Well, they're sure to raise eyebrows if not ire in some quarters of the GOP. In comments to the Columbus Dispatch, retiring GOP Senator George Voinovich blames the southern contingent for the GOP's demise. "We got too many Jim DeMints (R-S.C.) and Tom[...]

Add to myYahoo! From yesterday's edition of the never-ending Sarah Palin farewell tour:
We are facing tough challenges in America, with some seeming to just be hell-bent maybe on tearing down our nation, perpetuating some pessimism, and suggesting American apologetics, suggesting perhaps that our best days were yesterdays.
Presumably those hell-bent destroyers are defined as anyone who disagrees with Palin. But as long as the media is going to give Palin unfettered access to the national microphone, maybe they could ask her to name names.

Add to myYahoo!Dr. Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson’s doctor gave him the drug Propofol or Diprivan that killed him!CNN is confirming this right now. WOW!!! I wonder what the toxicology report is going to detail? Will it say that Diprivan was the cause of death? If it does, this doctor well he wouldn’t be smiling like that anymore. However, it’s stared [...]

Add to myYahoo!Didn't you think racism was dead after we elected an African American president? Obama being depicted as a witch doctor was just done in good--clean---American---fun.
Star-Telegram:
GRAND PRAIRIE ? Four Grand Prairie police officers and a dispatcher are on paid administrative leave after a racist e-mail about President Barack Obama was circulated, and the local NAACP chapter is asking whether a recent round of diversity training was for naught.
The e-mail came from outside the department, but the officers opened and/or forwarded it, said Detective John Brimmer, a Grand Prairie police spokesman.
The department was "forced to go through diversity training two years ago, and this is what we get," Preston Dixon, vice president of the Grand Prairie chapter of the NAACP, said at a news conference Wednesday.
"Since they?ve gone through diversity training, then they knew better and should be fired," he said. Dixon?s wife, a Police Department employee, has filed an unrelated discrimination suit against the department.
Police did not release the e-mail. "These are some good officers who have worked at the department for a long time that made a serious lapse in judgment," Brimmer said. "You can?t do much about an unsolicited e-mail, but what you do after you open it is on you."
The officers appear to have violated a department policy that forbids employees from using city-owned computers for personal business, Brimmer said.
They should release the email so we know what was being passed around. The fact that these bozos were suspended means that it had to be pretty horrible.

Add to myYahoo!Almost to a man, Republicans refuse to say that Barack Obama was born in the United States:
Apparently they're too cowardly to repudiate the racist extremists within their party. Pitiful.
But Rep.Neil Abercrombie (D-HI) plans to force them to face their demons:
Okay, this is getting really good. Dem Rep. Neil Abercrombie of Hawaii is going to introduce a resolution on the House floor today that seems designed to put House GOPers who are flirting with birtherism in a jam.
The measure Abercrombie will introduce commemorates the 50th anniversary of Hawaii’s statehood. But here’s the rub, his spokesman tells me: It describes Hawaii as Barack Obama’s birthplace.
“In the language of the resolution, there is a statement that Hawaii is the birthplace of the 44th President of the United States,” Abercrombie spokesman Dave Helfert confirms.
Perfect.
For more discussion, see turneresq's diary.
Update: Lunatic Michele Bachmann (R-MN) has blocked the resolution (h/t to shades at midnite).

Add to myYahoo! This afternoon, Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) took to the Senate floor and basically made a pitch for the oil and gas industry. He said that to ensure “energy security,” the United States should increasingly “extract our own resources.” According to Inhofe, this solution would not only achieve energy independence, but it would also be pollution-free:
People complain that we are buying — importing from the Middle East — oil and gas. And then they find out that we have it all right here. We don’t have to do that. If their argument there is “Well, we don’t want to use oil and gas because we think it pollutes” — which it doesn’t — but if that’s their argument, then why are we willing to import it from Saudi Arabia and other countries in the Middle East?
Watch it:
Inhofe is an anti-science senator who thinks that global warming is “the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people.” Not only does oil and gas drilling release greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change, but they also release other dangerous pollutants that endanger American health. As the Natural Resources Defense Council wrote in a 2008 report:
Oil and gas drilling operations can release a number of hazardous pollutants, including hydrogen sulfide, benzene, toluene, formaldehyde, and diesel exhaust. Exposure is known to lead to short-term illnesses, cancer, or even death. For example, benzene and formaldehyde are both known to cause cancer, and diesel exhaust contains a number of compounds known to cause cancer. Emissions can come from oil and gas itself, chemical additives used in drilling, or fuel combustion.
Additionally, a 2003 University of California at Irvine study found that “oil and natural gas wells and refineries create regional air pollution levels in excess of some of the nation’s smoggiest urban areas.” In states like Wyoming and New Mexico, “oil and gas drilling operations are the second largest source of statewide carbon dioxide and methane emissions,” two key greenhouse gases.
Of course there are also oil spills; big oil spills put approximately 37 million gallons of oil into the world’s oceans each year. Several hundred million more gallons wind up in the waterways through other means, such as air pollution.
More drilling is Inhofe’s solution to all the nation’s economic problems. He even thought it would help low-income families pay their heating bills. Of course, actual solutions to achieving energy independence and creating jobs are ones that Inhofe is unwilling to even consider because they won’t benefit his friends in the gas and oil industry.

"Disgusting things you'd never anticipate"
We've asked it before-- and in the words of the B-52's-- who's to blame? Who's to blame for the downfall of the Republican Party? One might be tempted to say "the death" of the Republican Party, but history tells us that the Republicans will come back and that we'll look forward to that day as the Democrats descend into the dark bowels of the complete corruption that already dominates almost as much of it as has dominated the GOP for so long.
But respected Ohio senior Senator George Voinovich thinks he knows what has caused the temporary demise-- what and who-- at least for his own state of Ohio. He told the Columbus Dispatch ?We got too many Jim DeMints (R-SC) and Tom Coburns (R-OK). It?s the southerners. They get on TV and go 'errrr, errrrr.' People hear them and say, ?These people, they?re southerners. The party?s being taken over by southerners. What they hell they got to do with Ohio?'"
Can the same be said for GOP trouble around the country? In yesterday's NY Times, John Harwood contrasts the dwindling number of Republican moderates interested in goverance to the neo-Confederate fanatics interested in... wrecking government and preventing President Obama from having a successful presidency. Harwood askes us to behold "the slight, dour spokesman for orthodox Republicanism. Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, leader of the shrunken Republican minority, will never be mistaken for a bodybuilder or a movie star"... or a moderate.
In his Southern-accented monotone, the Alabama native urges colleagues on Capitol Hill to block President Obama?s agenda and lower their sights toward incremental changes in health and energy policy. While Mr. Schwarzenegger exhorts the White House to ?never give up,? Mr. McConnell criticizes the president?s push to ?raise taxes in the middle of a recession? to cover those without insurance.
Six months after President George W. Bush left the stage, neither brand of Republicanism fares especially well with the public. But there is no doubt which holds more midsummer box-office appeal among the party faithful-- and it is not the Terminator?s.
