Now We're Talking Live Blogging

8:42 PM: Okay now we're talking. This is my kind of debate. Mitt's contempt-drenched laugh in Perry's face. Romney's putting his hands on Perry's body. And then it got really fun. Wow. Thoughts? 8:45 PM: Okay, I'm just going from what I heard[...]

Offspring of the 1% (and 1% Wannabes)

This may be my favorite New Yorker cover
ever. (Oh yes, it's by Barry Blitt.)

by Ken

It isn't always easy adjusting to the modern-day media mishmosh. I had already read two pretty substantial -- well, long, anyway -- pieces in the new (October 24) New Yorker, Ken Auletta's look at the new executive editor of the New York Times, Jill Abramson, and Slate columnist Nathan Heller's somewhat odd but not entirely off-base lookback at film critic Pauline Kael -- but didn't realize until I opened my mailbox today that I had never seen the cover. I just love this cover! So much so that I wish I had a proper post to go with it.

While I was trying to think of one, I started watching last night's episode of 2 Broke Girls, which I'm not crazy about, but which I've continued to watch, or at least have the DVR record. The premise of the show is almost too embarrassing to rehash: Hoity-toity blonde ex-heiress Caroline (Beth Behrs) has been defrocked owing to her billionaire daddy's arrest for embezzlement, and winds up rooming with as well as waitressing alongside perpetual fringe-dweller Max (Kat Dennings). All Caroline has retained from her old life is her horse, Chester.
In this episode the ladies -- who are saving up to launch a cupcake business -- have had the inspiration to charge rich swells who have invaded their Williamsburg dive $100 a head to party with Chester. Caroline, however, has for the second time retreated to the safety of the dive's walk-in freezer when her ex-boyfriend, who dumped her when her life fell apart, walks into the joint. Here Max tries to talk Caroline out of the freezer.

Max (Kat Dennings) and Caroline (Beth Behrs)
MAX: Just go out there and tear his sorry white ass a new one.
CAROLINE: I can't face him, Max.
MAX: Why? He's the one who didn't call you.
CAROLINE: I can't face him because I'm a waitress. Last time he saw me I was a billionaire in a townhouse. Now I'm a waitress in a walk-in freezer.
MAX: So why you wer laying around in your trust fund doing nothing every day, having other people scrub your toilet, you could hold your head up high? But now that you support yourself by earning your own money, that's somehow shameful? Who cares what he thinks? He's the guy who just paid a hundred dollars [slowing down] to party with a horse. He's the loser, not you.
CAROLINE: Really? 'Cause he's out there havin gfun, and I'm in here [noticing what she's holding] hugging a tub of expired blue cheese.

You do see the connection, don't you?

Bernanke: Fed may need to pop asset bubbles

As in the asset bubbles that the Bernanke's Fed policy has created?

U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said on Tuesday that central banks may need to resort to monetary policy to combat asset bubbles, although regulation should be a first line of defense.

"The possibility that monetary policy could be used directly to support financial stability goals, at least on the margin, should not be ruled out," he said at a conference at the Boston Federal Reserve Bank.

Erin Burnett Panel Drowned Out by #OWS Protesters

Erin Burnett Panel Drowned Out by #OWS Protesters

Click here to view this media

Just before the start if GOP presidential debate in Nevada, Erin Burnett and her panel had a little bit of trouble broadcasting from their outdoor studio as they were drowned out by the Occupy Wall Street protesters and chants of "Banks got bailed out! We got sold out!"

After TeaNN's relentless promotion of the AstroTurf "tea party" and Burnett's derisive treatment of the protesters during her opening show, I can't think of a more fitting bunch to have to put up with this, other than anyone from Fox "News."

The freakshow hits Sin City: Republicans
debate in Las Vegas #6

GOP 2012 DebateTalk about it here. Watch it live on CNN or cnn.com.

5:57 PM PT: If you think about it, Romney's defense on having hired undocumented workers is pretty funny: basically he said he hired a company to tend his grounds, and that he had no idea who the company hired. That's certainly a plausible scenario, but how many people do you know who have lawns so big that they have no idea who is working on them?

5:58 PM PT: Rick Perry is ranting about the evils of green energy. I suppose that's reasonable given that the nitwit believes we have 300 years of energy in the ground. Oh, and he doesn't support repealing the 14th amendment (which includes among other things, birthright citizenship).

5:59 PM PT: Santorum reminds us that he is the most Godly man on the stage, and says that's why he is the best candidate for Latinos.

6:04 PM PT: Gingrich dodges the Yucca question, says scientists picked it, and he believes it should chosen scientifically. Mitt Romney comes out against Yucca, as does Ron Paul, though Romney says Nevada should be allowed to name a price. Perry says he completely agrees with Romney.

6:07 PM PT: Rick Perry is trying to squirrel out of having endorsed TARP, but Santorum does a fairly good job of not letting him do it. Romney, who is up front about having supported TARP, basically stays out of trouble.

The freakshow hits Sin City: Republicans
debate in Las Vegas #5

GOP 2012 DebateTalk about it here. Watch it live on CNN or cnn.com.

5:46 PM PT: Perry's accusing Romney of lying about having hired undocumented immigrants. Romney finally explains that yes he did hire a company which had hired undocumented immigrants. The crowd is heavily pro-Romney, but I wouldn't take that as being reflective of the GOP overall?Romney has deep ties to Nevada.

The freakshow hits Sin City: Republicans
debate in Las Vegas #4

GOP 2012 DebateTalk about it here. Watch it live on CNN or cnn.com.

5:36 PM PT: Just before the break, Michele Bachmann claimed the Obama administration wants to repeal the health care law (her thin thread of logic is that the financing issues with the CLASS act provision). She is Rick Perry's intellectual superior. Barely.

5:38 PM PT: We're now in commercial break, but can you believe what a bunch of clowns these guys are? I know Romney polls the best against Obama, but with what he said yesterday about wanting to speed up foreclosures to allow investors to snap up cheap homes that they can rent back to the people who just got evicted, I don't think he's nearly as good a candidate as he's supposed to be. Can't wait for the real debate.

5:39 PM PT: Anderson wants to know if there's any element of health care reform that Ron Paul would keep, Paul of course says no, but I hope all candidates are asked this question. They need to say no, and it's an answer that will bit eth eventual nominee in the ass. (Preexisting conditions, etc.)

5:40 PM PT: Cain also says there is not a single element of 'Obamacare' that he would keep. I'm still hoping each candidate goes on record opposing every single provision of the legislation. It will bite them in ass.

5:42 PM PT: Rick Perry says that even though 25% of Texans don't have insurance, health care is great.

5:43 PM PT: Whoa, Perry and Romney just got in a fight about who hates brown people more. Lots of screaming at each other, it was quite entertaining, though depressing to watch one of our two major parties so deeply committed to hatred.
