Zimmerman Lawyers Quit, Say He Called Sean
Hannity and Prosecutorone Rogue

Late Tuesday evening, Hal Uhrig and Craig Sonner, the attorneys for George Zimmerman, suddenly announced they were dropping out of the case, citing their client’s behavior, which can only be called erratic.

In another important development, reported by the AP, special prosecutor Angela Corey is to make an announcement on the case within 72-hours. Speculation is that charges against Zimmerman could be filed before the weekend, though upon the news breaking no specifics of Corey’s coming announcement were given.

From the AP:

Zimmerman has not talked to or communicated with them since Sunday, said Craig Sonner, one of his lawyers.

Worse, Zimmerman has done two dangerous things, his lawyers said: He telephoned a special prosecutor who’s trying to put together a criminal case against him, and he called Sean Hannity of Fox News.

Both were bad ideas, said Sonner and co-counsel Hal Uhrig.

The call to the office of Special Prosecutor Angela Corey apparently did no harm, Uhrig said.

“They cut him off,” Sonner said.

Still, Uhrig said, “We were a bit astonished.”

The last thing George Zimmerman needs is the circus of right-wing radio and Sean Hannity.

What possessed to call the Special Prosecutor Angela Corey is beyond comprehension.

Zimmerman has also launched a website, however rudimentary, “TheRealGeorgeZimmerman,” which is text only on a background of the American flag. His statement begins by saying he has been “involved in a life altering event which led me to become the subject of intense media coverage.”

Trayvon Martin’s attorney responded to Time magazine:

It?s America, and he has a right to do what he wants to do. The family was a little taken aback that George said he had this life-changing occurrence [and needs money]. Well Trayvon Martin had a life-ending occurrence; his family had to do all this stuff [to get someone] who killed their child to face a judge and a jury. The fact that he has this website and he?s out to do this website, when you see the balance, Trayvon is dead. If it were the reverse, Trayvon would have been arrested by day one.

Fox News Video of Tax-Hating Patriot's Shootout
with Police Honors Him with Gunshow Ad

Salt Lake City's Fox 13 has exclusive video of a deadly shootout in which a well armed tax-hating, small guvmint advocating patriot killed one policeman and wounded four others.

Appropriately enough for the good patriots at Fox, the video is preceded by an advertisement for a gun show (screencaps below), possibly the same annual event where Tim McVeigh fan, Matthew David Stewart, bought his weapons and bomb-making manuals.

Is "Wealth Redistribution" A Bad Thing

Just the other day, Rick Warren (a powerful right-wing fundamentalist preacher) made the statement "I do not believe in income redistribution, I believe in wealth creation." He went on to say the only way to get people out of poverty is to create jobs for them. My first thought upon reading that ridiculous statement was that Warren is either a liar or an idiot. He is either spreading a perverted definition of "wealth redistribution" or he has no idea what "wealth redistribution" is. Either way, he is misleading anyone who listens to him.

The idea he is spreading is that wealth redistribution is something that only goes on in a socialist economy, and it means that money is taken away from hard-working people and given to lazy people who don't want to work. This is the definition that rich people (and their lackeys, congressional Republicans) want the American public to accept, because if Americans accept that definition, then the rich will not have to share any of their wealth in the form of taxes or decent wages & benefits for their workers.

The problem with that definition is that it is simply a lie. It ignores the fact that wealth redistribution goes on in every society and country in the world every day. In fact, no modern economy can work with wealth being continually redistributed -- and that is especially true of a capitalist economy (or as the right-wing now prefers to call it, a "free enterprise" economy).

Every time a consumer purchases a good or service, wealth is being redistributed. Every time a worker receives a paycheck, wealth is being redistributed. Every time an investor makes (or loses) money on an investment, wealth is being redistributed. Every time a citizen pays a tax (at any level of government), wealth is being redistributed. Every time a person gives to a charity, wealth is being redistributed. Every time a financial institution (or individual) loans money, wealth is redistributed (and it is also redistributed when it is paid back with interest).

The truth is that a capitalist economy (actually any kind of economy) requires wealth redistribution. Without the redistribution of wealth, a modern economy would cease to function. Understanding this, we can see that the wrong question is being posed by the right-wing in this country. The question is not do we want wealth redistribution to occur -- we obviously do, since our economy could not function without it. The real question is what kind of wealth redistribution do we want.

There are basically two choices in the United States (since the third choice, communism, is not an option most Americans would even consider). These choices are to have either an unregulated (or pure) capitalist system, or to have a regulated capitalist system. The difference is simply one of fairness.

In an unregulated capitalist system, there are no rules and few (if any) taxes. There are no protections for either consumers or workers. In this system, the wealth will eventually wind up mostly in the hands of a few. This few will be incredibly rich, while the rest of the people in the country will be left to fight for survival.

Since about 1980, the Republican Party has been trying to move this country toward an unregulated capitalism. They have removed many regulations and lowered taxes for the rich. The result is shown in the chart above. By 2010, the richest 20% of Americans has 93% of the country's total wealth (leaving 80% of the population to divide the other 7%). The richest 10% controlled 83% of the total wealth, while the richest 5% controlled 72% of total wealth, and the richest 1% controlled 43% of the country's total wealth.

