Since When Do TERRORISTS get to GIVE PRESS
INTERVIEWS

medusa

My head just exploded.

Really.

I've had a migraine all day, thunderstorms are threatening, and now, I find out that the Kansas City Star thought it would be a good idea to interview the terrorist who killed Dr. Tiller.

Funny, that. How come we never interview other terrorists? We keep them locked away in chains and hoods and in places so dark and frightening that they'll never be heard from again, but the piece of shit who killed a compassionate man is allowed to spew his crap all over the place.

WHY?

Oh, and for those people who told me that I wasn't allowed to call Randall Terry, former used car salesman and founder of Operation Rescue, a terrorist because he never inspired anyone to kill anyone, well, you can read this: Operation
Rescue
is desperately trying to get its story straight. They SWEAR they had nothing to do with the killing of anyone, but it sure is interesting how their phone numbers and whatnot show up on these terrorists' persons when they're arrested. Jus' saying.

Anyway, according to the terrorist who murdered Dr. Tiller IN CHURCH,

The Kansas City man charged with killing Wichita abortion doctor George Tiller said in an interview he was angry at a major anti-abortion group that he thought had abandoned him.

Scott Roeder also said from jail that he was elated that Tiller was dead and that he knew he could be going to prison for decades.

He talked about his whereabouts on the day of his arrest, including plans he had made to pick up goat milk and cheese at a farm west of Kansas City.

The Kansas City Star
interviewed Roeder three times in recent weeks, including once at the Sedgwick County Jail.

In a phone interview Friday, Roeder said he was upset at the president of Operation Rescue, Troy Newman, who had condemned the killing and said his organization had nothing to do with Roeder.

Again, WHY is this man being allowed to be interviewed by the press? Have we collectively lost our minds? Shouldn't he be in a cell somewhere, alone, thinking about the fact that he, who claims to be a good Christian, shot a man in cold blood in a church?

Instead, we get to read this bullshit:

?Tiller's death

Roeder said he felt "relief and joy" over the shooting.

"And I've heard that three women have actually changed their minds and had their babies because there's no availability here," he said. "Wichita has been abortion-free since that time.

"That's total elation."

Is it seemly to allow someone to dance on someone else's grave? Is he actually celebrating the fact that he terrorized three women into not getting abortions? Is this how we want the abortion debate to continue in this country? The Supreme Court keeps upholding the basic RIGHT TO PRIVACY and nutjobs kill doctors in response?

I actively try to practice compassion.

I actively try to love my enemies, as Dr. King and Mahatma Gandhi tell me to.

But I cannot love the man who killed Dr. Tiller.

What I want is for him to rot in jail for the rest of his natural days, and I want for us to never, ever hear a peep out of him. Allowing him to speak, when Dr. Tiller is dead, is an abomination.

A fucking abomination.

Gates-Gate.

I think Andrew Sullivan gets this spot on:

And Obama is right that cops like Crowley are good men in general (although I can't pass a judgment on someone I don't know). I also believe in being respectful and polite to policemen as a rule, and do not recall any moment in my life when I haven't been. But I do think it's necessary to remember that policemen are our servants, not our masters. We pay their salary - and they'd better treat us right. And I find the many comments that we should always show deference to the man with the gun and the badge and never publicly criticize cops to be alarmingly authoritarian in its implications.

If a cop gives you trouble in your own home after it is perfectly clear that no crime has taken place, you have every right to tell him to get the hell out of your house; and he has no right to hang around. You also have every right to give him your opinion of his police work or his haircut if you so wish.

It seems to me undeniable that Henry Louis Gates Jr. behaved badly and was very quick to imagine that he was being picked on because of his race, but behaving badly in your own home is not, in itself, a crime.

And this notion that people need to respect the badge of a police officer is simply a nonsense.

Crowley was there to ascertain whether or not a crime was taking place. Once he had been shown proof that Gates was not a burglar and that this was actually his own home, Crowley should have left the premises, especially as Gates was claiming that he was only there because of his race.

If police can start arresting us because they don't like our tone then we really are walking towards a police state.

