Via How Appealing, a Texas Court of appeals has reversed the verdict against Merck in the Vioxx case. I found this interesting:
After the trial, a juror admitted borrowing thousands of dollars from [deceased Plainff]Garza's widow, Felicia Garza, although that does not seem to have been a factor in Wednesday's appellate court decision.
The opinion is here.

Add to myYahoo!Barack Obama sat down with the Atlantic?s Jeffrey Goldberg to discuss U.S. policy towards Israel, and for the first 95% of the interview, Obama offered a solid, uncontroversial position, which included effusive praise for the Jewish state.Asked if he perceived Israel as “a drag on America?s reputation overseas,” Obama said:“No, no, no. But what I [...]

Add to myYahoo!RUMSFELD: That's what I was just going to say. This President's pretty much a victim of success. We haven't had an attack in five years. The perception of the threat is so low in this society that it's not surprising that the behavior pattern reflects a low threat assessment. The same thing's in Europe, there's a low threat perception. The correction for that, I suppose, is an attack.
Congressional Democrats on Tuesday announced that they have reached a tentative agreement on a $3.3 trillion fiscal year 2009 budget resolution that rejects reductions in spending for Medicare and Medicaid proposed by President Bush, the New York Times reports. Bush has estimated that his legislative proposals over five years would reduce spending for Medicare by $178 billion and spending for Medicaid by $17 billion. According to Senate Budget Committee Chair Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), the agreement also would provide "about $20 billion" more for military and domestic programs than the $991.6 billion requested by Bush (Pear, New York Times, 5/14). House Budget Committee Chair John Spratt (D-S.C.) declined to disclose additional details about the agreement (Clarke, CQ Today, 5/13).

Add to myYahoo! The California Supreme Court will issue its same-gender marriage ruling tomorrow at 10am Pacific time. More from the Chronicle:
More than four years after San Francisco defied state marriage laws by allowing nearly 4,000 same-sex couples to wed at City Hall, the state Supreme Court is set to decide Thursday whether gays and lesbians have a constitutional right to marry in California. If it's a presidential election year, it's gay marriage.
But the decision, due at 10 a.m., may not be the last word. Conservative religious organizations have submitted more than 1.1 million signatures for an initiative that would amend the state Constitution to outlaw same-sex marriage. If at least 694,354 signatures are found to be valid, a tally that is due by mid-June, the measure would go before the voters in November and could override a court ruling in favor of same-sex marriage.
