Obama On Target With Immigrant Decision

A couple of days ago, President Obama announced a new policy the government will be taking toward young immigrants who came to America as children. The new policy says that those immigrants who are under 30 years old, came to the United States before the age of 16, have lived in the United States for at least five years, pose no criminal or security threat, and have been successful students or served in the U.S. military will qualify for a two-year deferral from deportation.

The congressional Republicans are howling with outrage over the new policy, calling it "amnesty" in disguise. Of course, it isn't. It is simply a two-year deferment. But it will give those young people time to apply for a work permit ( and hopefully start on the path toward obtaining full citizenship).

The president noted that these young immigrants "study in our schools, play in our neighborhoods, befriend our kids, pledge allegiance to our flag. It makes no sense to expel talented young people who are, for all intents and purposes, Americans." And he is right. Many of these young people have really known no country but the United States. But even more important, these young people have already shown that they would be an asset to the United States. They have shown they are the kind of hard-working, honest, and decent people that we hope all immigrants could be.

In a country like ours, that was built by immigrants, this new policy makes sense. Hispanic leaders immediately applauded the new policy as a step in the right direction (and the Republicans mean-spirited reaction will only insure they get very few votes in the Hispanic community this November). But there is evidence that this move by the president will also be approved by a much larger percentage of all Americans.

A new Gallup Poll, taken between June 7th and 10th of a random national sample of 1,004 adults, shows that more than twice as many Americans (66%) think immigration is good for America as those (29%) who think it is bad (see the graph above). And it just makes sense that this 66% of all Americans would think that young people who have already proven themselves (through academic success or military service) would be a valuable asset to this country.

Some may think the people responding positively in the poll to immigration, but a second question in the Gallup survey shows that is probably not true. When asked whether it is more important to develop a plan to deal with the undocumented immigrants in this country or to close our borders to further immigration, a significant majority opted for the former. Since even the right-wing admits it is virtually impossible to try and deport all undocumented immigrants, that plan must be to come up with a way to grant legal residence status (and possibly even a path to citizenship). Here are the percentages of those who want a sane plan to deal with undocumented immigrants:

General public...............55%
Republicans...............47%
Independents...............54%
Democrats...............65%

The president didn't just do the right thing by instituting this new policy -- he did the smart thing. The congressional Republicans may be making their teabagger base happy with their opposition, but they are just further separating themselves from the majority of Americans.

Romney Could Lose All 3 "Home" States

In the past presidential elections, even a losing candidate could count on one thing -- winning his home state. This has been true even of candidates that were soundly trounced in the general election. But it looks like Willard Mitt Romney (aka Wall Street Willie) will not be able to do that. If he wins, it will have to be without any of the states he could claim as his home state (which is remarkable, since there are three of them).

Romney was born in the state of Michigan. But it was Massachusetts where he launched his political career (becoming governor of that state), and he still has a home in that state. In addition, Romney has a mansion in California, which he is currently in the process of enlarging (and even putting in an elevator for his automobiles). Conceivably, he could claim any of the three as his "home" state.

It is extremely unlikely that he could win either Massachusetts or California. Even right-wing pundits have written both of those states off, as they are solidly in the Obama column. Romney winning either of those two states would be considered nothing short of a miracle. That leaves only Michigan if he is to follow tradition.

But a recent poll shows Romney trailing badly in Michigan. The Rasmussen Poll, a poll with normally a Republican bias, shows Romney trailing President Obama by eight points in Michigan.  Here are the results:

President Obama...............50%
Mitt Romney...............42%
Other candidate...............4%
Undecided...............4%

Bernie & Barbara Want To Fix The Fed

It was bad enough that the Wall Street bankers played fast and loose with the few regulations that Republicans had left in place, and in doing so, kicked off the current recession. But what is even crazier is to let those same greedy bankers on the governing board of the Federal Reserve (which sets monetary policy for this country). And Senators Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) and Barbara Boxer (D-California) agree that doing so is sheer madness. Here is what they have to say:

Can you believe that, only four years after Wall Street and the Big Banks brought our economy to its knees, many of those same bank CEOs are helping to shape policy at the Federal Reserve?

Talk about the fox guarding the hen house. These executives are serving as directors of the very same Federal Reserve that bailed them out in 2008 -- and is supposed to regulate them today.

It's unbelievable, and we've got to do everything we can to end these outrageous conflicts of interest.

The General Accounting Office has detailed instance after instance of top executives of financial institutions and corporations who could have used their influence as Federal Reserve directors to financially benefit their firms -- including board members who were affiliated with banks and companies that received near-zero-interest emergency loans from the Federal Reserve during the financial crisis.

The American people deserve a Federal Reserve that is truly independent from the financial institutions it supervises and oversees. That?s why our Federal Reserve Independence Act would:

? Prohibit banking executives or employees of companies regulated by the Fed from serving on the Federal Reserve?s board of directors;
? Prohibit the banking industry from choosing any members of the Federal Reserve?s board of directors; and
? Prohibit Fed employees or board members from owning stock or investing in companies that the Fed regulates, supervises or oversees with absolutely no exceptions.
Americans deserve a Federal Reserve that works for them, not just the top one percent. Congress needs to pass the Federal Reserve Independence Act -- and you can help us do it.

It is time for change at the Fed -- real change. Thank you for joining us and helping to make that change happen.

Sincerely,

Bernie Sanders and Barbara Boxer
U.S. Senators

If you would like to add your support to this crusade to fix the Fed (and I urge you to do so), you can go here and become a citizen co-sponsor of this effort.
