It's over

TIME's circulation is nearly 5 million. But TIME's impact goes far beyond its voluminous subscribers. In doctors' offices across America, every mom, dad, and kid is going to see Obama's smiling face and TIME magazine proclaiming him the victor. Most of America now thinks that Hillary lost and Obama won, and conventional wisdom setters like TIME only cement that notion even further. Why does this matter? Because of the SuperDelegates. Who wants to fall on their sword for Hillary AFTER everyone think - knows - she's lost? These are politicians. They have a choice between supporting the guy who may very well be our next president, or the lady who won't. At some point, opportunity overtakes loyalty, and even fear.

UPDATE: Rahm is now saying it's over too. This is rather huge. Not only did Rahm work for Bill in the White House, and on the campaign, but Rahm is also one of the most powerful Dems in the House. This will put added pressure on Democratic House members to side with Obama and put this thing to rest.

Guantanamo Wrecks Careers, Breeds Enemies

Sooner or later, American generals are going to realize that the way to damage your career is to be assigned to the military prison at Guantanamo. The latest general to find out is Major General Jay Hood, commander at Gitmo between 2004 - 2006, who just[...]

Hillary Clinton's Nixon Moment

Who will tell her it's time to go? Certainly not her husband, whose dynastic hopes will die hardest. Nor the limp leaders of Congressional Democrats, although Nancy Pelosi and Dianne Feinstein have been clearing their throats. Al Gore is too busy saving the planet and Howard Dean is just trying to hang onto his job as party chairman.

As Barack Obama now takes the lead in the slow dribble of superdelegates into his pledge pool, there is no one to do for Hillary Clinton what Republican leaders did for Richard Nixon in August 1974, when the Senate Minority Leader, House Minority Leader and Barry Goldwater, the former presidential candidate, went to the White House and told him that hanging on was hopeless. Nixon stepped down the next day.

But the Clintons are not good listeners and, as their desperation grows, she is openly relying on race, telling USA Today that "Obama's support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again...There's a pattern emerging here."

One of her non-fans, Peggy Noonan, writes in today's Wall Street Journal: "The question 'Who will tell her, who can make her go?' is really the question 'Who will save the Democratic Party in 2008?' It cannot be doubted at this point that real damage is being done to its standard-bearer and to all those who will be on the ticket with him."

But with friends like its weak-kneed nabobs, the Democratic Party doesn't need enemies. When will its leaders do for Hillary Clinton what Republicans did for Richard Nixon before he took his own party down in flames?

Science Policy Change or Cheap McCain Makeover

Tom Levenson writing at the Inverse Square Blog identifies several ways the Bush administration has effectively reversed progress in US science policy using official denialism, direct pressure on scientists and scientific organizations, and delegitimizing by nurturing public contempt for science. He then goes to analyze how science might fare under McCain and points out several dismal realities:

To deliver on his commitments on taxes, defense and fiscal responsibility, John McCain would have to eliminate all discretionary spending — including the few tens of billions spent on science R & D. ... McCain’s priorities are very clear — trillions for defense; trillions more for tax cuts.

I may a short, somewhat tangentially related post tomorrow on the Saturday Open Science Thread with some, err.., breaking bloggy news.

Veep speculation: Jim Webb

Moving on to the next new parlor game: Vice Presidential candidates.

A very solid case is made for Jim Webb by an actual presidential scholar. And, the idea of Clinton on the ticket is also dispensed with very convincingly.

Thoughts?

Hillary's Inconsistency.

I have consistently said that the votes cast in Florida and Michigan in January should be counted.
Hillary Clinton in a recent letter to Barack Obama.
"It's clear, this election they're having is not going to count for anything," Clinton said Thursday during an interview on New Hampshire Public Radio's call-in program, "The Exchange."
Hillary on October 11, 2007.
