My Left Wing Iranian Elections Chatter

Stunning news from Iran:  Iran's "Supreme Leader" (Ayatolla) orders probe into VOTE RIGGING. This is a massive reversal from his declaration that the (fraudulent) Ahmadinejad win was a "divine assessment."

6:25 AM ET -- Supreme Leader Khamenei orders vote rigging probe. A huge development just in from the Associated Press:

Iran's supreme leader ordered Monday an investigation into allegations of election fraud, marking a stunning turnaround by the country's most powerful figure and offering hope to opposition forces who have waged street clashes to protest the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

State television quoted Ayatollah Ali Khamenei directing a high-level clerical panel, the Guardian Council, to look into charges by pro-reform candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, who has said he is the rightful winner of Friday's presidential election.

The decision comes after Mousavi wrote a letter appealing to the Guardian Council and met Sunday with Khamenei, who holds almost limitless power over Iranian affairs. Such an election probe by the 12-member council is uncharted territory and it not immediately clear how it would proceed or how long it would take.

Election results must be authorized by the council, composed of clerics closely allied with the unelected supreme leader. All three of Ahmadinejad's challengers in the election -- Mousavi and two others -- have made public allegations of fraud after results showed the president winning by a 2-to-1 margin.

"Issues must be pursued through a legal channel," state TV quoted Khamenei as saying. The supreme leader said he has "insisted that the Guardian Council carefully probe this letter."

The day after the election, Khamenei urged the nation to unite behind Ahmadinejad and called the result a "divine assessment."

Considering the fact that, by many accounts, the Iranian powers that be have cut off most avenues of internet and telephonic contact with the outside world, there is amazing journalism happening all over the place around this story -- just not on television.

Howard Dean: Senator Conrad making a "big
mistake" on health care reform

You'll recall that Senator Kent Conrad, Democrat of North Dakota, said recently that he opposes the public option in health care reform (i.e., have a federal government health plan that would compete with private insurers, forcing them to actually give us quality coverage at a reasonable price). Howard Dean says Conrad is making a big mistake, and falling right into the insurance industry's hands.

Interesting that Kent Conrad, like Mary Landrieu, has no such problem with the federal government making sure that he and his staff get excellent health coverage and great rates (and you'd better believe that Blue Cross would never tell Senator Conrad that he hit his annual limit on prescription drugs). Conrad is just like all the politicians on the Hill. He wants to make sure that you don't get what he's got, otherwise what's the point in being king?

Netanyahu: Here Are My Conditions Which, If Met,
Would Lead Me To Consider Supporting Some Kind of Palestinian State Or Entity

"Palestinians must clearly and unambiguously recognize Israel as the state of the Jewish people."

"Palestinians will not be able to import missiles into their territory, to field an army, to close their airspace to us, or to make pacts with the likes of Hizbullah and Iran. It is impossible to expect us to agree in advance to the principle of a Palestinian state without assurances that this state will be demilitarized. On a matter so critical to the existence of Israel, we must first have our security needs addressed."

"Clear commitments that in a future peace agreement, the territory controlled by the Palestinians will be demilitarized: namely, without an army, without control of its airspace, and with effective security measures to prevent weapons smuggling into the territory - real monitoring, and not what occurs in Gaza today. And obviously, the Palestinians will not be able to forge military pacts."

Palestinians must "fight terror, strengthening governance and the rule of law, [educate] their children for peace and {stop} incitement against Israel."

"The Palestinian Authority will have to establish the rule of law in Gaza and overcome Hamas."

The Palestinian leadership must rise and say that we "recognize the right of the Jewish People to a state in its own Land."

The Palestinian refugee problem must be "solved outside of the borders of the State of Israel."

Jerusalem must remain "the united capital of Jerusalem."

If the Palestinians meet ALL these conditions, Israel will "discuss permanent arrangements."
