A Letter to Senator John Edwards
March 7, 2007
Dear Senator Edwards:
I understand that in August you may be taking part in a presidential candidates? forum sponsored by YearlyKos and DailyKos, groups whose leader, Markos Moulitsas, is an atheist and where 65% of members are either atheists or agnostics. If you take part in the forum, I would like to know how you will distinguish your views, if at all, from those of the anti-Christian and/or atheist/agnostic majority sponsoring the forum?
At DailyKos, ?Lepanto,? a well known DailyKos participant, says, ?Politicians who talk about "their faith" "give me the shits?.
Meanwhile, ?Mikey? at DailyKos says, ?When Sen. Obama tells us to be nicer to evangelicals, it rings hollow. . . . It stings when the country is dominated by Christian/Paulite fundamentalism to have our officials backing the other side.?
Do you agree with the statement of DailyKos? Gracchus that, ?I really don't see a way of restoring political discourse to a balanced position in the U.S. without squeezing at least some of the God out of it??
Do you agree with DailyKos' Ormond Otvos US Supreme Court advocacy that the words "under God" should be removed from the United States' Pledge of Allegiance?
Senator Edwards, do you agree with Lepanto, Mikey and Gracchus' statements at DailyKos and Mr. Otvos advocacy at the US Supreme Court? If not, what will you do to publicly distinguish your views from theirs?
Will you take part in the YearlyKos candidates? forum, sponsored by a group dominated by atheists/agnostics who say that talk about faith ?gives me the shits??
If you will take part in atheist/agnostic group?s candidate debate, how will you modify your positions to reflect the atheist/agnostics? demands for ?squeezing at least some of the God out of? public discourse?
I eagerly await your responses to these pressing questions about the role of religion in American life and American institutions.
Thank you for your attention.
Sincerely,
Francis L. Holland

Add to myYahoo!Last month, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) notably warned of a “constitutional crisis” if Congress tried to influence the President’s conduct of the war in Iraq:This non-binding measure before us is a first step toward a constitutional crisis that we can and must avoid. … Congress has been given constitutional responsibilities. But the micro-management of war [...]

Add to myYahoo!Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM) has “hired a top defense attorney to handle the pending ethics investigation into allegations that he pressured a federal prosecutor to bring indictments against New Mexico Democrats on the eve of the 2006 elections.” His choice: “Lee Blalack, who recently represented former congressman Randy ‘Duke’ Cunningham (R-CA), who is now serving [...]

Add to myYahoo!Al Jazeera English:A US Army medic who refused to return to Iraq with his unit has been found guilty and sentenced to eight months in jail for desertion - far short of the maximum seven-year sentence. A US military court also ruled that Agustin Aguayo, who has already spent 161 days in prison, should forfeit [...]

Add to myYahoo!I agree that the Nevada Fox-sponsored debate for Dem Presidential candidates was a terrible idea and it's fine to slam the local union leaders for supporting it. But I hate to the core when folks like Kos use the term "local union bosses", as if elected union leaders are the same as management bosses who get to tell their workers what to do.
It's one of the most persistent rightwing frames, creating an equivalence between union representatives of working people and those who boss them around without democratic accountability. Criticizing union leaders is fine and even needed, but using rightwing frames like the phrase "union bosses" should be avoided.

Add to myYahoo! It's a lucky trick that my utter bafflement over why this administration does not sink $50 million into locking down loose nuclear materials overwhelms the total terror I'd otherwise submit to: On September 9, 2004, a division of Halliburton[...]

Add to myYahoo! You know, if you look at a map, Indiana is pretty close to being in the middle of the U.S. Obviously, there's something wrong in the heartland.First you have Dan Burton blowing off votes on Iraq and other headlining issues ... so that he won't miss celebrity pro-am golf tournaments. ...