But this is not good enough for the Republicans (or their rich masters). They want to deregulate even more, and they want to cut taxes for the rich even more. Is this really the kind of economy you want to live in -- where the rich have most of the wealth and everyone else must scramble for the scraps left over? If not, then a well-regulated capitalism is the only option.

The Republicans will tell you that the regulated capitalism is nothing more than socialism. Don't let that scare you. In a regulated capitalism, free enterprise is maintained. But businesses cannot treat consumers unfairly or rip them off, because there are legal protections (regulations). Workers are also protected by safety rules, minimum wage laws, anti-discrimination laws, the right to form unions, and other protections (regulations).

In a regulated capitalism, the rich (and the corporations) are also expected to pay their fair share of taxes. These taxes are used to build infrastructure, run government, defend the country, provide police and fire protection, help the needy and disadvantaged, fund education and training programs, and protect the environment (among other things). In this system, all of the country's citizens share in the nation's wealth. There will still be rich and poor, but in general there is a much fairer distribution of the nation's wealth -- meaning everyone will be better off (and not just the rich).

In both systems there is a continual redistribution of wealth. In the unregulated capitalism, that wealth is redistributed to the rich. In a regulated capitalism, the nation's wealth is shared more evenly and all citizens are helped. Isn't that what we want?

So the next time someone tells you they are opposed to "wealth redistribution", understand that they are either an idiot or a liar. Wealth redistribution happens every day. The real question is whether we want it to be fair, or to go only to the rich.

Santorum Is Out & The Race Continues

(The above caricature is by the inimitable DonkeyHotey.)

Rick Santorum (aka Mr. Frothy) has surprised nearly everyone. He suspended his campaign before his own home state votes on April 24th. Was he afraid he might lose in his home state (Pennsylvania)? Or did he just finally read the writing on the wall, and realize that there was no way for him to win a majority of the delegates and become the nominee? Or did he finally give in to pressure from party officials (who are looking for a way to end this embarrassing debacle).

We'll probably never know what the reason was, but Santorum has now joined the ranks of the other wannabes who've dropped out (like Perry, Cain, Bachmann, Huntsman, Pawlenty, Johnson, and even Trump). Yesterday, Santorum told reporters:

"We made a decision over the weekend that while this presidential race for us is over for me and we will suspend our campaign effective today. We are not done fighting."

Santorum said he had called Romney earlier in the day and informed him of the decision. At this point, it should be noted that there were two things Santorum didn't do. He didn't throw his support behind any other candidate. And he didn't release the delegates he has won so they could support another candidate. All he did was stop campaigning.

Does this move by Santorum officially end the nomination race? Well, no. Willard Mitt Romney (aka Wall Street Willie) still does not have the required number of delegates to give him the nomination. And even if he wins every delegate from the five states voting on April 24th, he will still not have enough delegates. Romney now has to be the odds-on favorite to grab the nomination, but this race is going to continue for a while.

The real question is what are the teabaggers and evangelicals going to do now? Are they going to finally give up and throw their support to Romney (something they've refused to do for months now)? Or are they just going to slide over to another "anti-Romney" candidate (like they have done time after time)? After all, Gingrich is still in the race, and Paul (although he's proven to be too crazy for even the teabaggers and evangelicals). It will be interesting to see what these two groups do now.

For his part, Gingrich was quick to try and grab the Santorum supporters, saying:

"I am committed to staying in this race all the way to Tampa so that the conservative movement has a real choice.  I humbly ask Senator Santorum?s supporters to visit Newt.org to review my conservative record and join us as we bring these values to Tampa."

Racist Killer Disappears - Asks For Money

By now you have to know person in the picture above. It is the racist,George Zimmerman, who killed young Trayvon Martin down in Florida simply because he was an African-American. It has now been well over a month since the shooting, and still, no charges have been filed. Frankly, I don't understand why. It's not like there was a question about who did the shooting. It was Zimmerman, and his victim was unarmed.

And there's no question of whether the shooting was in self-defense. It was not. Zimmerman shouldn't have followed his victim (he was told by police to not do that), he shouldn't have accosted his victim (police were on the way), and he shouldn't have drawn his weapon (since his victim was unarmed). If he had felt in danger, he could have simply driven off. This was as unjustified as a killing can get.

And the whole situation just keeps getting weirder. Zimmerman's attorneys, after spending weeks trying to make excuses for him, have now resigned. They say they have resigned because they don't know where their former client is, and they have been unable to get hold of him after repeated attempts to do so. They believe he has left the state of Florida.

So Zimmerman is now on the run. But that doesn't mean he wouldn't like to make some money off his racist crime. He has created a website, complete with a "donate" button. He is asking people to send their money to him directly. This is sickening. He's actually trying to turn his racist crime into a money-making venture. I would hope he doesn't get a penny, but there are still a lot of sick racists out there so he'll probably get some money. And no, I'm not offering any link to his website. I refuse to help him make money off his sick crime.
