Immigration backfires on right-wing in Virginia.

“Democrats wrested control of the Senate from the Republicans” in yesterday’s Virginia legislative elections. The vote served as a repudiation of conservatives who ran on a hard-right immigration crackdown agenda. Kos writes the “demonization of scary brown people has been a flop.” Raising Kaine adds:

Let this be a wake-up call to progressives everywhere — the immigration issue is nothing to be feared. Reasonable immigration reform that includes strong border security without turning our backs on those that already live among us is not only the right thing to do, it’s the politically smart thing to do as well.

That National Review’s Jim Geraghty concedes that immigration is proving not to be the “silver bullet” that right-wing conservatives had hoped.

The netroots fundraiser for Donna Edwards raised over $101K from nearly 2300 online donors. Good job, everyone! And in more great news, the League of Conservation Voters has endorsed Edwards.

I put a link to one Joss Whedon post on the WGA strike in an earlier post, but this extended comment from him is also a wonderful discussion of the issues involved and has some typically witty Whedon writing about being on the picket line.

Another WGA link that didn't make it into my post: Obama, Clinton, and Edwards have all issued strong statements in support of the writers.

But what he's really proposing is that teachers be treated far worse than the lumpen widgeters -- that the teachers be treated as at-will serfs while the illiterate blue-collar types enjoy the benefits of strength through unionization.

Public service announcement: If you know anyone who claims to have been nominated for a Pulitzer prize (pronounced "PULL it sir," by the way), unless they were one of like 2 nominated finalists, they're full of crap. There's no such thing as a "nominee." Anyone can enter anything to be considered for a Pulitzer. People who claim to have been nominated are just trying to make themselves sound important.
