access the way others have."

Even after Breitbart'sclaims are debunked, right-wing media declare Sherrod a "racist," "race-baiter"

Even afterBreitbart's story dissolved, certain right-wing media figures absurdly continued to accuseSherrod of racism.

Limbaugh: "Andrew Breitbart was exactly right. ... If youlisten to the whole speech ... she's racist." On the July 22 edition ofhis radio show, Rush Limbaugh claimed,"AndrewBreitbart was exactly right. This woman did not have an epiphany when she wasat the USDA. When she was speaking to the NAACP, she did not have an epiphany.... If you listen to the whole speech, as people have, 43 minutes, she'sracist. The NAACP is racist."

Levin: Sherrod is a"race-baiter." On July 23, MarkLevin called Sherroda "race-baiter," "an idiot" and claimed, "Breitbart was right about her."

Hannity: Sherrod"still admits" "discriminating against this white farmer." On the July 20 edition of Fox News' Hannity, SeanHannity said thatSherrod "still admits that she was discriminating against this white farmer"even though the full context of Sherrod's comments were available at the timeof his program.

Hoft: "Obama called radical Shirley Sherrod today to ...apologize for firing her for her racist remarks." In a July 22 Gateway Pundit post,Hoft wrote, "Barack Obama called radical Shirley Sherrod today to ...apologize for firing her for her racist remarks at an NAACP event inMarch." Hoft posted part of a WallStreet Journal article about the phone call and again claimed,"Far left anti-white radical Shirley Sherrod is linked to terrorist BillAyers like Barack Obama."

Andy McCarthy: "Ms. Sherrod's Speech Was Most Certainly NotAbout Transcending Racism." In a July 22 National Review Online post,Andy McCarthy wrote: "I don't understand the sudden pendulum swing in theother direction. Now, in Take Two, we are to understand that Ms. Sherrodwas not exhibiting racism. Instead, 'taken in context,' we're told, she isactually a heroic figure who has transcended the racist views that, given the terrible things she saw growing up in the South, wereunderstandable." McCarthy posted parts of her speech and wrote:"Pardon me, but I think I'll stay off the Canonize Shirley bandwagon. Tome, it seems like she's still got plenty of racial baggage. What we're seeingis not transcendence but transference. That's why the NAACP crowd reacted soenthusiastically throughout her speech."

Conservatives claim Sherrodis a "Marxist," favors "redistribution," and is a "radical"

Breitbart: Sherrodhas "Marxist way of looking at the world".  On the July 26 edition of The Savage Nation, AndrewBreitbart said thatwhen viewing "the entirety of the tape" "you will see a person who has a veryMarxist way of looking at the world."

Beck: Sherrod "obviously has some sort of Marxist orredistributionist qualities to her." Onthe July 21 edition of his radio show, Beck stated that Sherrod"obviously has some sort of Marxist or redistribution qualities toher." He further said that Sherrod is "class warfare just not racewarfare." On his Fox News show, Beck said Sherrod should havebeen made a "czar" because "she fits in" with the"Maoists" in the Obama administration.

Limbaugh: Sherrodsupports "the need for redistribution." Onthe July 21 edition of his show, Rush Limbaugh claimed that Sherrodwas a supporter of "Obamunism" and favors "the haves versus the have-nots andthe need for redistribution."

Crowley: Sherrodmay be among "radicals, racists, socialists" "stocked" in Obama administration. Fox News' Monica Crowley said Sherrod may beamong the "radicals, racists, socialists" that are "stocked" in the Obamaadministration. Crowley asked, "How many Van Joneses are in thisadministration? How many Shirley Sherrods?"

Hoft: Sherrod is"communist, radical, socialist, terror-sympathizer." Hoft called Sherrod"a communist, radical, socialist, terror-sympathizer" and "white farmer-hater."

Mattera: "The broadis a Marxist." Human Events editor JasonMattera posted onhis Twitter account: "Sherrod shouldn't be given her job back. The broad is aMarxist. I have no sympathy for her."

Derbyshire: Sherrodis "a revolutionary radical." Onhis "Radio Derb" podcast,National Review's John Derbyshire called Sherrod"a revolutionary radical."

American Spectator's Lord claimed Sherrod's story about relative's lynching was"false"

Spectator's Lord:Sherrod lynching story "did not happen" and "not true." Jeffrey Lord, writing in the AmericanSpectator on July 26, claimed thatSherrod's story in her NAACP speech about how her relative Bobby Hall had beenlynched was "not true. It did not happen." Lord's explanation was that becauseHull was beaten to death by three law enforcement officials, rather thanhanged, he had not been lynched. Lord went on to ask, "Did Ms. Sherroddeliberately concoct this story in search of a piece of that ugly romance toadd 'glamour' to a family story that is gut-wrenchingly horrendous already?" Headds that "nine Justices of the United States Supreme Court" -- in the ruling they issued following the trial of Hall'skillers in the 1940s -- "says not one word about Bobby Hall being lynched."

