For a president that spent six years signing every bloated budget bill he could find, and who has been a bigger spender than any president since LBJ, Bush has suddenly found his inner tightwad, at least as far as education, healthcare, and worker protections are concerned.President Bush vetoed a $606 billion spending bill Tuesday [...]

Add to myYahoo!Howard "Cookie" Krongard said he's just learned that his brother is on Blackwater's advisory board and has formally recused himself from investigating the company.
Rep. Patrick Lynch (D-MA) asked when Krongard learned his brother, A.B. "Buzzy" Krongard was on Blackwater's board. Krongard said that he just learned about his brother's position, and had a single phone conversation with him in early October -- "about five, six weeks ago" -- in which Buzzy told Cookie that he didn't have "a significant financial interest" in Blackwater. Blackwater has multi-million contracts with the State Department.
Company spokeswoman Anne Tyrrell told me the advisory board was formed in the summer. I'm still trying to learn the exact date Buzzy joined up, but that would be before Buzzy's phone conversation with his brother. Cookie Krongard told Rep. Lynch that his brother didn't mention taking a position on the advisory board, although Buzzy "may have said" that Blackwater approached him about one. "I am not my brother's keeper," Cookie Krongard said.
Video soon.

Add to myYahoo!Firedoglake and the Chris Dodd campaign are kicking the Senate Judiciary whip operation back into gear again.
At stake: the giveaway of corporate welfare, law-busting immunity amnesty indulgences for the poor, oppressed telecommunications giants, and a Congressional green light on data mining and the resurrection of Total Information Awareness.
Call Senate Judiciary Committee Dems for free with Dodd's Citizen Whip widget:
Click the chart, choose a Senator, give 'em your phone number, and they'll call you up and connect you.
Some techmology, innit?
UPDATE: Also at stake -- "compromise" language that excuses the telecom companies from lawsuits, and puts the government it its place. So again, telecoms get to skate on the legal fees, and you pay them instead.

And you look at it and you isolate it, and you see what the American people were told, which was just a[...]

Add to myYahoo!Iraq's Ministry of the Interior could be considered to have "dissociative identity disorder," the bureaucratic equivalent of "a heavily-muscled and well-armed individual with extremely poor physical coordination who suffers from multiple personality disorder," according to a new CSIS report on Iraq's internal security forces.

Add to myYahoo! This issue may not be covered as much recently in the corporate media because apparently a 24 hour news cycle only allows any given media outlet to focus on the latest, dramatic one or two stories in the news- covering multiple ongoing stories is not really their strong-point.Here is an interview with journalist Jeremy [...]

Add to myYahoo! The Musharaf rule in Pakistan is taking cues from the Bushies. They've arrested the most famous person in Pakistan, Imran Khan. I'm guessing this is not going to be a pretty end here.
