Boehner to Obama: We'll get your back you if you
propose Medicare, Social Security cuts

John BoehnerJohn Boehner (Photo: mcclintock.house.gov)

The Hill reports this hilarity:

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has privately assured President Obama that House Republicans will not attack him if he makes a proposal to reform entitlement spending, according to sources familiar with the offer.

Moreover, Boehner has personally promised Obama that he will stand side by side with him to weather the strong political backlash expected from any proposal to cut entitlement costs.

Yes, this is the same John Boehner who has spent the better part of the last two years attacking President Obama for trying to kill grandma because health care reform will reduce health care spending by $500 billion through the imposition of death panels. In his words, health care reform could:

Start us down a treacherous path toward government-encouraged euthanasia if enacted into law.

So, the last time President Obama did something about entitlement costs, John Boehner essentially accused him of being a mass-murderer, even though the truth was all of the cost savings will come without benefit reductions. And now Boehner is promising that if President Obama would just take the lead on his plan to cut Social Security and Medicare that they will play nice? If he thinks that's going to work, he's even dumber than he looks.

Mike Huckabee Smears Single Mothers

Are you hearing him now? Mike Huckabee’s maliciously venomous charm has been on parade all week on wingnut radio. He’s trying to sell books by talking to a crowd of people who tend to be allergic to facts, because they don’t get them[...]

Jon Stewart Turns Over Show to Oft-Neglected Side
of the Education Debate

The typical Bill Gates/Arne Duncan perspective of privatization and union-busting is so prevalent on American television, critics like Ravitch never get an opportunity. She rightly points out that Finland, held up as a model in movies like Waiting for[...]

Arizona Senate Passes Bill To Let State Nullify
Federal Laws

After being shot down earlier this week, the Arizona State Senate revived and successfully passed a bill that would create a mechanism for the state to nullify federal laws.

As TPM has reported, Senate Bill 1433 would create a 12-person "Joint Legislative Committee on Nullification of Federal Laws," which would "recommend, propose and call for a vote by simple majority to nullify in its entirety a specific federal law or regulation that is outside the scope of the powers delegated by the People to the federal government in the United States Constitution."

The bill passed the Senate 16-11 after three Republicans switched their vote.

Iowa passed a similar bill in its House last month, though that bill specified that the state would not be required to follow the individual mandate in the health care reform law. The Arizona bill gives the committee more broad powers to review "all existing federal statutes, mandates and Executive orders for the purpose of determining their constitutionality."

But State Senate President Russell Pearce (R) -- who introduced the bill, and also sponsored the state's controversial immigration law -- implied that health care reform was at least part of the impetus for the law: "If we don't take back our sovereign ability for the states to control the federal government, I guess we have no right to complain," he said, the Arizona Republic reports. "I guess 'Obamacare' is OK for you."

Nullification laws go against the language of the Constitution, which is pretty clear on the subject:

This Constitution, and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the Constitution or laws of any State to the contrary notwithstanding.

The Arizona bill will now go to the House for a vote.

Protests today in Bahrain, Cairo and throughout
Iraq

If the Egyptian government thought that Mubarak's departure would settle the issue, they are discovering how intent the people are on ensuring that promises are kept. In Iraq, protests are being reported due to the lack of progress since the downfall of Saddam Hussein. In Bahrain, sectarian conflict is at the heart of the problem.

Fights between Shias and Sunnis in central Bahrain raised the spectre of sectarian violence ahead of large anti-government demonstrations planned for Friday afternoon.

As protests enter their third week with largely Shia demonstrators bedded down on Pearl Roundabout in the capital, the street battles in Hamad Town on Thursday night marked the first escalation into inter-communal violence amid increasingly bitter rhetoric.
Protesters in Tripoli were reportedly tear gassed today by Gaddafi forces following Friday prayers.