Experts on historyof lynching rebut Lord's Sherrod claim. In interviewswith Media Matters, several experts on the history oflynching criticized Lord'sarticle. Christopher Waldrep, a professor of history at San Francisco StateUniversity, said "I don't know how in the world you can say" Hall's deathis "not a lynching," adding that "People at the time had noquestion that it was a lynching. I mean, there was no particular debate." Michael Pfeifer, a professor at John Jay College ofCriminal Justice likewise concludedthat "Jeffrey Lord's reasoning is fallacious" and "profoundlyahistorical." Pfeifer added that while the word "lynching""has always eluded simple, consensus definitions," its use "wasmost often, but never exclusively, hanging (shootings, beatings, burnings, etc.were also called 'lynchings.')"

Lord's Spectator colleaguescriticize his article. On July26, John Toobin wrote, "What on Earth is Jeffrey Lord talkingabout on the mainpage? ... Lynching is defined as an extrajudicialkilling by a mob (which can be as few as two people). The fatal beating ofBobby Hall most certainly qualifies." Philip Klein wrote, " I am renderedspeechless by a 4,000-word article that is based around the suggestion thatsomebody is a liar for saying that a black man was lynched, when he was merelybeaten to death by a white sheriff who evidence suggests had previouslythreatened to 'get him.'"

Lord stands by hisclaims. In a July 27 blogpost, Lord stood by his article, writing:

RandomHouse Webster's College Dictionary defines lynching as: "to put to death, esp. hanging by mob action and without legal authority."

Ihave read the Court's decision. Three people are not a "mob." A mobis defined as a "large crowd." So there was no "mob action"because there was no mob. Second, the Supreme Court specifically said theSheriff and his deputy and a local policeman acted "under color oflaw." Which means they had legal authority.

Soto say that Bobby Hall was lynched is, factually, according to the SupremeCourt and, if you prefer, Webster's, not true. No mob. Therefore no"mob action." And the three had "legal authority."

Yet another Spectator colleaguecriticizes his follow-up. In aJuly 27 post, W. James Antle called Lord's follow-up "wildly unpersuasive, toput it mildly," noting that Lord's definition of lynching would exclude thekillings of Emmett Till and James Byrd, and that "Both of these high-profile,racially motivated, 20th-century murders are widely and popularly described aslynchings."

Right-wing media attackSherrod's role in discrimination suit against USDA

Blumer, Shapiro,Breitbart use Sherrod's role in discrimination suit to attack her. Conservative media outlets have attacked Sherrod'sparticipation in a lawsuit charging the U.S. Department of Agriculture withdiscrimination against African American farmers.  Tom Blumer claimedthat the class-action lawsuit "has a checkered history" and that Sherrod'sparticipation in the case "deserve[s] further scrutiny, Ben Shapiro said thatUSDA "had been shaken down by Sherrod," and Andrew Breitbart suggested thatSherrod had been fired to prevent people from "looking into" the lawsuit.

CongressionalRepublicans supported black farmers' allegations of discrimination byUSDA. Sen. Charles Grassley(R-IA) has sponsored or co-sponsored anumber of bills seeking to allow more African American farmers to join thesettlement of discrimination claims by USDA, and said of the settlement,"I'm not going to give up until we get a good ending for it." Former Rep. Steve Chabot (R-OH) has also sponsored or co-sponsored billsto allow more African American farmers to participate in the settlement. In 2004, as chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution,Chabot held an oversight hearing on the "Status of the Implementation ofthe Pigford v. Glickman Settlement." In his opening statement, Chabot notedthat "in an ironic twist, the process that was created to provide a forumfor those whose claims had been shut out has itself shut out nearly two-thirdsof all who wanted to have their discrimination claims heard."

Federal judge, independent study found gross racial disparities in USDA programs. In 1999, federal district Judge Paul Friedman wrote an opinionapproving the settlement in the original Pigford v. Glickman settlement. In that opinion,Friedman recounted thehistory of discrimination against African American farmers by the USDA. The Congressional Research Service reported thata USDA-commissioned study found that "found that from 1990 to 1995,minority participation in FSA programs was very low and minorities received lessthan their fair share of USDA money for crop payments, disaster payments, andloans."

Conservative blogs attemptto smear Sherrod by attacking SNCC

Hoft,Illinois Review attempt to connect Sherrod to William Ayers through SNCC. In a post promoted byGateway Pundit's Jim Hoft, conservative blog Illinois Review attempted toconnect Sherrod to William Ayers, writing, "Ms. Sherrod's husband is a formerhoncho in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee back in the 1960's. Youcan read more about it in Bill Ayers book 'Fugitive Days.' Yes, that Bill Ayers. He was involved in SNCC as well."

