Grateful Dead Members to Reunite for Barack Obama

Members of the Grateful Dead will host a get out the vote
concert in support of Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama on
Monday, February 4th at The Warfield Theatre in San Francisco.

Mickey Hart, Phil Lesh, and Bob Weir, joined by Jackie Greene, John Molo, and Steve Molitz, will play a show together in support of Barack Obama.

The video website Iclips will be producing a live simulcast streamed via the Internet on www.iclips.net at approximately 7:30 PM PST.

This will mark the first time that the members of the legendary band have performed together since 2004. They have agreed to reunite for this one-time-only event in order to lend support to Senator Obama leading into the crucial "Super-Tuesday" series of primaries held on Tuesday, February 5th.

Hey Mickey, Phil and Bob, how about a request?

New Speedway Boogie

Please don't dominate the rap, jack, if you've got nothing new to say.
If you please, don't back up the track this train's got to run today.
I spent a little time on the mountain, I spent a little time on the hill
I heard someone say "Better run away", others say "better stand still".

Now I don't know, but I been told it's hard to run with the weight of gold,
Other hand I have heard it said, it's just as hard with the weight of lead.

Who can deny, who can deny, it's not just a change in style?
One step down and another begun and I wonder how many miles.
I spent a little time on the mountain, I spent a little time on the hill
Things went down we don't understand, but I think in time we will.
Now, I don't know but I was told in the heat of the sun a man died of cold.
Keep on coming or stand and wait, with the sun so dark and the hour so late.
You can't overlook the lack, jack, of any other highway to ride.
It's got no signs or dividing lines and very few rule to guide.

I saw things getting out of hand, I guess they always will.
Now I don't know but I been told
If the horse don't pull you got to carry the load.
I don't know whose back's that strong, maybe find out before too long.

One way or another, one way or another,
One way or another, this darkness got to give.

Thirty-five bucks, you kidding me? Lucky left coasties!

Obama and Clinton are connected by a Chicago
Expressway

BUZZFLASH EDITOR'S BLOG

If you leave Barack Obama's home in the Hyde Park (University of Chicago) neighborhood and head to the Dan Ryan expressway, in non rush-hour traffic it will be just about a 45-minute drive north until the Cumberland exit, where you exit into Park Ridge, the childhood suburb where Hillary Clinton was raised until she went off to Wellseley.

Cheers and Jeers: Monday

From the GREAT STATE OF MAINE...

Georgia on my mind

In our continuing attempt to show Tim Russert how to conduct a decent interview, C&J puts Daily Kos front-pager Georgia10 in the beanbag chair for a 15-question grillin'. It's part seven (or maybe six or five; like Joe Klein, I don’t have the time or inclination to look things up) in our series: Yes, We're All Staring At YOU!

Where were you born and were you a good baby or a bad baby?
I was born in Chicago. I was a bad baby. I kept trying to escape my crib. The first two years of my life were like a bad Prison Break episode.

Your bio says you became addicted to politics at 22. What was it that got you hooked?
This site :)  Before the 2004 election, I was your typical American, oblivious to Washington machinations and insider politics. I was poking around the web to get some information on John Kerry, and was sucked into the political vortex that is Daily Kos. It's the orange color. It's addicting.

A few years back the Chicago Reader called you of the most influential bloggers on the internet. What kind of toll has your meteoric rise taken on you? Please be specific so I can send some good "dirt" to TMZ.com.
The paparazzi are becoming annoying, and seeing my name all over the papers can get a bit tiring. Oh, wait? I'm not all over the papers? Damn. I need a better publicist.

What kind of music makes you feel invincible to the GOP horde?
I love rock and alternative music, everything from to The Doors to Serj Tankian. Passive by A Perfect Circle is my "writing" song. That or Requiem for A Dream.  Whenever I get writer’s block or feel so frustrated by the GOP shennanigans I can't see straight, those songs always help clear my head.

Speaking as a pesky voter, what is your #1 election issue for 2008?
I'm a quasi-single issue voter: Iraq. That's because Iraq permeates every single issue. How can we talk about balancing the budget when we have hundreds of billions funneled into that disaster? How can we talk about health care without talking about the fact that 1 out of every 5 soldiers come home with a traumatic brain injury? How can we debate reducing our dependence on foreign oil when we're spending more on an occupation than on innovation?

What's the one book every Kossack must read?
The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene. Or Dante's Divine Comedy. Either one is great brain food.

