Oh well, if that nice Mike Huckabee fella tells me I need to help Todd Akin stay in the race, why, I guess God wants me to do that!
TAMPA, Fla. ? Mike Huckabee rallied hundreds of Southern Baptists on a conference call Friday night in support of Todd Akin, offering advice about how they can help the embattled Missouri Senate candidate stay in the race ? while acknowledging Akin still may have to bow out.
?This could be a Mt. Carmel moment,? said the former Arkansas governor, referring to the Holy battle between Elijah and the prophets of Baal in the book of Kings. ?You know, you bring your gods. We?ll bring ours. We?ll see whose God answers the prayers and brings fire from heaven. That?s kind of where I?m praying: that there will be fire from heaven, and we?ll see it clearly, and everyone else will, too.?
?Obviously Todd?s numbers have dramatically gone down,? Huckabee added during an hour-long call, which started immediately after a defiant Akin reiterated during a news conference that he?s in the race to stay. ?Two things: the poll numbers need to come back up. Todd needs to show that he can still raise money. That?s a game changer. If not, then the pressure will continue. It maybe won?t be public, but the pressure will still be there for Todd to exit the race and clear the field for somebody else.?
Don't underestimate the homespun huckster. An awful lot of people listen to this stuff.

Add to myYahoo! The New Republic's Jonathon Cohn has an exhaustive guide to the Medicare debate playing out in this election. Or, nearly exhaustive, because of course neither Romney or Ryan has produced sufficient details to answer all of the questions Cohn poses.
But here are his key questions: 1) How do the plans control Medicare spending; 2) How quickly do the plans cut spending; 3) On whom do the plans place the most risk; and 4) What else would the plans (and the men behind them) do to the health care system? And here's a quick chart of Cohn's analysis.
More details are below the fold, but if you want the full analysis, Cohn's article is well worth the time.

Haley's spokesman Rob Godfrey told The Post and Courier of Charleston that the total compensation for Haley's staff went down 9% because job responsibilities shifted and one position hasn't been filled.
Godfrey will get an extra $7,000. Deputy Chief of Staff Ted Pitts will get a $12,000 raise, while budget manager Josh Baker and legislative liaison Katherine Veldran each received a $5,000 pay bump.
Christian Soura, who initially made $1 a year as the governor's special assistant, is now making $122,000 after taking over as deputy chief of staff.
Agencies can only carry forward 10% of unused money, so if Haley hadn't given the raises, the money would have returned to the general budget.

This is your moment of clarity #165: Todd Akin told us the other day that not all rape is legitimate. Luckily VP candidate Paul Ryan seems to agree with him - at least enough to cosponsor a bill in which they carefully change the wording from "rape" to "forcible rape." Why is rape such a confusing issue for the GOP?
Keep Fighting,
~Lee
