From today's St. Petersburg Times editorial: McCain's speech failed to deliver on change

[H]is agenda promises only more of the same: tax cuts for the wealthy that the nation cannot afford, an aggressive foreign policy that cannot be sustained and an energy policy short on vision and long on oil drilling that would threaten Florida and provide no near-term relief.

Holding that losing hand, Republicans dealt themselves new cards from a very old deck. Instead of emphasizing experience, the Arizona senator who has been in Washington for more than 25 years tried to hijack Democrat Barack Obama's pitch for change. But there was no innovative thinking in his laundry list of the usual conservative proposals, from school choice to trickle-down economics to market-based health care changes that will not make medical treatment more available or affordable.

There was no clear assessment of America's challenges abroad in the routine scare tactics about the dangers of terrorism and Russia's aggressiveness.

And the convention turned back to the dated, tired GOP playbook of attacking abortion rights, the media, intellectuals, government, activist judges and the Washington elite.

Nixon's Ghost Howls In Minnesota

People react to fear, not love; they don't teach that in Sunday School, but it's true.

With the Republican party rejuvenated by a wonderful Karl Rove tactic designed to pander to disillusioned Hillary Rodham-Clinton supporters by putting Sarah 'Barracuda' Palin on the ticket along with the oldest major party candidate in history the party has essentially relaunched the old brand in a new package. The shrillness of this weeks convention in the thuggish police state of Minneapolis has been a massive success in not only shoving aside the toxic George W. Bush but in rolling out the 'New Reagan' (actually a souped up version of Margaret Thatcher) in Mrs. Palin, the gun-totin', ass-whuppin, liberal bashing hockey mom from the teeming Metropolis of Wasilla, Alaska. Despite the shovels of bloody red meat fed directly to the ravenous haters of the GOP base the attacks coming from the speakers at the Exel Energy Center have a very familiar sound to them which is because it is as though the ghost of Richard M. Nixon has paid a visit to the Twin Cities to resurrect the duplicitous lies that are at the root of the extreme right's rise to national power and prominence with their subversion of the press, their multi-million dollar network of think tanks, payroll pundits, union busting goon squads and a snake mean army of shock troops raging against abortion, Darwin and preaching the fire and brimstone of the new and improved weaponized version of Jesus Christ.  

Shrill Sarah in Mid-Seig Heil

The 2008 Republican National Convention was a veritable greatest hits tour for Republican fascism. Mr. 9/11 Rudy Giuliani lisped on about fear and dread and how this country, the place now called The Homeland needed a mighty warrior at the helm. Sarah Barracuda brought down the house with one of the shrillest diatribes against the so-called 'elite' and the media unleashed in recent history. Senator Joseph Lieberman collected the final installment on his thirty pieces of silver for an influential foreign policy/warmongering spot in the McCain administration.

Good ole Fred Dalton Thompson managed to get up enough gumption for a short speech bashing the elite menace of liberalism, echoing McCain economic advisor Phil Gramm's "a nation of whiners" in playing down the looming economic catastrophe and invoked McCain's 'heroic' military service as though he was still commanding that aircraft carrier in The Hunt For Red October. But the common thread was the bizarre attacks by a party that serves as the Praetorian Guard for the financial elite, the oligarchs and the trust fund babies raging against the phantom menace of liberal elitism....it was vintage Nixon.

With the GOP, it is always about the politics of resentment, blame and the pimping of persecution to suckers and chuckleheads who spend more time looking for scapegoats for the problems largely laid at their doorsteps by the Republican party itself. Paul Krugman over at the damned librul New York Times gets right at it in today's column entitled The Resentment Strategy:

What's the source of all that anger?

Some of it, of course, is driven by cultural and religious conflict: fundamentalist Christians are sincerely dismayed by Roe v. Wade and evolution in the curriculum. What struck me as I watched the convention speeches, however, is how much of the anger on the right is based not on the claim that Democrats have done bad things, but on the perception - generally based on no evidence whatsoever - that Democrats look down their noses at regular people.

Thus Mr. Giuliani asserted that Wasilla, Alaska, isn't "flashy enough" for Mr. Obama, who never said any such thing. And Ms. Palin asserted that Democrats "look down" on small-town mayors - again, without any evidence.

What the G.O.P. is selling, in other words, is the pure politics of resentment; you're supposed to vote Republican to stick it to an elite that thinks it's better than you. Or to put it another way, the G.O.P. is still the party of Nixon.

