Add to myYahoo!Blue Dog Democrat Travis Childers has won the special election for the MS-01 Congressional race. As a Democrat, I always prefer the Democrat over the Republican. As a progressive, Childers is not a very exciting win. He is anti-choice, anti-gay marriage and very conservative generally. So one cheer for a Dem winning. I save my two cheers for progressives winning.

Add to myYahoo!Chris "Tweety" Matthews, speaking from the ObamaLand that is the Obama News Network, NBC, is talking about Hillary Clinton living in "HillaryLand." It is one of the more amazing "news" broadcasts one has ever seen.
Forget for a moment that indeed Hillary Clinton has at best a very long shot to win the nomination. This is true imo. But is that REALLY the only story of the night? (In ObamaLand, Tweety is predicting a "surprisingly close" Kentucky result.) Remember this is supposed to be a NEWS network. Not a propaganda arm for Barack Obama.
The problem that has not passed the lips of anyone on the Obama News Network - the "presumptive nominee" lost by 40 points in a primary. Has this EVER happened? How could it have happened? What does it mean? Nothing to question or concern yourself with this result according to the Obama News Network. What a "performance." Certainly this is not a news network.

Add to myYahoo! It’s a mild surprise that John Edwards is getting about 7% of the WV vote and no surprise that Clinton’s winning by 39% so far, with 72% of the vote counted. But the HUGE news is the Democrat, Travis Childers, winning a VERY Republican 1st District race in Mississippi. The district has been voting 59% [...]

Add to myYahoo! Results for the Mississippi First District special election, filling the seat of Senator Roger Wicker.
Travis W. Childers (D): 53% (54029)
Greg Davis (R): 47% (47361)
Update: The AP has called the race for Travis Childers. Mississippi now has three Democratic Representatives...out of four.
Update #2: Congratulations to Rep.-elect Travis Childers, his staff and volunteers, the voters of Mississippi's First District, the DCCC...and the good people at Swing State Project, Cotton Mouth Blog, The Thorn Papers, Will Bardwell, and anyone I'm forgetting :)
Update #3: The NRCC spent over $1.3 million in this race, and that's not counting what shadow groups like Freedom's Watch put in. It's an R+10 district. They ran some ads which were nasty as hell. And their candidate, if not outstanding, was not especially controversial.
We beat them anyway, on their turf.
Update #4: Turnout was astronomical. Especially for a runoff. It's likely that it will exceed 100,000 votes, which is insane; turnout was around 64,000 in the first election.

Add to myYahoo!Tonight I went to the movies with some friends and probably laughed consecutively for a good ninety minutes. What Happens In Vegas, in case you're wondering. But despite the fact that I was with good friends and did enough outloud, fall-off-your-seat laughing to last me an entire week, when I got into my car to drive home I could feel only one thing. Emptiness. Not the kind of emptiness you feel when you are in those places of your life when you forget where you're going or who you really are, but the kind of emptiness that you feel when someone isn't sitting in their favorite chair or one of your childhood landmarks is taken down. I hate this emptiness. It follows me and I can't escape it's shadow. It doesn't find me when I'm busy, but it's there waiting... when I get out of work, when I'm in my car, sometimes after church, usually when I'm in bed, and now apparently, it finds me the moment I stop laughing.
But you know who else emptiness follows? My soldier... who comes back from following other people's orders to spends his nights in a bed that's not his, who isn't missing one thing familiar, but all things familiar... and I think to myself that I would take all of his emptiness if it meant he could experience soft fingertips on his forehead or sheets that felt like home or the smells of Greek cooking. But I can't and I am continually aware of my powerlessness. So I make a daily, if not hourly, choice to believe that out of all of our emptiness will come an appreciation for each other's arms that surpasses the ooey, gooey feelings of dating and developes into a deeper and more mature love than we could have known without absence.
And then I think to myself, that was a great movie... I can't wait to watch it with him when he comes home.

Add to myYahoo! Before there was rock’n'roll– just before– there were The Platters. And before the Doors, Love, X or Black Flag came along, The Platetrs were the L.A. Sound.
