What is Lauren Wolfe, Crystal Strait, David
Hardt, and Awais Khalil's problem

Obama has been overwhelmingly winning the youth vote. Just look at the numbers (at right). Obama's campaign has more:

"Obama has won an average of 62% of the youth vote compared to Clinton's 34%. He won the youth vote in every contest except for Arkansas and Massachusetts, where he lost by 1%. In this week's contests, Obama won the youth vote in North Carolina by 49% and in Indiana by 22%."
You'd think that it would, therefore, be a no-brainer that the two largest student youth groups, College Democrats of America and the Young Democrats of America, would endorse Democratic nominee Barack Obama. The issue isn't just academic. The leaders of CDA and YDA are SuperDelegates. They quite literally represent America's youth, and have a voice in choosing our nominee. But they're not doing a lot of representing. They seem to be hiding. Or something.

Let me explain something. The presidential train has left the station. Obama is on it. Hillary is not. Lauren Wolfe, Crystal Strait, David Hardt, and Awais Khalil can either be on the train, or left standing on the platform, all alone, watching the train as it leaves forever. And Lauren, Crystal, David and Awais, trust me when I say that it is way more fun to be on the train than to be hanging out with all the other people who missed it.

Let me explain something else. According to the Associated Press, Obama is now only four SuperDelegates behind Hillary (and new SuperDs are coming in every hour). Sure, Obama has already won the nomination, but still, once he has equal to or more SuperDs than Hillary, it will be an important milestone that everyone will be talking about. Now, how many of you are there? Oh that's right, four. Do the math, folks. Isn't it better to make history than be history?

CLINTON'S POPULISM.

I actually think Jon Chait goes too far here in declaring Clinton a conservative populist rather than a liberal populist. To put the two strains of thought in more specific terms, Chait is really talking about the difference between economic populism,[...]

Drip, drip, drip

Today the New York Times weighs in on Hillary Clinton continuing her campaign, saying that while she has the right to to do so:

...we believe just as strongly that Mrs. Clinton will be making a terrible mistake — for herself, her party and for the nation — if she continues to press her candidacy through negative campaigning with disturbing racial undertones. We believe it would also be a terrible mistake if she launches a fight over the disqualified delegations from Florida and Michigan.

The United States needs a clean break from eight catastrophic years of George W. Bush. And so far, Senator John McCain is shaping up as Bush the Sequel — neverending war in Iraq, tax cuts for the rich while the middle class struggles, courts packed with right-wing activists intent on undoing decades of progress in civil rights, civil liberties and other vital areas.  [...]

We endorsed Mrs. Clinton, and we know that she has a major contribution to make. But instead of discussing her strong ideas, Mrs. Clinton claimed in an interview with USA Today that she would be the better nominee because a recent poll showed that "Senator Obama’s support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again." She added: "There’s a pattern emerging here."

Yes, there is a pattern — a familiar and unpleasant one. It is up to Mrs. Clinton to change it if she hopes to have any shot at winning the nomination or preserving her integrity and her influence if she loses.

Meanwhile, Obama has picked up three more superdelegates and the endorsement of the American Federation of Government Employees union.

The Daily Muck

Television news networks have been remarkably quiet about the New York Times recent cover story detailing the practice of retired military analysts, many with ties to defense contractors, regurgitating Pentagon talking points on television news programs. Now Reps. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and John Dingell (D-MI) have sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission "urging an investigation of the Pentagon's propaganda program." DeLauro also sent letters to five networks questioning their motives. Only ABC and CNN have anwsered thus far. (New York Times and Politico)

David Mason's name has been withdrawn by President Bush as a Federal Election Commission nominee. Some charge the move was made to fix John McCain's problems with the FEC. But McCain's camp respond that such controversy is "manufactured". Mason has voiced a negative opinion of allowing McCain to back out of a primary election public funding program. (Politico)

Longtime military vet Maj. Gen. Jay W. Hood was penciled in as the next senior American officer in Pakistan. But the military discreetly canceled his nomination once Pakistani news media picked up on Hood's former post: commander of the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay. (New York Times)

Former Alaska state Rep. Vic Kohring was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in jail for accepting bribes to advocate a natural gas pipeline. Kohring accepted the bribes from VECO Corp. CEO Bill Allen. (Associated Press)

A federal judge will review a legal opinion of the Bush administration associated with detainee interrogation tactics that has been hidden from the public. The memo for review is from Aug. 2002; it accompanied a broader document on torture from the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel. (Washington Post)

The Senate Intelligence Committee's new report on intelligence on Iraq will contain details on contacts between the Pentagon and Iranian informants kept hidden from the CIA. (Newsweek)

Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) and his ties to the Alabama real estate market have drawn criticism since Shelby has done more to change housing finance laws than anyone else in Congress. (New York Times)

Alaska democratic congressional candidate Jake Metcalfe dropped his campaign run Wednesday following an onslaught of Web sites linked to Metcalfe's political adviser attacked fellow candidate Ethan Berkowitz. Metcalfe took responsibility for the actions, yet said he did not order or ask anyone to create the site. (Anchorage Daily News)

MS-01: Two ways YOU can help Travis Childers

Here at Cotton Mouth we have devoted a large chunk of our time to doing whatever we can to help our friend Travis Childers get to Washington. The race is tight, and the polls open Tuesday. That means at 7:00AM on Saturday we will be in the 72 hour window preceding the election. What can you do to help Travis Childers? You can drive up to north Mississippi and help the GOTV effort. If that is out of the question, or just more than you up to doing, we have two other ways to help.

1. Donate to Travis before tomorrow. The Childers campaign said they would be able to use every dollar contributed up until 72 hours before the election. This is your last chance to make a difference before next Tuesday.

2. Phonebank for Travis using this virtual phonebanking center set up by the DCCC. One of our readers gave himself hand cramps from dialing the phone a couple of weeks ago in a phonebanking effort for Travis. Phonebanking is an easy way to help the GOTV effort. If you are a regular blogger, you are probably in your Mom's basement in your pajamas, so don't worry you won't have to change. If you are little nervous about calling strangers, read this diary from Daily Kos - 5 MYTHS about phonebanking.
