PA-Sen: Specter still in front

Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter remains in front of Congressman Joe Sestak, 51-36. The race seems to have stabilized since October, and Sestak has just over 3 months to close the gap.

Now THAT is what I'm talking about. These are the kind of things that show the American people the difference between having Democrats in power and Republicans in power.

C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Patty Griffin

All I can really say about Patty Griffin's new album, Downtown Church, is: Wow, what a knockout.

It was all recorded at the Nashville Downtown Presbyterian Church, and the lineup of contributing musicians is amazing and impressive: Besides Emmylou Harris, there's Buddy Miller (who also produced), Shawn Colvin, the great Gospel singer Regina McCrary, and Mike Farris.

"Little Fire" is fairly representative: Like the album, it's a nonstop treat for people who love heartfelt roots music. It ranges from rockabilly to folk to Gospel in its range, but what's most striking is the purity of its sound.

I was tipped to this album earlier this summer when Griffin, Harris, Miller and Colvin toured together for a series of intimate concerts, including the one I saw at Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo. It was a great show, and it featured several of the cuts on this record. And as you can see, they all seemed to genuinely enjoy playing together.

Tuesday Stuff

Hey teabaggers! You want something to protest for real? Check out the story of Kyler Van Nocker, told to us by K.O. from today's Philadelphia Daily News (here)...

...and oh yeah, it looks like the Brits have the guts to at least investigate the crimes of Dubya and Deadeye Dick on Iraq, as opposed to we utterly cowed, corporate-media-spoon-fed Americans (and making this even more preposterous - what asshats)...

..."Worst Persons" (Repug U.S. House Rep Marsha Blackburn returns to suggest privatizing Social Security...uh, and tell me one more time how long it took the Dow to climb back up to 10,000; the family of Sen. Jim Inhofe demonstrates that climate crisis denial runs in the family - utter fools; but David Steiner of the New York State Department of Education gets the "Worst" citation for refusing to accept the makeup test scores of a student who missed the regularly scheduled Regents exam...Steiner didn't think her excuse was acceptable - it turns out, though, that the student was in a seven-hour meeting the day of the exam at the Central Homeless Family Intake Center trying to keep her family from losing their home...just the kind of diligent, committed individual we should kick right in the shins while we lecture them about making bad life choices, right? What country am I living in again?)...

Farms in China even worse than factories

It shouldn't be much of a surprise after all of the scary problems related to food products that were exported abroad. Even in the US, farm runoff is a terrible problem. Anyone who lives near the Chesapeake is familiar with the chemical runoff problems including fewer fish and higher levels of cancer in the area. Claims that the Chinese pollution is near its peak is about as believable as the claims that the government is not triggering an economic bubble. The Guardian:

Farmers' fields are a bigger source of water contamination in China than factory effluent, the Chinese government revealed today in its first census on pollution.

Senior officials said the disclosure, after a two-year study involving 570,000 people, would require a partial realignment of environmental policy from smoke stacks to chicken coops, cow sheds and fruit orchards.

Despite the sharp upward revision of figures on rural contamination, the government suggested the country's pollution problem may be close to - or even past - a peak. That claim is likely to prompt scepticism among environmental groups.
