As we are wont to do because we are a nerd, we have altered the structure of our little blog tonight. Now, the root URL of this little project is officially ‘ kiav.net ‘ . Other incarnations, such as ‘ ketchupisavegetable.com ‘ and ‘ ketchupisavegetable.net ‘ will simply redirect you here. Unfortunately, this may screw [...]

Add to myYahoo!WASHINGTON - A major expansion of government health insurance to nearly 4 million children passed the House of Representatives Tuesday, but without enough Republican support to overcome President Bush's promised veto.
The vote was 265-159, with 45 Republicans supporting the bill. It would take 289 votes to override the president's veto.
So the Republicans have decided to be the anti-children party, women not welcome (and Latinos, and people of color, and moderates, and centrists need not apply).
In the short term, this wasn't about money (the Iraq funding could cover that if Congress so chose) or compassion, or data, or history (SCHIP was a bipartisan Congressional bill) or public opinion. This was about ideology, and the need to back the President knowing that he was on the wrong side of the issue (that's what Republican moderates do).
The Senate will overwhelmingly pass this bipartisan bill. And the Republicans will pay for not overriding Bush's veto in 2008.