Richard M. Nixon's festering contempt for a nonexistent 'elite' fueled his political career from his red-baiting rise, through his service as Ike's V.P., his subsequent fall to John F. Kennedy, his bitter diatribe in the aftermath of losing the California governor's election in 1962, which he blamed on the media hence the infamous line "You won't have Nixon to kick around anymore", to his phoenix like rise from the ashes of the 1960's social problems during which he exploited race riots, bashed hippies and scared the bejesus out of white picket fence America. It was Nixon who formulated the Southern Strategy that exploited red state resentment over civil rights and allowed the GOP to foment racism, something that the next two months will have no shortage of as the party of American white supremacy will go after Barack Obama with hammer and tong.

Nixon's legacy has been a lasting one and one that is too long for me to further get into for the sake of this post. I would recommend a book though because it is a look into the darkest depths of the divisive politics that have so poisoned the discourse, pitted friends and familes against each other, championed the redistribution of wealth upward, largely as a result of Ronald Reagan's undeclared war on the middle class which Nixon's policies laid the groundwork for and has trapped America in some sort of historical stasis that bring to mind George Santayana's warming that "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it". The book that I refer to is Rick Perlstein's brilliant Nixonland(subtitled: The rise of a president and the fracturing of America) and it is an important read if you are to truly understand 2008 America and the death of the mythical American Dream which as George Carlin so truthfully pegged it you have to be asleep to believe it. Newsweek's Evan Thomas provides a review of Nixonland in his piece Divide and Conquer.

Nixon and the Looter Capitalist Manifesto

Judge Lewis F. Powell Jr. was a Nixon appointee to the Supreme Court and can be looked at in a historical perspective as the architect of the right wing infrastructure and father of the think tanks. Powell may not have fired the first shot in the class war that has gutted the middle class, redistributed wealth upwards and turned the mythical American dream into a nightmare of Darwinist debt slavery but his at the time secret 1971 memo to the Chamber of Commerce laid the groundwork for the looting spree and the rapacious piranha capitalism that was to come.The Powell Memorandum was the manifesto of a malignant and cruel form of monopolist 'fuck you' capitalism that has now with the culmination of the looting spree and selling off of America for pennies on the dollar to sovereign wealth funds is beginning to feed off of itself kind of like that dude in the old Stephen King story Survivor Type in which a man stranded on a deserted island has to start hacking off pieces of his own body to eat in order to stay alive, or like a python consuming it's own tail. I am going excerpt a few pieces of this very important historical battle plan against the working class here and there through this posting but you need to read the whole thing at the links that I have provided to get a real grasp of it's raw monstrous magnitude.

The Powell Memorandum minced no words in laying out the threat to the abilities of huge corporations to anally rape the public with their toxic products and at one point essentially identified then consumer advocate Ralph Nader as public enemy number one (kind of like the uninformed did when he became a scapegoat for providing cover for Bush to steal the 2000 election in Florida but that is a story for another time). Notice the identification of the media and the college campuses as enemies of the system, in this document lay the seeds of the undeclared war against the middle class that has brought us to the brink of economic apocalypse brought on by a percolating deterioration of global stock markets desperately being shored up by central banks and the Plunge Protection Team that could blow at any time:

Dimensions of the Attack:

No thoughtful person can question that the American economic system is under broad attack. This varies in scope, intensity, in the techniques employed, and in the level of visibility.

There always have been some who opposed the American system, and preferred socialism or some form of statism (communism or fascism). Also, there always have been critics of the system, whose criticism has been wholesome and constructive so long as the objective was to improve rather than to subvert or destroy.

But what now concerns us is quite new in the history of America. We are not dealing with sporadic or isolated attacks from a relatively few extremists or even from the minority socialist cadre. Rather, the assault on the enterprise system is broadly based and consistently pursued. It is gaining momentum and converts.

Sources of the Attack:

The sources are varied and diffused. They include, not unexpectedly, the Communists, New Leftists and other revolutionaries who would destroy the entire system, both political and economic. These extremists of the left are far more numerous, better financed, and increasingly are more welcomed and encouraged by other elements of society, than ever before in our history. But they remain a small minority, and are not yet the principal cause for concern.

