Every time I look at the screen, I am reminded of the chaos that must have reigned in McCain's camp today that they let him go on in that test-pattern-inducing tie.
When McCain says "we" let spending get out of control, he obviously means his party and his party's president, despite his inexplicable transition to talking about Obama immediately after that "we."
Obama talks about influence of lobbyists -- a good theme to introduce given his opponent.
Paraphrase: "John talks about me being liberal -- mostly that's me opposing George Bush's wrongheaded policies."
McCain suggests spending freeze on everything but defense, veterans, and "several other vital issues." Because he of course supported veterans' bills like Webb's new GI Bill. Obama says need to make cuts with a scalpel, not a hatchet.
Mark it: 33 minutes in McCain goes to the threat of terrorism. That, my friends, is desperation.

Add to myYahoo!JSMIII's fauxksiness continues unabated. "Yer goin'" to do this and that.
The dimple in BHO's tie is askew. Wonder if that was a deliberate choice.
Lehrer continues to attempt to get the candidates to speak directly to each other. The candidates continue to ignore him.
McCain treading on dangerous ground by bringing up taxes and health care, given that he wants to tax most middle-class Americans' current health care . . . which BHO hammers! Nice.
JSMIII evades his taxing of middle-class health care, preferring to yammer on about pork. Yawn.
JSMIII lying. I'm sure you're shocked.
BHO points out that JSMIII is all about lavishing tax cuts on oil companies.
Q: Given the crisis, which of your priorities will you have to give up?
BHO: Hard to anticipate, but some things will undoubtedly have to be delayed. But energy independence isn't one. Proposes 10 year independence goal. Can't ignore health care -- too many Americans going broke because of health care. Finally, can't delay education improvements -- and need to make sure that all children can afford college. And really finally, infrastructure improvements can't wait. An all positive answer.
JSMIII: Immediately goes negative with BS "most liberal" tag for BHO. Talking about cost-plus contracts, which I'mm sure will resonate with Middle America. [ED: Obama talks health, education, and JSMIII . . . talks about federal contracting best practices. Points to Obama.]

Add to myYahoo!Well, my view from 60,000 feet so far is that Obama is winning on substance and getting clobbered on style. It's a total role reversal: McCain looks calm and comfortable, and is lying very smoothly, while Obama looks rattled and flustered, and there's[...]

Add to myYahoo!OK, here we go. Didn't it look like John McCain wanted to say "OK, stop touching me" as he and Barack embraced? Hmm, interesting time for my computer to freeze. OK, I'm back. Barack is doing well, he continues to appear the more presidential of the[...]

Add to myYahoo! We'll have three separate threads going tonight, mostly because it's the easiest way to handle technical issues. McCain is really defending corporate tax cuts in response to Obama's populist attack about how such cuts don't help the middle class?[...]

Add to myYahoo!John McCain has an old pen and uses it to argue he'll strike out earmarks. Ok.
Barack Obama injects some reality in the situation by stating that earmarks are only a fraction of the budget, and that McCain's tax cuts are far above that number.
----------
We're about 18 minutes in, and testy McCain begins to peek out. Obama is being relatively aggressive (compared to previous performances) and doesn't let McCain run with false numbers ("I don't know where he gets those figures")
----------
McCain tries to defend his tax cuts by claiming that Ireland business pay less taxes. He calls out Obama on his definition of "rich." But Obama explains that if you make less than $250,000, your taxes won't be raised by a dime.
Fabulous response to McCain's high business tax rate BS. Points out that the plethora of loopholes result in business paying some of the lowest tax rates.

Add to myYahoo! Here's what Candy Crowley blogged a while ago:
OXFORD, Mississippi (CNN) -- I think Jim Lehrer gave up trying to get them to talk to each other. It's even weirder in the hall -- they are no more than 8 feet apart from each other and they speak to Lehrer only. But A+ for the effort.
And CNN's own photo shows Obama looking at McCain while McCain stares straight ahead.