Sweetness &Light: Charles Sherrod was "one of the founders" of SNCC, which "evolved from anon-violent group to a pro-violent group." Theblog Sweetness & Light claimed,"Charles Sherrod was one of the founders of the Student NonviolentCoordinating Committee. The SNCC quickly evolved from a non-violent group to apro-violent group under Stokely Carmichael and H. Rapp Brown."

Sites ignore SNCC'srole in the civil rights movement. None of the sites notes SNCC's role in the lunch countersit-ins and "freedom rides" in the South they organized and participated in as part of thecivil rights movement.

Wellstone Action: Can recycling our work save the
progressive movement

As progressives, we love to recycle.  But when it comes to creating change, we tend to remake our plans every two years, in the process wastefully throwing away all the infrastructure, leadership, and power we?ve built along the way.

In 2009, we tossed out that old paradigm.  That?s why I?m excited to show you Wellstone Action?s 2009 Annual Report.  Building off of an historic election, unprecedented rates of voter participation, and partisan majorities in Congress, our movement set about pivoting that momentum into a plan for lasting power for social change.

View our 2009 Annual Report now!
The report shows how you and thousands of Wellstone Action members like you have helped to build a stronger and more effective progressive movement.  Last year, Wellstone Action worked with over 130 partner organizations to train more than 9,000 activists in 43 states.

Now we are bracing for one of the most critical midterm elections in modern history, we?re working to close the ?training gap? with the right wing??which outspends the progressive movement on training by a whopping 4-1 margin?and counter the rising influence of the Tea Party.

The progressive movement?s future depends on strengthening our activist network to implement effective public policy, mobilize voters, elect truly representative leaders, and empower communities to organize for change. And your commitment as a Wellstone Action member is essential to our success.

Let's get to work!

Sincerely,
Jeff Blodgett and the team at Wellstone Action

Unemployment insurance extension approved, but
more action needed to create jobs

Efforts to provide more assistance to millions of unemployed workers cleared a major hurdle last week when President Obama signed into law a measure to preserve extended unemployment insurance benefits for the long-term unemployed. At a time when close to half of all unemployed workers have been looking for a job for more than six months, and about a quarter have been jobless for more than a year, the extension provides critical safety net protection. But there is still a massive jobs hole that will require additional policy action to fill.

At this pace, full employment won't return for years
EPI President Lawrence Mishel took this message to the House Committee on Financial Services where he testified on July 22 that "The jobs crisis is severe and there is no end in sight." Mishel addressed Congress one day after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke warned that unemployment rates would remain elevated for several years. Mishel supplied several additional sobering forecasts: The unemployment rate will likely rise above its current rate of 9.5% before the end of the year, and the Congressional Budget Office expects it to average 9.5% in 2011 - four years after the start of the recession.

"Some policy makers may be getting tired of having to deal with job creation and unemployment," Mishel said. "But it is surely true that American families are even more tired of having to endure extreme labor market distress with no real end in sight." EPI says the government needs to support job creation by providing relief to cash-strapped state governments and to invest in infrastructure, such as school and transportation network modernization.

The reason that a more robust jobs creation effort is required, Mishel said, is that the current pace of job creation is not nearly strong enough to create the 10.6 million jobs needed to return to pre-recession levels of unemployment: Even if the country could achieve the strongest rate of job growth seen during the late 1990s (2.6% in 1998) and sustain that indefinitely, it would still take until 2015 to return to pre-recession unemployment rates of 5%.

In his testimony, Mishel also outlined a number of factors that could make a bad situation worse, chief among them, a premature focus on deficit reduction. "Creating more jobs in the short run will necessarily mean having higher deficits in the next few years," he said. "One should not invoke worries about future deficits as a reason to avoid creating jobs now. In fact, these are complementary strategies, creating jobs and more taxpayers now is the way to move the fiscal situation to a healthier place."

On July 20, new state unemployment data confirmed that while jobs are starting to return, the pace of recovery remains slow. Sixteen states, along with Washington, D.C., have double-digit unemployment rates. The official unemployment rate in June was 14.2% in Nevada, 13.2% in Michigan, and 12.3% in California. For a full list of unemployment rates by state, as well as by gender, race, and education level, visit EPI's Economy Track.

Creating jobs will reduce the deficit
At a time when so much discussion of fiscal policy is focused on deficit reduction, Economist Josh Bivens published an Economic Snapshot showing that lost jobs have been the main factor contributing to the increased federal deficit in recent years and that an improved economy that supports more jobs will be key to deficit reduction. Bivens showed that the growth in the federal deficit since the start of the recession could be attributed to three main sources, with recession-related spending and revenue losses  being the biggest source by far, contributing more than three-quarters of the growth in the deficit since 2007. Bivens also stressed that "explicitly temporary policy responses to the recession, such as the Recovery Act, have added to the deficit in recent years but will be withdrawn when the economy recovers."