The most disquieting voices joining the chorus of criticism come from perfectly respectable elements of society: from the college campus, the pulpit, the media, the intellectual and literary journals, the arts and sciences, and from politicians. In most of these groups the movement against the system is participated in only by minorities. Yet, these often are the most articulate, the most vocal, the most prolific in their writing and speaking.

Moreover, much of the media-for varying motives and in varying degrees-either voluntarily accords unique publicity to these "attackers," or at least allows them to exploit the media for their purposes. This is especially true of television, which now plays such a predominant role in shaping the thinking, attitudes and emotions of our people.

One of the bewildering paradoxes of our time is the extent to which the enterprise system tolerates, if not participates in, its own destruction.

The campuses from which much of the criticism emanates are supported by (i) tax funds generated largely from American business, and (ii) contributions from capital funds controlled or generated by American business. The boards of trustees of our universities overwhelmingly are composed of men and women who are leaders in the system.

Most of the media, including the national TV systems, are owned and theoretically controlled by corporations which depend upon profits, and the enterprise system to survive.

The Powell Memorandum goes on to lay the specific groundwork for an agressive, extremely well funded and highly organized counterattack that would shift the discourse through the creation of the think tank infrastructure that would grow to the point where it could saturate the media with pro-corporate propaganda, bully and intimidate critics, cultivate activists, pack the courts and do everything possible to stack the deck in favor of those to whom avarice is a religious dogma. A good resource for some of this is former GOP operative (now with the great watchdog Media Matters) David Brock's excellent book The Republican Noise Machine which provides much detail on the rise of the neofascist corporate state that used the Republican party as a tool for domination and the furthering of corporatist interests. There is also a long essay by Steve Kangas out there which addresses the think tanks and potential CIA involvement that I would recommend checking out called The Origins Of The Overclass that fully examines the sordid history of the CIA which is nothing more than Wall Steet's Gestapo having risen out of that bastion of the elite Yale University but that is something I will take a look at at some future point in this series. The parts that I am going excerpt briefly below about the quashing of campus freedoms, the review of textbooks and the intimidation tactics subtly proposed are something straight out of Nazi Germany and the plan to saturate the media with propaganda are on a level with Herr Goebbels himself:

Powell On Higher Education:

The Campus

The assault on the enterprise system was not mounted in a few months. It has gradually evolved over the past two decades, barely perceptible in its origins and benefiting (sic) from a gradualism that provoked little awareness much less any real reaction.

Although origins, sources and causes are complex and interrelated, and obviously difficult to identify without careful qualification, there is reason to believe that the campus is the single most dynamic source. The social science faculties usually include members who are unsympathetic to the enterprise system.

What Can Be Done About the Campus

The ultimate responsibility for intellectual integrity on the campus must remain on the administrations and faculties of our colleges and universities. But organizations such as the Chamber can assist and activate constructive change in many ways, including the following:

Staff of Scholars

The Chamber should consider establishing a staff of highly qualified scholars in the social sciences who do believe in the system. It should include several of national reputation whose authorship would be widely respected -- even when disagreed with.

Staff of Speakers

There also should be a staff of speakers of the highest competency. These might include the scholars, and certainly those who speak for the Chamber would have to articulate the product of the scholars. (Like Ann Coulter or David Horowitz perhaps?)

Speaker's Bureau

In addition to full-time staff personnel, the Chamber should have a Speaker's Bureau which should include the ablest and most effective advocates from the top echelons of American business.

Evaluation of Textbooks

The staff of scholars (or preferably a panel of independent scholars) should evaluate social science textbooks, especially in economics, political science and sociology. This should be a continuing program.

The objective of such evaluation should be oriented toward restoring the balance essential to genuine academic freedom. This would include assurance of fair and factual treatment of our system of government and our enterprise system, its accomplishments, its basic relationship to individual rights and freedoms, and comparisons with the systems of socialism, fascism and communism. Most of the existing textbooks have some sort of comparisons, but many are superficial, biased and unfair.

We have seen the civil rights movement insist on re-writing many of the textbooks in our universities and schools. The labor unions likewise insist that textbooks be fair to the viewpoints of organized labor. Other interested citizens groups have not hesitated to review, analyze and criticize textbooks and teaching materials. In a democratic society, this can be a constructive process and should be regarded as an aid to genuine academic freedom and not as an intrusion upon it.

If the authors, publishers and users of textbooks know that they will be subjected -- honestly, fairly and thoroughly -- to review and critique by eminent scholars who believe in the American system, a return to a more rational balance can be expected.

