Wall Street Willie Wins Puerto Rico Easily

Willard Mitt Romney (aka Wall Street Willie) easily waltzed to victory in Puerto Rico, and claimed 22 of Puerto Rico's 23 delegates (one of the three super-delegates had previously come out supporting Newt Gingrich). Romney got all 20 of the delegates from yesterday's primary by winning over 50% of the primary vote (if he hadn't, all candidates getting 15% would have gotten some delegates).

Romney has done very well this year in Hawaii and the island territories, winning all of them fairly easily. It's just here in the continental U.S. that he is having problems. He probably would have won Puerto Rico anyway, but it didn't hurt that Santorum screwed himself during his trip there. Santorum didn't just shoot himself in the foot, he filled his feet with bullet holes by telling the residents of that island they would never become a state until they learned to speak English.

That was an incredibly stupid thing to do. It was the equivalent of telling a room full of women they don't deserve equal pay or the right to contraception, or telling a room full of African-Americans that slavery wasn't so bad. I would say it shows he's not qualified to be president, but I don't think any of the Republican candidates are qualified (including Romney). Here are the numbers for the Puerto Rico primary:

PUERTO RICO (77% reporting)
Mitt Romney...............91,963  (88.13%)
Rick Santorum...............8,801  (8.43%)
Newt Gingrich...............2,250  (2.16%)
Ron Paul...............1,339  (1.28%)
TOTAL VOTES...............104,353

Tomorrow the GOP nominating race moves on to Illinois, where there are 69 delegates at stake. The last polls available showed Wall Street Willie with a small lead over Mr. Frothy (Santorum). We'll know Tuesday night if that is true.

A Satire On The "War On Women"

It's no secret that the right-wing congressional Republicans (and the GOP presidential candidates) have virtually declared war on the women of America. Commenting on the latest Republican attack on women, their opposition to the Violence Against Women Act, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-California) says, "This is part of a larger effort, candidly, to cut back on rights and services to women. We've seen it go from discussions on Roe vs. Wade, to partial birth abortion, to contraception, to preventive services for women. This seems to be one more thing."

She is absolutely right. Republicans seem determined to cut both rights and services for American women. They have, in essence, declared war on women -- and seem determined to put and keep women in a second-class citizenship status. Here in Texas, Republican legislators have mandated that women seeking a legal abortion must be raped by a vaginal probe and humiliated before exercising their constitutional right (which if performed by an individual would result in a well-deserved and lengthy prison sentence).

My fellow Texas blogger, John C. over at Bay Area Houston (an excellent resource on Texas politics), has written a great post. It is a very funny tongue-in-cheek satire on the Texas vaginal rape law (and the general war on women). I am reposting it here for your benefit:

Governor calls for new prostate exam procedures."Every life lost to prostate disease is a tragedy we all must work together to prevent, and I commend Rep. Miller and Sen. Patrick for their hard work on this significant legislation,"
Friday March 16, 2012  ?  Austin, Texas  ?  Press ReleaseGov. Rick Perry ceremonially announce his support for new legislation crafted by Senator Dan Patrick and Representative Sid Miller which requires men to have a modified prostate procedure to ensure he is fully informed before making any impactful decisions.

The governor designated the measure an emergency item for the upcoming 2013 Legislative Session. He was joined by Sen. Dan Patrick and Rep. Sid Miller at the ceremony. "This important bill will ensure that every Texas man seeking or not seeking a prostate exam has all the facts about the procedure, and understands the devastating impact of such a life-changing decision."

The bill will require a series of hour long anal probes, performed by specialists with overly large digits, which will provide much needed information for men to determine what medical procedures would be necessary in the future. Under this legislation, a physician is required to display the results of the probe and explain the results in graphic detail.

"This bill will protect human life: the lives of men who may or may not want a prostate exam, as well as those who are faced with such a life changing decision," said Rep Sid Miller. "By providing men with a full 24-hour waiting period between these long, detailed, penetrating, pulsating, anal probes, this bill will provide men with adequate time to catch their breath and weight the impacts of their life-changing decision of taking a desk job without the use of Preparation H."

"Today is a great day for men's health in Texas," Sen. Patrick said. "This bill will greatly improve men's healthcare in Texas, provide men the information that they deserve through informed consent of a pulsating, probing, and long duration anal probe, and will undoubtedly save thousands of lives."

After the ceremony Dr. Miller joined Dr. Patrick in performing a medical procedure to remove Perry's head from his ass.

NOTE: State Senator Dan Patrick and State Representative Sid Miller are the Republicans who wrote and pushed through the Texas vaginal rape law. They would, of course, never actually write a law like the one above -- because that would subject them to the same kind of rape and humiliation they have so happily forced upon Texas women.

Puerto Rico proves both Romney and Santorum are
morons

Santorum RomneyIdiotas.
Rick Santorum, trying to deny Mitt Romney a clean sweep of Puerto Rico's 20 delegates, spent several critical days in the island campaigning, rather than focusing on the big Illinois contest on Tuesday. Given his lack of cash, earned free media is particularly important in the face of the Romney cash juggernaut.