And Andrew's strongest point is that we employ them. And we employ them to get bad guys, not to arrest us if they don't like our attitude.

Subject: EJ Dionne and The Stupidity of Senator's Thune's Gun Amendment

Hi BuzzFlash,

I hope everybody has read EJ Dionne's column about allowing guns in Congress. If not, here it is.

"Arm The Senate" http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/26/AR2009072602189.html

Why, if Congress wants to allow whack-a-doodle gun owners to pack heat and roam OUR streets, stores, movie theaters, restaurants, etc; should THEY still get protected in Congress by Security Guards and Metal Detectors?

Get rid of the Security Guards and Metal Detectors and let people that "work" there walk into Congress facing an audience that isn't carrying signs or wearing pink shirts but "packing heat".

Let the members of Congress, that voted YES to retain their NRA Votes, pack their own heat and let the gun wars inside of Congress begin.

Can't wait to see how fast those 58 Senators duck under their desks when a spectator starts shooting at them.

Think this would be the last time we see such a stupid amendment from any Senator, regarding guns?

Nah, just dreaming. Those NRA Senators are too dumb for that. They would have an amendment up for a vote, requiring every Senator to bring a bazooka to work.

Thank-you EJ Dionne, for showing the stupidity of the NRA Senate Members.

Bunning, Pissed At McConnell And Cornyn,
Announces His Retirement

Bunning's retirement likely to help Jack Conway
Bunning's angry-- angry enough to denounce NRSC Chair John Cornyn and Miss McConnell for systematically drying up his fundraising sources-- but not angry enough to follow through on his threat to resign and let Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear, a Democrat, appoint a replacement. Instead, Bunning, one of the Senate's most reactionary members-- right up there with Jim DeMint (R-SC), Johnny Isakson (R-GA), Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Richard Burr (R-NC), and Jeff Sessions (R-AL) the half dozen neo-Confederate obstructionist fanatics who have decided to sacrifice the safety, security and well-being of the U.S. in a racially-tinged jihad against President Obama-- just announed he won't run for re-election. The most recent Senate approval polling (June 24) shows that neither Bunning nor Miss McConnell has persuaded Kentucky voters they're doing good jobs. Bunning's latest approval rating is a deadly 41% and McConnell's is 47%.

McConnell, who considers Kentucky his feudal domain, had decided that the 78 year old Bunning is too crazy, unpopular, eratic, and senile to be re-elected. Instead he has decreed that he wants a Republican hack he can easily control, Trey Grayson, KY's Secretary of State (who McConnell is rumored to have a long standing crush on). Grayson is more popular than Bunning but is by no means guaranteed the nomination, let alone the Senate seat.

Ron Paul's son, Bowling Green eye surgeon Rand Paul, who has the same kind of whacky, devoted following as Papa Paul, says he plans to run as the non-Insider candidate. Paul is expected to announce at the annual Fancy Farm picnic on Aug. 1 in western Kentucky. There is also an off-chance that Tim Couch, former University of Kentucky football star, may run, probably feeling baseball has had enough time in the spotlight and that it's football's turn. He's marrie dto a former Playboy bunny, Heather Kozar.

Had Bunning resigned it is likely that Governor Beshear would have appointed declared Democratic candidate, Daniel Mongiardo, the extremely conservative Lt. Governor, best known for a lack of backbone and unwillingness to stand up to right-wingers, Senator. That would have gone along way towards guaranteeing him the Democratic nomination. Now he will be evenly matched with the state's moderate and much-admired Attorney General Jack Conway.

An April poll shows that moderate Conway would beat Grayson next year but that the reactionary Mongiardo would be edged by Grayson. Inside-the-Beltway hack Chris Cillizza was quick to show he can be as twisted and insidious as Head Villager David Broder, declaring within minutes of Bunning's retirement announcement that the move "drastically increases Republicans' chances of holding the seat next fall."

Bunning, who is being praised to high Heaven by the hypocritical McConnell and Cornyn, will still be in the Senate long enough to vote against health care for Kentucky's needy residents and, of course, against President Obama's nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court.

DeMint throws fit, demands censorship of DNC ad

Jim DeMint thinks this ad shouldn't be allowed on the air:

Why?

