When you vote with the failed policies of George W. Bush 95% of the time, even some of your most ardent supporters have a hard time telling you apart:
In a slip of the lip echoing a misstatement 20 years ago, Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey cast Tennessee's 55 votes at the Republican National Convention for "George S. McCain."
Ramsey, chairman of the delegation, said Friday that he was concentrating on the first part of his floor statement, wherein he recalled that George Bush in 2000 defeated Democrat Al Gore Jr. in Tennessee, then lapsed into an auctioneer's chant.
An auctioneer by profession, Ramsey spoke in a sing-song voice as if bidding up the number of votes to be cast for Tennessee for John McCain. At the end, he declared, "Tennessee casts 55 votes for George S. McCain."
He might was well have said George Bush. A vote for John McCain is a vote for George W Bush and all the miserable GOP policies of mass destruction (see: Iraq, the economy, Gulf coast, corruption, cronies).

Add to myYahoo! For the first few days of the DNC I wondered if I should have bothered to go. Not that it wasn't interesting, but FDL had plenty of people there who know US politics better than I do, and the entire thing was very antiseptic, with little in the way of[...]

Add to myYahoo!Three of four candidates on the presidential tickets will be on the Sunday morning talk shows tomorrow, but guess who's missing?
Sarah Palin, the self-proclaimed pit bull, is out on the trail bashing both Barack Obama and Joe Biden, but her handlers have apparently decided she is not ready for prime time, except in situations where the nosy media can't ask questions.
They brought her out today at an airport rally for thousands in Colorado Springs, waving American flags and chanting ?Sarah Palin, Sarah Palin." She told them that Joe Biden "can claim many chairmanships across many, many years in Washington, and certainly many friends in the Washington establishment. But even those admirers would not be able to call him an agent of change."
Perhaps the change that Republicans are planning to offer voters this year is a vice-presidential candidate who will lip-synch her way through the campaign with scripted sound bites but seldom make herself available for reporters' questions about her history or positions on issues.
It might be a relief from Dick Cheney, who has always had too many opinions, but is the alternative a performer in a ventriloquist's act?

Add to myYahoo! In an interview with CBS’ Katie Couric Wednesday, Cindy McCain seemed surprised to learn that her husband John wants to see Roe v. Wade overturned. But as it turns out, the surprises hardly end there for the McCains when it comes to abortion and the 2008 Republican platform. By rejecting John McCain’s limited proposed [...]

Add to myYahoo!Rasmussen: There was a +5 swing for Obama last week and a +2 for McCain this week if one compares day-to-day-to-day. The maximum Obama Rasmussen bounce wasn't seen until four days later (this Tuesday).
Numbers are Sat (Fri) (Thurs) (Wed). Compare last week, the Saturday after the Dem convention.
Rep Convention
Obama 49 (48) (50) (50)
McCain 46 (46) (45) (45)
Dem Convention
Obama 49 (49) (47) (46)
McCain 45 (45) (47) (47)
Gallup: By last Saturday, Obama was holding up +7 from the 45-44 the Tues prior. This week, McCain is so far +4 from the Wed prior. The maximum Gallup for Obama was 5 days later (this Wed).
Rep Convention
Obama 47 (48) (49) (49)
McCain 45 (44) (42) (43)
Dem Convention
Obama 49 (49) (48) (45)
McCain 41 (41) (42) (44)
All polling now includes at least two days of both the Sarah Palin speech and one day of the John McCain snoozer. Although relatively meaningless, at this point Obama is doing three bounce points better than McCain (and so far that's the story of this election.) In that sense, virtually no polls have shown Sarah Palin to be a game changer in how people plan to vote, consistent with traditional VP picks. They can hurt, but don't tend to help. In Palin's case, this seems to be a reaction sparking an equal reaction.
Nate Silver at fivethirtyeight.com guesses that McCain will be tied or ahead by tomorrow. That's more a reaction to the McCain speech than the Palin speech.
However, it is way too early to make final judgment about what it means. Bounces are called bounces because they don't always last. The readiness question still needs to be addressed, Palin is still being vetted by the media (and the tabloids – inevitable because McCain did such a poor job), the economy matters, and although I don't see any data on it, I suspect voters over 50 don't know what the heck to make of any of the characters, and will be slow to decide [i.e., wanting to take their time].