Yet if you're going to campaign somewhere, how about you don't go tell potential voters they are losers for wanting to speak Spanish? The result was predictable, and certainly hilarious:

With about 60 percent of the ballots counted, Romney had about 83 percent of the vote, according to Puerto Rico's electoral commission. Rick Santorum was in second place with just under 8 percent.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! I bet he wishes he'd camped out in downstate Illinois instead, or at least kept his stupid mouth shut.

Then Romney's opened his trap:

"Those people who don't think Latinos will vote for a Republican need to take a look at Puerto Rico," he said.

"I intend to become our nominee, and I intend to get Latino voters to vote for a Republican and take back the White House," he added.

Right, dude.

With 69 percent reporting, there were about 91,000 votes cast. Let's do a linear projection and say 132,000 or so will have ended up voting, or about 3.5 percent of the island's population. Now if you want to claim Latinos will vote for you because a tiny handful of people on an island that has pretty much nothing but Latinos voted for you, feel free, but we'll all get a fantastic laugh out of it. I mean, when a Fox News poll shows you getting 14 percent (or less) among Latinos, getting a tiny handful of wingnut Boricua isn't going to change any narratives.

Nice try, though.

p.s. 385,000 Puerto Ricans participated in the June 1, 2008 Democratic primary in 2008, in a contest that came after Obama had wrapped up the nomination (by clinching a majority of pledged delegates on May 20). How is that for context?

Will California Take The Lead In Overturning
Citizens United

A few weeks ago we reported that Eric Griego helped lead a successful battle to get New Mexico to demand, as a state, that its congressional representatives work towards the passage of a constitutional amendment to overturn the corrupt and anti-democratic Citizens United decision by a 5-4 majority from an egregiously corporate-oriented Supreme Court. It has to happen in every state. And it looks like the biggest state could well be next... yes, California.

The Judiciary Committee of the state Assembly has announced it will hold a hearing this Tuesday (at 10AM) on Joint Resolution 22, a resolution calling for a constitutional amendment to overturn the Court's tragically flawed ruling. Public Citizen is asking Californians to contact their state legislators about it to let them know where they stand.

The Citizens United decision led to an upsurge in spending by outside groups. In the 2010 election cycle, the first since the decision, a single Super PAC organization, American Crossroads, spent more than $3.2 million in attack ads against Sen. Barbara Boxer alone, for example.

Efforts to rein in corporate political spending are in motion nationwide. Last week, Vermont passed 65 local resolutions calling for a constitutional amendment. More than 4,000 people have signed up nationwide to lead local efforts throughout the spring to pass resolutions in more than 1,000 cities and towns. City councils have passed resolutions calling for an amendment throughout California-- including Los Angeles, Oakland, Davis, Fort Bragg, Richmond, Marina, Petaluma and Fairfax-- and across the country, ranging from New York City to Duluth, Minn., and South Miami, Fla.

Citizens United is a deadly weapon in the hands of the 1%-- of the oligarchs, the corporations, the reactionaries and the plutocrats to fulfill their dream of dismantling democracy itself. And it isn't only about the hundreds of millions of dollars these people are pouring into the Romney campaign now that the Supreme Court has opened the floodgates to unlimited giving. Last week Roll Call reported on how these same extremist, anti-American elements are plotting to further take over Congress on behalf of the wealthy.
Super PACs and other unrestricted groups have moved beyond the presidential campaign trail to target key House and Senate races, and Congressional candidates don?t know whether to laugh or cry.

Several candidates have asked their opponents to pledge to bar super PACs and similar third-party groups from their races, emulating the pact signed in January by Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) and his Democratic challenger, Elizabeth Warren.

Yet many House and Senate candidates who publicly decry super PACs are benefiting from the outside groups that back them. Some lawmakers are even donating to or helping raise money for super PACs, which are more likely to tilt close House and Senate contests than the presidential race.

Congressional candidates? love-hate relationship with super PACs has fueled squabbles and campaign attacks in California, Missouri, Montana and Virginia, as outside groups pour millions of dollars into House and Senate contests. Top spenders include the League of Conservation Voters, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the GOP nonprofit Crossroads Grassroots Policy Strategies.

So far this year, $130,518,425 has been raised-- almost entirely from wealthy people with a 1% agenda-- to buy elections. One PAC alone-- basically funded by two dozen billionaires and multimillionaires, almost all of them criminal financial operatives-- has raised $36,797,202 for Romney's SuperPAC. Gingrich's clownish SuperPAC has raised $13,114,797, almost every dime of it from a Mafia connected international gambling magnate. Sheldon Adelson, hoping to push Washington into lowering his taxes and bombing Iran-- two ideas Gingrich has, of course, embraced. Another far right SuperPAC financed by sociopaths dedicated to destroying democracy, American Crossroads, has raised $23,439,951 and Freedomworks, a similar outfit financed by similarly sleazy interests has brought in another $3,045,084. Even a hopeless boob like Rick Perry managed to raise $5,485,885-- and over a million of it is still left over, likely to go to whichever Republican offers Perry the plummiest job.

53% Favor Immediate Withdrawal of All U.S. Forces
From Afghanistan

A narrow majority now favor a quick end to America’s longest war, according to a new Rassmussen poll, which found that 53 percent of likely voters favor “an immediate withdrawal of all U.S. troops from Afghanistan.” The poll comes after after relations between the U.S. and Afghanistan have reached a new low in the wake of recent massacre allegedly by a rogue American soldier.