DeMint calls the ad "both false and misleading" because it says that he doesn't have a health care plan, when he has in fact advanced one.

DeMint's "plan" is to give uninsured Americans vouchers of $2,000 per year (or $5,000 per family) to buy health care insurance. How would he pay for this? By requiring all TARP loans be repayed within five years, and using the repayments to pay for the vouchers.

Problem is, once the TARP loans are repayed, DeMint has no plan to pay for the vouchers. So not only would his plan be woefully inadequate and do nothing to control costs, it wouldn't even last more than a few years.

As the DNC said, that's "no plan at all."

"We don't concede at all that he does have a plan," said DNC communications director Brad Woodhouse, saying Demint's plan would "do nothing to address the questions of access and cost. That's not really a plan in our view."

Amazingly, the cable operators sided with DeMint and refused to air the ad, leaving the DNC with no choice other than to slightly change the ad's wording so that it would comply with the demands of cable company censors. (Imagine what Sarah Palin would be saying about the First Amendment at this point.)

According to the DNC, the revised ad still makes the same essential point: that Jim DeMint is putting politics ahead of doing anything meaningful on health care.

In the end, not only did Jim DeMint help draw attention to the DNC's ad, but he also let us know something that we might not have otherwise figured out: he's a thin-skinned bully who thinks the best way of dealing with political criticism is to have it taken off the air.

Jim DeMint is the one who waded into the conversation with his "Waterloo" insanity. Now that it's backfiring on him, he can't take the heat.

Yoo pushes back in defense of torture and
Constitutional abrogation

Most people, in the face of scorn and ire the likes of that faced by disgraced torture-advocate John Yoo, have the decency to slink away and, if not rethink those notions that the vast majority of the country were horrified by.

Most people have a conscience and a decency that would prevent them from going down that path in the first place.  But then again, most people are not John Yoo...a fact for which we can be eternally grateful.

The former Justice Department official, whose memos blessed the waterboarding of terrorism suspects and wiretapping of American citizens, has come out fighting, even as negative assessments of his government service pile up.

Last month, a federal judge in California refused to dismiss a lawsuit that accuses Yoo of violating a detainee's constitutional rights. This month, the Justice Department's inspector general described Yoo's legal analysis of the Bush surveillance program as "insufficient" and sometimes inaccurate. Also expected in coming weeks is a department ethics report that sources have said could renounce Yoo's approval of harsh CIA interrogation practices and recommend that he and Jay S. Bybee, a former colleague, be referred to their state bar associations for discipline.

While former colleagues have avoided attention in the face of such scrutiny, Yoo has been traveling across the country to give speeches and counter critics who dispute his bold view of the president's authority. Now a law professor at the University of California at Berkeley, he engages in polite but firm exchanges with legal scholars over conclusions in their academic work. This month, he wrote an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal defending his actions and labeling critics' arguments as "absurd" and "foolhardy" responses to "the media-stoked politics of recrimination."

Yoo - who was so odious and venal as to run afoul of John Ashcroft - arguably the most illiberal AG in the history of the republic - for his obsequious habit of running to Cheney's office to conspire against the Constitution using 'national security' as a cover.   Ashcroft refused to recommend him for the top job at the OLC and Yoo picked up his frilly skirts and flounced off, back to Berkley where protests by students and faculty offended by his presence on the campus got him quietly sent down to LA to teach at a little unknown wingnut California "rule 18" law school.

Now, he and the Justice Department are at odds once more after attorneys for the Justice Department told a federal judge in San Francisco that "private counsel will be assuming representation of Mr. Yoo" in the case filed by onetime domestic terrorism suspect Jose Padilla, who was held without criminal charge in the Navy brig at Charleston, SC for more than five years. U.S. District Judge Jeffrey S. White granted Padilla and his mother the right to pursue the case, which argued that Yoo had violated Padilla's civil rights when he authorized the government's terrorist-detention policies.

With a single sentence, the judge perfectly crystallized the debate about Yoo, describing it as a struggle to balance the anti-terrorism effort with "using tactics of terror" to win.

That sums it up perfectly, I think.
