GOP trying to trash Biden's daughter

GOP sources are sending around a six year old article from the paper reporting that Biden's then- 21-year-old daughter was arrested for mouthing off to a cop outside some bars. Yeah, okay. And she apologized to the police afterwards and they let her go. Good. It was a stupid thing of her to do, and she made amends.

But I'm not quite sure what the point is here in Republicans spreading around this article. Biden and Obama both said to leave kids out of it, they didn't take the bait when asked about news reports that Palin's underage unwed daughter was pregnant. In fact, the reason we all know about that story is because John McCain leaked news of the pregnancy to Reuters.

And in any case, Sarah Palin has made pregnancy and abortion and sex education, and more generally religious right "family values" one of her big issues - some argue that Sarah Palin fails the hypocrisy test, living to a different standard than she'd like the government to impose on others. For example, the Reuters story seemed to imply that Palin gave her daughter the choice as to whether to keep the child. Whereas Palin would like to take that choice away from every American man and woman. She wants abortion outlawed in every case other than when the life of the mother is threatened. That doesn't appear to be the standard she used in her own family. The issue isn't her daughter - the issue is Sarah Palin and her own hypocrisy on a variety of "family values" issues.

I don't see where Biden fails the hypocrisy test because his daughter was dumb enough to mouth off to a cop. And in any case, if the Republicans really want to say that families are now on-limits, then should we post the numerous stories in the National Enquierer about Sarah Palin, including a new one today? Should we post the story about McCain's son on Gawker? We don't, we haven't, and we won't because, at our core, Democrats simply aren't as sleazy as Republicans. And it may be our eventual undoing.

McCain/Palin: Putting Japan First

"Drill, baby, drill!" "Sell out to the Japanese, baby, sell out to the Japanese!"

The Republicans have just spent a month going completely frothy over the need to drill for oil and natural gas in every backyard in America, claiming it'll lower gasoline prices at the pump.

But did you know that in the meantime, they've been preparing to secret all that natural gas out of the country and sell it to the Japanese?
Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) did:

               September 2, 2008

The Honorable Samuel W. Bodman
U.S. Department of Energy
1000 Independence Avenue, SW
Washington, DC 20585

Dear Secretary Bodman,

On June 3, 2008 and July 30, 2008 respectively, your Department issued and affirmed an order pursuant to Section 3 of the Natural Gas Act that will allow two major integrated oil companies – ConocoPhillips and Marathon Oil – to export 98.1 billion cubic feet of Alaskan natural gas to Japan and other Pacific Rim countries.  This order, which will allow the export of as much natural gas as is used by 1.4 million American families in a year, comes at a time when the President had demanded that the moratoria on oil and gas drilling along our environmentally-sensitive coastal areas be lifted and Americans are being warned that their winter heating bills are going to be dramatically higher.   The Administration is trying to have it both ways – arguing that we need to drill everywhere because we don’t have adequate energy supplies, while finding that we have so much energy that big oil companies can export it overseas and keep prices here at home higher than they would otherwise be.

Well, well, well. Energy prices going through the roof in the U.S., supposedly because we're not drilling enough, and the Republicans are selling what we are drilling out the back door! Wish I could say this was a surprise.

And sakes alive! Who'd have guessed it'd be Slick Sarah Palin and the Alaskans selling it off? We're all paying through the nose for our energy needs down here, Republicans are wetting themselves over the supposed need for more drilling, and Slick Sarah and her cronies are hawking their America's wares to overseas bidders. Which, not coincidentally, has the effect of hiking the prices Reg'lar Hockey MomsTM pay to, say, heat the seats in their new boondoggle hockey rinks, and, it seems, boosting the dividend checks paid directly to... Alaskan families like Sarah Palin's, who received $3200 per head this year. Wow! I haven't seen a scam this blatant since yesterday, when we found out Slick Sarah was charging Alaska taxpayers $60 a day to sleep in and munch those mooseburgers in her own kitchen.

So they're pumping up prices by selling off the gas they told you was ours to the Japanese, and then paying themselves bonuses when they do! (Plus extra for cheating you from home!)

Enough with the skimming already, you jerks!

What's the difference between a Hockey MomTM and Enron?

Yeah, it turns out that's lipstick too.

The Misery Indexes Haunt McSame (and predict his
defeat)

The press treatment of Sarah Palin remains markedly different than the way they treated Hillary Clinton. Not only is the national media’s anti-Clinton bias as strong as it ever was, but its habit of allowing Republicans to lie with impunity is also consistent with its record of the past 16 years. Of all the major [...]

Lying for the greater good.

The Republicans are spreading so many lies today it quite takes ones breath away, but, rather than be ashamed of this, they want us to know that they are rather pleased with how it's all going and are emphasising that this is part of a larger narrative:

John Feehery, a Republican strategist, said the campaign is entering a stage in which skirmishes over the facts are less important than the dominant themes that are forming voters' opinions of the candidates.

"The more the New York Times and The Washington Post go after Sarah Palin, the better off she is, because there's a bigger truth out there and the bigger truths are she's new, she's popular in Alaska and she is an insurgent," Feehery said. "As long as those are out there, these little facts don't really matter."

They are actually arrogant enough to state that facts don't matter. They really do think the American people are stupid. It underlines everything which they do.

They actually buy into the Bush regime mentality that reality is what they decide it is and they don't think anyone will see through them.

As Barack Obama said, "They must think you're stupid". And the truth is, they do.

Their entire campaign is built around lies, repeated often - even once they have been shown to be lies - because they believe the American people are simply too stupid to see what it is that they are doing. They actually hold average Americans in the deepest contempt.
From the moment Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin declared that she had opposed the infamous "Bridge to Nowhere," critics, the news media and nonpartisan fact checkers have called it a fabrication or, at best, a half-truth. But yesterday in Lebanon, Ohio, and again in Lancaster, Pa., she crossed that bridge again.
She crossed it because, as Feehery points out, "these little facts don't really matter" because he thinks - as does McCain and Palin - that the American people will believe anything that they are told. Because, basically, deep down, they believe the American people are stupid. And these charlatans have the gall to call Obama "elitist"?
