Rasmussen: Tea Parties "Prompt" Secession
Question

Conservative pollster Scott Rasmussen writes:

The secession question was prompted by "tea parties" nationwide on April 15 to express frustration about the high level of new federal government spending. But President Obama has maintained solid approval ratings over the past month in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll.

Yes, the main Tea Party message turned out to be about secession. In case you were wondering, 70% of Texans are not as idiotic as their Governor - they know that Texas does not have a right to secede.

Speaking for me only

On Hannity , North falsely claimed DHS says
right-wing extremism is "number one threat to American safety"

During the April 16 edition of Fox News' Hannity, Fox News host Oliver North falsely claimed that a recent Department of Homeland Security (DHS) report -- which concluded that "rightwing extremists may be gaining new recruits by playing on their fears about several emergent issues" -- concluded that "right-wing extremism is the number one threat to American safety and security." North added: "That means that if you're a Hamas organizer or a Hezbollah recruiter or a Somali terrorist trying to[...]

Weekly Tracking Poll: Dems Maintain An Edge

Research 2000 for Daily Kos. 4/13-4/16/2009. All adults. MoE 2% (04/05-04/09 results):

FAVORABLEUNFAVORABLENET CHANGEPRESIDENT OBAMA69 (68)27 (29)+3PELOSI:37 (36)45 (46)+2REID:35 (34)49 (49)+1McCONNELL:22 (23)57 (56)-2BOEHNER:17 (18)60 (58)-3CONGRESSIONAL DEMS:44 (43)50 (51)+2CONGRESSIONAL GOPS:16 (18)69 (68)-3 DEMOCRATIC PARTY:52 (51)42 (42)+1REPUBLICAN PARTY:24 (26)67 (66)-3

Full crosstabs here. This poll is updated every Friday morning, and you can see trendline graphs here.

With a MoE of 2, it takes more than twice that to call it "significant", but the best way to read these small changes is to say that it was a better week for Dems than Rs, and that the trend lines tell the story. For example, the right/wrong track is now the best it's been since the poll started in January, Obama's fav's remain strong, and the GOP remains (in a political sense) significantly unpopular.

Here are the Congressional parties:

And here are the national parties:

Charlie Cook looks at his own numbers and comes to a similar conclusion:

As I wrote last week, for clues about what the political environment will be in November 2010, watch the economy, President Obama's job-approval ratings, and the generic congressional ballot test. The jury will be out on each of those factors for another year and a half, but new data hint at where they now stand.

Although the economy continues to be in "one-step-forward, one-step-back" mode, it is doing better than even a month or two ago. And Obama's numbers are holding up impressively well.

I encourage everyone to click that link, but one other thing (among many, including a good generic ballot test for Dems) from that Cook/RT Strategies poll of note:

Next, voters were asked which of these statements was closest to their own view: "I like Obama personally, and I like his policies"; "I like Obama personally, but I do not like his policies"; "I do not like Obama personally, but I like his policies"; "I do not like Obama personally, and I do not like his policies." A majority, 51 percent, liked Obama and his policies; 23 percent liked him but not his policies; 3 percent did not like him but liked his policies; 13 percent did not like him or his policies; and 11 percent weren't sure.

That should put to rest the "unpopular Obama policy" argument for a few hours. Obama remains more popular than his policies, but the policies are themselves popular enough (54-36). Glomming on to the usual April 15th tax protest fringe doesn't change that.

Obama Appointee Described by SEC as Arranging $1M
Pay-for-Play Payoff

It's all so damned incestuous, isn't it?

The man leading the Obama administration?s efforts to restructure the auto industry has been described in Securities and Exchange Commission documents as having arranged for his investment firm to pay more than $1 million to obtain New York State pension business.

Although he is not named in the documents, a person with knowledge of the inquiry said the investment executive is Steven Rattner, co-founder of the Quadrangle Group, the prominent private equity firm.

The S.E.C. complaint, filed as part of an expansive state and federal investigation into corruption at the state pension fund, details the efforts of Quadrangle to gain business from the pension fund beginning in 2004.

The person who received most of the $1 million-plus payment has been indicted, accused of selling access to the fund.

There is no indication in the complaint that Mr. Rattner faces criminal or civil charges in connection with the inquiry.

'Pensacola Jeff': One brave soul speaks the
truth, and is greeted by boos, at teabagging party in Pensacola, FL

video details and more

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT
by Chad Rubel

You may have thought everything that was said at the teabagging parties on Wednesday was right-wing drivel designed to mislead and inflame the masses.

Well, there was at least one brave soul in Pensacola, Florida.

"Pensacola Jeff" is what we'll call him because, well, his name is Jeff and he spoke in Pensacola.

He weaves in and out throughout his speech, using talking points designed to get cheers from the crowd, and sneaking in the truth like vegetables to a picky eater.

PJ starts out with a big shout-out to the troops and veterans. That line gets huge applause, as it should. Then he gives us a history lesson.

"Back in 2000, there was a budget surplus in the country."

After PJ mentions the budget surplus, some guy in the crowd yells out, "What happened?"

Well, let's find out.

"And during the next seven years, it was destroyed by the budget and spending of the Bush Administration. And here we are today, here we are today in a situation."
