Results: AL, MS, HI

7:47 PM PT (David Nir): FOX is calling Mississippi for Santorum.

7:50 PM PT (David Nir): And now CNN has calls MS for Santo as well. Quite the night!

7:52 PM PT (David Nir): 58% for Bonner (AL-01), 57% for Bachus (AL-06), 57% for Nunnelee (MS-01)?none of these are good numbers for incumbent GOP Reps. Some people take the mistaken view that "anti-incumbent sentiment" is only a meaningful force if incumbents lose. But weak primary wins in the 50s are a sign that something's going on out there, and while these guys may have escaped, the next batch of incumbents may not be so lucky.

7:57 PM PT (David Nir): In AL-06 (R), state Sen. Scott Beason is conceding to Rep. Spencer Bachus. Alabama elects senators in the off years, so Beason gets to keep his seat... for now. But the fact that he lost his hometown tonight paints a big target on his back for 2014.

8:00 PM PT (Steve Singiser): For those just coming home, or sidling up to your computer, Rick Santorum has claimed both of the Deep South primaries tonight, with a sizable win in Alabama coupled with a tighter win in Mississippi. The banner headline of the night, though: Mitt Romney looks increasingly likely to come in third in both primaries. He is 4900 votes behind Newt Gingrich in Alabama, and 2800 votes behind him in Mississippi. As much as the Romney campaign tries to reset the goalposts (aided and abetted by some uproariously bad political analysis in various media outlets), bear in mind two things: (1) Romney wildly outspent everyone, yet again; (2) Romney was calling "his own shot", so to speak, even as recently as today. Romney might have tried to pass it off as "an away game" last week, but then he went all-in. Trying to give him a pass now is analytical malpractice.

Tuesday Stuff

Remember all the wingnut caterwauling over how many pages that baaad ?big gumint Obamacare? bill was? Well, I give you this over something of possibly greater importance concerning our beloved commonwealth (some more great ?ROI? to ALEC from Governor Tom ?Space Cadet? Corbett...Will Bunch said awhile back how awful the PA DEP head Michael Krancer was ? Nail. Hammer. Head.)...

...and I figure I?d better put up this video now before all places like it in PA are hopelessly polluted beyond repair as a result (and with probably with the same automaton-like apathy in this video by some of the people living there to go along with it).

Daily Kos Elections liveblog thread #6

Daily Kos Elections Liveblog BannerSign up here to have the Daily Kos Elections Digest emailed to you every weekday morning

Results: AL, MS, HI

7:25 PM PT (David Nir): I don't know why it took so long, but the AP has now finally joined its brethren and called Alabama for Santorum. So now we wait on MS....

7:27 PM PT: Wondering what's ahead?

Puerto Rico this Saturday, an open primary with 23 winner-take-all delegates. If you're a Democrat, vote Santorum!

Next Tuesday, a big race in Illinois. Romney already $3.2 million in the state's air war. No one else has spent a dime. Yet as we've seen time and time again, all of Romney's money in the world can't save him from being hated.

On paper, Illinois looks like fertile Romney territory, particularly the moderate-Republican Chicago collar counties. But downstate should be favorable to Santorum.

Illinois is also an open primary state, so Democrats can vote. There are important competitive Democratic congressional primaries in CD's -08, -10, -12, -13, and -17. If you're in one of those, vote Democratic. Everyone else should cast a vote for Santorum -- because if Santorum can pull this off, then win Louisiana the following Saturday March 24, Romney's plight will turn from difficult to dire.

7:28 PM PT (Kaili Joy Gray): GOP to President Obama: We get to humiliate Romney first.
@LOLGOP via Facebook

7:32 PM PT (Jed Lewison): Rick Santorum giving his victory speech from his Lafayette, Louisiana headquarters. Louisiana votes on Saturday?the next big contest. Santorum is wearing a pink tie. First words out of his mouth: "We did it again."

7:33 PM PT (Jed Lewison): "This is a grassroots campaign for President ... who would have ever thought that ordinary folks could defy the odds day in and day out."

7:36 PM PT: Drudge, earlier today:

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

7:37 PM PT (Jed Lewison): Rick Santorum's speech is all about defying odds and believing in something bigger than oneself. Mitt Romney's speeches are all about how he's got the delegate math and resistance is futile. Santorum has really got an advantage over Mitt on this, despite all of Mitt's money. Nobody believes in Mitt. People, misguided though they may be, actually believe in Santorum and what he stands for. They have no idea that he'll lose by double digits in November, though.

7:38 PM PT (Jed Lewison): And just like Drudge, Mitt Romney was smoking the crack pipe yesterday:

Quick flashback -- @jakesherman reported this prediction from Romney yesterday: "We're going to win tomorrow" http://t.co/...
@aburnspolitico via web

7:39 PM PT (Steve Singiser): While we await the presidential outcome in Mississippi, let's quickly get caught up on Alabama's House races. Two Democrats of reasonable notoriety are headed in different directions tonight. In AL-04 (northern Alabama), state Rep. Daniel Boman (a rare party switcher from GOP to Democrat) is overcoming an early tight race and leading Rick Neighbors 56-44. Meanwhile, William Barnes, who was the Democratic standard bearer against Senator Dick Shelby in 2010, looks less likely to be on the general election ballot in 2012. In AL-06 (Birmingham suburbs), he trails Penny Bailey 56-44. Meanwhile, on the "vulnerable GOP incumbent" front, both Jo Bonner (AL-01) and Spencer Bachus (AL-06) are still leading outside of the runoff threshold. Indeed, AP just called the Alabama 1st district (Mobile) for Bonner.

