I have to wonder if Rick Perry is living in the real world. Yesterday, he was bragging about the Texas economy and said, "I would tell my friends in Washington that if they want a blueprint for how to get the economy back on track, look at Texas." I don't know what rock he's been hiding under, but he obviously either doesn't know or is trying to hide the truth about the economy here in Texas.
According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the unemployment rate is 6.8% in Texas and rising. Many economists expect it to be over 8% before the end of the year. There are 26,000 new unemployment claims being filed each week, and the state could lose 300,000 jobs this year.
Maybe Perry's corporate buddies are doing well this year, but the same can't be said of the Texas economy in general or the situation ordinary Texans are facing. Texas is not yet in as bad shape as a few other states, but it is sliding fast into serious trouble.
That's why it is troubling that Perry yesterday refused to accept over $550 million in stimulus funds to help the unemployed. Especially in light of the fact that the state does not have enough in it's unemployment fund to last the whole year.
Add to this the fact that this is money that would have to be spent since the unemployed can't afford to save the few dollars they manage to get. That means there's $550 million that will NOT be spent boosting the Texas economy (with each one of those dollars passing through multiple hands). That money could have been a real boost to the state's economic well-being.
But Perry doesn't care about Texas or it's citizens. The only thing he cares about is his own re-election in the 2010 governor's race. He faces a serious opponent (Sen. Hutchison) who is currently leading him in the polls. He's counting on his ultra-right-wing base of Republican voters to carry him through the primary (like Rush Limbaugh's ditto-heads).
He knows the ultra-right wants badly to see the economy worsen and President Obama to fail, and he's willing to help by throwing Texas into the economic garbage bin. He's putting his own ambitions above the well-being of Texans, which should be no surprise since this is not the first time he's done it.
We must remember his vile actions when we go to the polls in November of 2010. ![]()

Jon Stewart made Jim Cramer look like a wounded puppy as the CNBC host joined Jon Stewart after a full week of back and forth after Cramer got perturbed by a segment TDS did on CNBC's financial network. Jon Stewart Eviscerates CNBC and Rick Santelli
He was so mad that he showed up on a bunch of NBC shows crying about the way he was portrayed. Stewart really just said what all of America wanted to say to Wall Street: F*&K You!
Tonight we had the big face off, the heavy weight bout, the super bowl square off between CNBC's Jim Cramer and Comedy Central's Jon Stewart. Cramer got upset that he was included in a segment that TDS produced on the horrible and almost criminal reporting CNBC has been airing as THE go to business network after CNBC's Rick Santelli attacked average working class people who got caught up in the sub-prime mortgage crisis. Santelli dubbed them as "losers." Well, the only loser tonight was Cramer and CNBC.
Jim basically sat there, starry eyed like a lost puppy and was virtually silent throughout the three segment show featuring him as he basically waved the white flag and said, "you got me."
Comedy Central had to edit out eight minutes of video do accommodate the show format and it will be available on their website tomorrow.
Stewart's point was that Wall Street got fat off of all our pension plans, 401K's and long term investments while the "Fast Money" crowd cashed in out our long term investments and CNBC was complicit in the entire gambit...
I wonder if Rick Santelli will show his face on his set? highly unlikely.
Here's more: Stewart hammers Cramer on 'The Daily Show'
Jon Stewart hammered Jim Cramer and his network, CNBC, in their anticipated face-off on "The Daily Show," repeatedly chastising the "Mad Money" host for putting entertainment above journalism.
"I understand that you want to make finance entertaining, but it's not a ... game," Stewart told Cramer, adding in an expletive during the show's Thursday taping. The episode was scheduled to air at 11 p.m. EDT on Comedy Central Cramer insisted he was devoted to revealing corporate "shenanigans," to which Stewart retorted: "It's easy to get on this after the fact."
At one point, Cramer sounded the reformed sinner, responding to Stewart's plea for more levelheaded, honest commentary: "How about I try that?" said Cramer. "I'll do that."
By the end, the two-segment interview went far beyond its allotted time. Comedy Central said the on-air version would be cut by about eight minutes, though the entire interview would be available unedited on ComedyCentral.com on Friday.

Add to myYahoo! But throw a shoe and you get three years in prison. It's hard to see how anyone could ever become cynical.
The Iraqi journalist who hurled his shoes at George Bush, gaining instant hero status in much of the Arab world, has today been sentenced to three years in prison.
Muntazer al-Zaidi, 30, who worked for the al-Baghdadiya television channel, shouted "Long live Iraq" when the sentence was read out.
Zaidi had earlier pleaded not guilty and said his actions were a "natural response to the occupation".
He was given the three-year sentence for assaulting a foreign head of state during an official visit.
After the verdict was announced, his relatives erupted in anger, shouting that the decision was unjust and unfair. Some collapsed and had to be helped from the court. Others were forcibly removed by security forces as they shouted "Down with Bush" and "Long live Iraq".