Equal Time on the Campus

The Chamber should insist upon equal time on the college speaking circuit. The FBI publishes each year a list of speeches made on college campuses by avowed Communists. The number in 1970 exceeded 100. There were, of course, many hundreds of appearances by leftists and ultra liberals who urge the types of viewpoints indicated earlier in this memorandum. There was no corresponding representation of American business, or indeed by individuals or organizations who appeared in support of the American system of government and business.

Powell On The Manipulation of Media

Television

The national television networks should be monitored in the same way that textbooks should be kept under constant surveillance. This applies not merely to so-called educational programs (such as "Selling of the Pentagon"), but to the daily "news analysis" which so often includes the most insidious type of criticism of the enterprise system.12 Whether this criticism results from hostility or economic ignorance, the result is the gradual erosion of confidence in "business" and free enterprise.

This monitoring, to be effective, would require constant examination of the texts of adequate samples of programs. Complaints -- to the media and to the Federal Communications Commission -- should be made promptly and strongly when programs are unfair or inaccurate.

Equal time should be demanded when appropriate.

Effort should be made to see that the forum-type programs (the Today Show, Meet the Press, etc.) afford at least as much opportunity for supporters of the American system to participate as these programs do for those who attack it.

Other Media

Radio and the press are also important, and every available means should be employed to challenge and refute unfair attacks, as well as to present the affirmative case through these media.

The Scholarly Journals

It is especially important for the Chamber's "faculty of scholars" to publish. One of the keys to the success of the liberal and leftist faculty members has been their passion for "publication" and "lecturing." A similar passion must exist among the Chamber's scholars. Incentives might be devised to induce more "publishing" by independent scholars who do believe in the system.

There should be a fairly steady flow of scholarly articles presented to a broad spectrum of magazines and periodicals -- ranging from the popular magazines (Life, Look, Reader's Digest, etc.) to the more intellectual ones (Atlantic, Harper's, Saturday Review, New York, etc.)13 and to the various professional journals.

Books, Paperbacks and Pamphlets

The news stands -- at airports, drugstores, and elsewhere -- are filled with paperbacks and pamphlets advocating everything from revolution to erotic free love. One finds almost no attractive, well-written paperbacks or pamphlets on "our side." It will be difficult to compete with an Eldridge Cleaver or even a Charles Reich for reader attention, but unless the effort is made -- on a large enough scale and with appropriate imagination to assure some success -- this opportunity for educating the public will be irretrievably lost.

Paid Advertisements

Business pays hundreds of millions of dollars to the media for advertisements. Most of this supports specific products; much of it supports institutional image making; and some fraction of it does support the system. But the latter has been more or less tangential, and rarely part of a sustained, major effort to inform and enlighten the American people. If American business devoted only 10% of its total annual advertising budget to this overall purpose, it would be a statesman-like
expenditure.

And Powell Sums It Up.....

More Aggressive Attitude

Business interests -- especially big business and their national trade organizations -- have tried to maintain low profiles, especially with respect to political action. As suggested in the Wall Street Journal article, it has been fairly characteristic of the average business executive to be tolerant -- at least in public -- of those who attack his corporation and the system. Very few businessmen or business organizations respond in kind. There has been a disposition to appease; to regard the opposition as willing to compromise, or as likely to fade away in due time.

Business has shunted confrontation politics. Business, quite understandably, has been repelled by the multiplicity of non-negotiable "demands" made constantly by self-interest groups of all kinds.

While neither responsible business interests, nor the United States Chamber of Commerce, would engage in the irresponsible tactics of some pressure groups, it is essential that spokesmen for the enterprise system -- at all levels and at every opportunity -- be far more aggressive than in the past.

There should be no hesitation to attack the Naders, the Marcuses and others who openly seek destruction of the system. There should not be the slightest hesitation to press vigorously in all political arenas for support of the enterprise system. Nor should there be reluctance to penalize politically those who oppose it.

Lessons can be learned from organized labor in this respect. The head of the AFL-CIO may not appeal to businessmen as the most endearing or public-minded of citizens. Yet, over many years the heads of national labor organizations have done what they were paid to do very effectively. They may not have been beloved, but they have been respected -- where it counts the most -- by politicians, on the campus, and among the media.

It is time for American business -- which has demonstrated the greatest capacity in all history to produce and to influence consumer decisions -- to apply their great talents vigorously to the preservation of the system itself.