7:40 PM PT (Jed Lewison): Santorum thanks his Mississippi supporters for voting for him despite "all the establishment being on the other side." Crowd is pretty raucous. Meanwhile, Mitt Romney is flying somewhere tonight, and won't be speaking.

7:41 PM PT (Jed Lewison): Shots fired at Newt: "The time is now for conservatives to pull together."

Mittsissippi. Or Not.

As we saw in Ohio, these races can go long into the night and surprise you in the end. But at the moment, things are not looking great for Mitt Romney in Mississippi. Could he still win? Absolutely. It's too close to call. But he seems to be[...]

Those Southern voters.

Watching the republican primaries now and it doesn't look like any of the thre main stooges have things locked up. The networks are still saying that it's too close to call in the key Southern states.....wait, are those prison inmates in prison stripes working the polls? Man those Southerners sure love free labor.

If Newt doesn't get a win tonight he really should head off into the sunset and find someone willing to pay him to confuse everyone within earshot of his shrill sounding gibberish.

Fifteen days and counting on this Trayvon Martin case. I wonder what's taking them so long to charge Mr. Zimmerman. I am trying to close my eyes and imagine a different scenario: Black neighborhood watch captain shoots and kills a seventeen year old unarmed white youth. If you guessed that Negro would be under the jail by now you would be correct. But alas, this is A-merry-ca.

"The police have refused to release the tape of the 911 call Zimmerman made that night, as well as the tapes from other 911 calls made by residents regarding the alleged fight between Zimmerman and Trayvon. The family, frustrated after weeks have passed and nothing has been done, have filed a lawsuit to force the police to turn over the 911 tapes as well as all the other investigative documents. They believe they have been lied to by the police and are being given the run around by the local authorities so that Trayvon's killer can go free.

The Martin family?s frustration with Sanford police extends beyond the 911 tapes ? the family also says Sanford police misleadingly told them Zimmerman had a clean criminal history. In fact, Orange County court records show Zimmerman was arrested in 2005 for resisting an officer with violence and battery on a law enforcement officer. The charges were later dropped. [...]

A day earlier, Bill Lee, Sanford?s police chief, said the 911 tapes would not be released because the investigation was still underway.
?There is evidence that George Zimmerman acted in self-defense.? Lee said." [Source]
Check out the rest of Steven D's wonderful article on this story over at Booman Tribune. [h/t Greg Fuller]

Wait, I have an update: The police of Sanford, Florida, who are obviously too
cowardly and afraid to handle this case themselves have decided to turn the case over to the state attorney's office of Florida. [Source]

We will see where it goes from here.

Finally, if you are planning on getting your "Jungle Fever" on you might want to stay away from Alabama and Mississippi:

"While support for interracial marriage is at an all-time high nationally, 29 percent of likely GOP voters in Mississippi and 21 percent in Alabama think that marriage between people of different races should be illegal.
theGrio: Interracial couple express shock over marriage denial
Perhaps because of attitudes in the South, a Pew study released last month found that interracial couples are more likely to reside in the Western United States.

The last U.S. anti-miscegenation laws were overturned in 1967, six years after Barack Obama was born to a white mother and black father. The case of Loving vs. Virginia was one couple?s attempt to fight back against the criminalization of interracial marriage in the South. The Lovings won their case in the Supreme Court, reversing a nearly 84-year-old precedent that was set in Alabama with Pace v. Alabama." [Source]

Oh wait, those are republican voters. Sorry. I guess as long as you stay away from republican hangouts with your significant other you should be fine. Just don't try to vote.

wants to "get rid of" Planned Parenthood

At about 1:02 into the video. It was only in 2005 that Romney suddenly discovered that he was pro-life (NYT).

False Equivalences: Contraception = Gym

What happens when you take a writer for Glenn Beck's The Blaze and give him a forum on CNN? Stupid stuff like this. From CNN's Starting Point.

WILL CAIN: You used this word several times, ?access'. I hope you and I can agree on one term of this debate. That is, no one is attempting to ban contraception or limit access and make it illegal for women to have this! The debate is about who should be providing it, who should be paying for it. Should employers determine what is involved in their compensation, determined in their health care benefits or should the government make certain requirements of employers? Can we agree that is what this debate is about?

SANDRA FLUKE: Not exactly. I think there are multiple ways to limit access. Certainly making something illegal would be the most extreme form, but not covering it as a health care benefit the way other types of health care benefits are covered is another way to limit access and that?s what many women across the country are currently experiencing when they ? even if they have insurance, co pays, can be as high as $50 a month, which is significant for a woman not making a lot of money.

WILL CAIN: But Sandra, couldn?t that same logic be applied to so many other things that health care doesn?t cover, such as gym memberships? Exercise is important to health but that?s not covered by health care insurance. Couldn?t that logic you?re using, saying access is denied because it?s not being offered to you for some reduced price, apply to so many things?

SANDRA FLUKE: I think that that?s not a fair comparison. And most women would tell you that?s not a fair comparison

The Blaze noted that host Soledad O'Brien also took issue with Cain's gym membership analogy after the Fluke segment ended.

SOLEDAD O'BRIEN: I would add to that, isn?t gym membership ? isn?t part of her argument if gym membership were covered for other employees? It?s covered for other people at Georgetown. Her point was that the janitors actually get their contraception covered. The gym membership I think is a flawed analogy.

WILL CAIN: No, it focuses on the right question. Should employers determine the benefits or should the government be mandating what employers provide?

For Cain and others of his ilk, it's quite all right for an employer to dictate benefits and choose what is and what is not considered basic health coverage, as the market is all-knowing and all-powerful. Yet it is quite shameful for an entity representative of the people to have the same powers and judgement, as that would be dictatorial.