With the economy now on the brink of the abyss, the Republican hydra regenerated in the aftermath of the Minneapolis screechfest with a new public face in the former beauty queen Palin and a media brutally brought to heel in a mere matter of days it's starting to look pretty dark regarding the future of the regular folks in The Homeland. The era of Bush is over, the new and improved Republican party will be one devoted to the ideals of Nixon, that much is apparent in the early hours after the convention. As the late great Hunter S. Thompson once so eloquently put it on the perfect worldview of Nixon and Republicans:

It involved the systematic destruction of everything this country claims to stand for except the rights of the rich to put saddles on the backs of the poor and use public funds to build jails for anybody who complained about it.

Take a look around, isn't that the damning statement of what this country is really all about in 2008 under Republican fascist rule?

The huge influence of Powell's manifesto on big business cannot be underestimated and it was implemented with maximum efficiency to change the nature of the discourse in America and to set the tone for the pollution of the media, the ongoing harassment of college professors by hate mongering clowns like David Horowitz and calculating monsters like Lynne Cheney and Joseph Lieberman and their front groups.

The demonizing of the non-existent "liberal media" and the ludicrous concept of offering equal time to public relations hacks to rebut the truth is also a result of Powell's blueprint. I would strongly recommend not only reading the actual document in it's entirety but in getting it out to as many people as possible. With the system currently in it's death throes it is of the utmost of importance to ensure that people know the truth about the forces that have ruined their lives. More importantly when the wheels do finally come off and the Wall Street house of cards collapses the same corporatists will be looking for scapegoats and with thugs like Rush Limbaugh (the latter day Father Coughlin) and his ilk there will be no shortage of those who will be blamed for a failed system built on greed and outright thievery.

May we live to see the day when the looter capitalism of Powell and his ilk will soon be taking it's rightful place on history's scrapheap of failed ideologies right alongside the equally oppressive and anti-human system of totalitarian communism.

But it is truly hard to see when that may happen as the media swoon, the Republican base gets the pure black tar heroin jolt of their new champion Sarah Palin and the Democrats get ready to go into their traditional supine position lest they upset their high rolling Wall Street campaign contributors.

In the end, it is always the people who get screwed and when you are fighting against an entrenched system fueled by hatred, fear and loathing of an imagined elite the only change that can be expected by any resonable person is none at all.

We hate linking to the cult-run Republican newspaper here in town. But when even they are writing articles implying that Sarah Palin is a hypocrite for pretending she's against earmarks (she's not against them, and in fact she supported the Bridge to Nowhere, even though now she lies about it) - when she's not - well, let's just say that McCain is going to have a hard time accusing the Washington Times of liberal bias.

I?ve got a whole bunch of stuff to get to courtesy of Michael Morrill of Keystone Progress, so let?s begin, shall we?

McCain Used Record Of Job Layoffs To Attack Romney. CBS News reported that McCain attacked Romney's record and rhetoric that private-sector experience enhances his ability to create jobs: "McCain added by criticizing Romney's private sector experience, which Romney has used as his platform for being able to bring America's economy back. 'As the head of his investment, quote, company. He presided over the acquisition of companies that immediately laid off thousands of workers.'" [CBS, 1/28/08]

(McBush Adviser Carly) Fiorina Laid Off Nearly 18,000 HP Workers During "Restructuring." According to the Omaha-World Herald, "Hewlett-Packard, based in Palo Alto, Calif., had a $ 903 million loss on revenue of $56.6 billion for its fiscal year that ended last Oct 31. According to a summary by Hoover's Inc., an Austin, Texas, provider of business information, Hewlett-Packard has undergone extensive restructuring under Chief Executive Officer Carly Fiorina. The company announced earlier this year that it planned to cut 17,900 people by October because of a weak economy and its merger with Compaq." [Omaha-World Herald 9/29/03]

Fiorina Suggests Her Biggest Mistake Was Not Firing More People More Quickly. In 2005, Fortune magazine reported that "Fiorina does not agree, naturally, that there's been a brain drain (at HP). In fact, she believes that one lesson she's learned while running HP is that she should have moved more quickly in ejecting certain people. Smartened up now, she says, "I would have done them all faster. Every person that I've asked to leave, whether it's been clear publicly or not, I would have done faster." [Fortune, 2/7/05]

According to the Center for American Progress Action Fund, McBush's corporate tax cuts would give:

$3.8 billion in tax breaks to the 5 biggest oil companies [CAPAF , 4/15/08]

$1.9 billion in tax breaks to the 10 biggest health insurers [CAPAF , 4/15/08]

More than $500 million to the companies where his economic advisors serve or served as CEOs [CAPAF, 4/15/08]

And maybe this is why Senator McBush wants to talk Terra! Terra! Terra! instead of what matters most?

McCain On Outsourcing: "I Don't Care How Many Of Them You Outsource." Responding to a question about the economy during an appearance on MSNBC's Hardball, McCain said, "If we start seeing what a lot of us expect, and that is a strong economy cannot go forever without picking up jobs. I don't care how many of them you outsource, then I think the president is going to be helped by that." [MSNBC, "Hardball," 2/25/04]

At a town hall meeting in Rocky River, Ohio, McCain told the audience, "Some of those manufacturing jobs are not coming back and you know it and I know it." McCain added, "The economists that I know and trust and the history that I study, and I study a lot of history, says that free trade is the best thing that can happen to our nation. McCain Said "I Can't Tell You These Jobs Are Ever Going To Come Back." During a campaign trip to Youngstown, Ohio, McCain said, "I can't tell you that these jobs are ever going to come back to this magnificent part of the country â?¦ But I will commit to giving these workers a second chance. They need it, they deserve it. I know that's small comfort to you, but I can't look you in the eye and tell you those steel mills are coming back." [New York Times, 4/23/08]

McCain: "There Are Some Jobs That Aren't Coming Back To Michigan." During a Republican Debate on Fox News, McCain said, "Sometimes you have to tell people things they don't want to hear along with things that they do want to hear. McCain Belittled Mill Workers When Asked About The Detrimental Effects Of Trade. USA Today reported, "A man in Littleton [Colorado] complained that free-trade policies were destroying the textile industry. 'Frankly, I didn't know that your ambitions for your children were to work in a textile mill,' McCain said. 'I would rather have them work in the high-tech industry.'" [USA Today, 9/7/99]

McCain Told Workers Not To "Cling To An Old Economy." According to the Boston Globe, McCain said, "So we want people to be part of that revolution, and we've got to be part of that new economy, rather than try to cling to an old economy." [Boston Globe, 4/23/08]

In The 1980s, McCain Supported Maquiladora System That Threatened U.S. Jobs. States News Service reported, "The federal government's promotion of U.S. investment in Mexican factories has pitted congressmen from states bordering Mexico, including Arizona Reps. Jim Kolbe, Morris K. Udall and John McCain, against others who charge the policy exports American jobs. â?¦ Also, Republican McCain has sent a pro-maquiladora letter to his fellow congressmen in response to a 'dear colleague' letter from a Pennsylvania House member who bashed the twin plant system, according to a McCain aide. â?¦ The maquiladora system, established by the Mexican government in 1965, allows non-Mexican owners of plants within 25 miles of the border to assemble their products on the Mexican side and then bring them back to the U.S. twin plant without paying duties." Whitman, a billionaire who owns a two per cent stake in online auctioneer EBay, the second largest holding, retired in March after 10 years at the helm. Considered one of Silicon Valley's most powerful women, she remains on EBay's board and serves as a special adviser to incoming CEO John Donahoe. Her 2007 pay package included a salary of $995,016, a bonus of $243,013, and $1.4 million in non-equity incentive pay, according to the company's proxy statement. She received stock and option awards valued at $6.6 million when they were granted and other compensation equal to $792,436, including the travel expenses." [Associated Press, 4/28/08]

Despite Retiring, Meg Whitman Still Draws $1.2 Million Annually As A "Special Adviser." As reported by Barron's, "In an 8-K filing with the SEC this afternoon, eBay disclosed that outgoing CEO Meg Whitman will draw a $600,000 annual salary as a "special advisor" to the company through the end of the year. Carly Fiorina

Despite Being Forced Out, Fiorina's Severance Package Was Reportedly More Than $42 Million. CNNMoney reported, "Ex-Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina will get a severance package worth about $21.4 million, but stands to reap another $21 million after she was forced out by the computer maker's board last week, a newspaper reported Saturday. The additional amount reflects the estimated value of her Hewlett stock and options as well as her pension, which were not included in her severance package, the New York Times reported." Fiorina Was Paid $10.7 Million In 2002, But Was Decreased To $6.6 Million In 2003 Due To Poor Performance. As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, "Hewlett-Packard has slashed the pay of chief executive Carly Fiorina after she missed some performance targets last year, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commissionâ?¦ Fiorina's total pay -- including salary, bonus and stock options -- dropped about 38 percent from $10.7 million in fiscal 2002 to $6.6 million last year.

As reported by the Associated Press, "Republican Mitt Romney is expected to report financial assets between $190 million and $250 million, an amount that would likely make him the wealthiest of the 2008 presidential candidatesâ?¦ Romney also has a blind trust for his children and grandchildren that is estimated to hold assets between $70 million and $100 million, the adviser said. Fred ("Flaw And Ardor") Thompson

Fred Thompson Made $8 Million In 2006. As reported by CNN Money, "Fred Thompson may be history's best-paid public servant. He's been a senator, lawyer and lobbyist, but his stint as Arthur Branch, the DA on 'Law and Order,' and other acting bits playing past and present U.S. Presidents and FBI and CIA directors are what made him wealthy. In 2006 he took in about $3.6 million for his acting roles, another $3.6 million as a commentator for ABC Radio, plus $1.6 million for making speeches. "Deadeye" Dick Cheney

Dick Cheney Is Worth Up To $99 Million, Possibly $29 Million More Than In 2001. As reported by the Washington Post, "Vice President Cheney and his wife, Lynne, have fared better, reporting assets of at least $21 million and as much as $99 million, the forms show. The Cheneys are at least as wealthy as they were when the vice president entered office, and may have added as much as $29 million to their net worth during his tenure." [Washington Post, 5/16/08]

Cheney's Halliburton Retirement Package Was Worth An Estimated $20 Million. As reported by the New York Times, "The energy services company that Dick Cheney served for much of the last five years as chairman and chief executive has agreed to let Mr. Cheney, the Republican vice-presidential candidate, retire with a package worth an estimated $20 million, according to people who have reviewed the deal. The board of the Halliburton Company, which is based in Dallas, approved the arrangements on July 20, five days before Gov. George W. Bush announced his selection of Mr. Cheney as his running mate." To cut through the rhetoric coming out of St. Paul, here is a by-the-numbers examination of how Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin are proposing a third term of failed conservative policies.

The McCain-Palin Agenda for Our Economy:

* Zero tax relief for 100 million middle-class Americans, but trillions in tax cuts for big corporations and the very wealthy.

* $175 billion per year in tax cuts for corporations.

* $45 billion per year in tax cuts for the top 200 corporations alone.

* The top 1 percent will receive nearly 50 percent of the benefits of McCain's tax plan.

* People making $5 million a year (McCain's definition of "middle class") will get a nearly $1 million tax cut.

? Women will continue to make 78 cents to every dollar a man earns because McCain opposes legislation to close the pay gap.

The McCain-Palin Agenda for Health Care:

* 158 million Americans will be at risk of losing their employer-sponsored health care coverage.

* 56 million Americans with chronic illnesses will be at risk of losing their coverage.

* More than 59 million women who receive their health insurance through their job or their spouse's job will be at risk of losing that insurance.

* More than 30 million women who suffer from a chronic condition could lose their coverage, find it harder to obtain coverage, or have to purchase supplemental insurance to cover their chronic condition.

* Millions of middle class Americans will see their taxes go up, because McCain's health care tax credit is not indexed to keep up with costs. (For instance, a family making $60,000 a year will see their taxes go up by $1,100 by 2013.)

* McCain's one-size-fits-all health care tax credit will fall far short of covering many Americans' health care costs. For instance, it will cover less than one-third of the average health care costs for older, sicker Americans.

The McCain-Palin Agenda for Energy:

* $4 billion in tax cuts for the top 5 oil companies in the U.S. ($1.2 trillion a year for ExxonMobil alone).

* $39 billion in taxpayer subsidies for big oil and gas companies over the next five years.

* More than 30 years before gas prices go down, because it will take at least that long for McCain's drilling proposal to affect prices.

? $0 in gas price relief from drilling, instead of up to $500 in relief from a proposed gas rebate that McCain opposes.

The McCain-Palin Agenda for Four More Years of the Same Failed Conservative Agenda:

* 159 lobbyists working for the McCain-Palin campaign.

* 0 new ideas to get our economy working again and restore our leadership around the world.

* 4 more years of President Bush's policy agenda.