Finish this sentence: In the kitchen I make a mean...
Chicken stuffed with feta and spinach. I love to cook.  Absolutely love it. Back in the day, I seriously considered becoming a chef. But I thought the tall white hat would make me look fat.

Adam B, another front-pager who is, like you, an attorney, wimped out when I asked him how to get out of a speeding ticket (something about not being able to provide legal advice to non-clients and yadda yadda yadda). So, Georgia , dear...what's the best way to get out of a speeding ticket?
Explain to the officer that your Segway got stuck in "super-duper-fast" mode and it wasn't your fault. Silly pseudo-scooters.

What do you do for fun when you're not blogging?
Exploring music, reading, daydreaming. Trying to learn how to play the guitar. Shopping, of course (I love these Democratic/GOTV totes from Freddy&Ma). Pondering LOST theories (good gawd, I can’t wait for the premiere).

Which congressional/senatorial races are you watching most closely?
We have a lot of hot races taking place here in Illinois. Mark Pera (IL-03) and Dan Seals (IL-10) are both fantastic candidates who are giving their opponents a run for their money. I'm eager to see the outcome of both of those races.

What has surprised you most since you started writing for the front page lo those many years ago?
This community.  Writing for the FP is a remarkably humbling and rewarding experience. I read every single comment to my pieces, and I'm always amazed at the depth and range of the commentary (not just on FP posts, but throughout the site). We have so many brilliant people on this site whose name isn't on a FP byline but who contribute so much to this place.

I’m also surprised that apparently, keyboards sold to Republicans come sans a CAPS LOCK key (us front pagers tend to get our fair share of the freeper mail).

No waffling here: dogs or cats?
Dogs. If I said anything else, my Westie would kill me.

What are your favorite blogs besides Daily Kos?
Josh at Talking Points Memo is a daily read, as is the genius of Digby. I like John's work over at Crooks & Liars. The other John over at AmericaBlog is always interesting.

Looking into your crystal ball, how do you see the election shaking out in November in terms of the White House and pick-ups in Congress?
We'll pick up a substantial number of seats in both the House and Senate, hopefully enough to build a workable majority (thanks, GOP!). In terms of the White House, I think any of our candidates have the potential to wallop any Republican candidate, provided they make the distinction between the parties crystal clear for the voters and call the GOP out on their lies every step of the way.

I have one question left, but I smell something burning. Please ask and answer the final question yourself while I fetch some wet blankets.

Is there a Daily Kos Facebook group?
Why, yes, Bill, thanks for asking. There is indeed such a group, where many a Kossack gather and have great fun. Not as much fun as Cheers & Jeers though, which has set an unattainable level of funitude on the internets.

Next week: I make a front-pager cry.

Cheers and Jeers starts in There's Moreville... [Swoosh!!] RIGHTNOW! [Gong!!]

Mandates

I know all serious people think "mandates" are the only way to get universal health care in this country, but "garnishing your wages" sounds a hell of a lot scarier than "taxes will pay for it."

WASHINGTON - Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton said Sunday she might be willing to garnish the wages of workers who refuse to buy health insurance to achieve coverage for all Americans.

The New York senator has criticized presidential rival Barack Obama for pushing a health plan that would not require universal coverage. Clinton has not always specified the enforcement measures she would embrace, but when pressed on ABC's "This Week," she said: "I think there are a number of mechanisms" that are possible, including "going after people's wages, automatic enrollment."

This isn't a knock on Clinton, it's just that the whole concept is flawed. "Raise your taxes" is actually more politically palatable than "make you buy it."

Question of the Day ~ Spam, therefore I Am

I sent a couple emails out last Thursday, when Joools said she would be on vacation today, to people who had mentioned they had a qotd brewing...

I got nadda back. Nothing. In fact, were it not for Carolyn Kay's daily mailing, and blogger emailing me every time some one comments, I would think my email was broken lately. Heh.

Blessedly, with Maryscott back, my emails in general have dramatically dropped.  :::Thanks the Goddess::: But I am a polite emailer, my Momma taught me it was mannerly to reply, and reply I did, when that was the case.

But I know I must still exist, I have 197 SPAMS since yesterday in my Spam folder, despite the cobwebs in my usual inbox.

UGGGG!

My old AOL acct blocked them entirely, once reported as spam.  That was cool.  The old days were only about adding inches to my non-existent penis, Viagra and some chick I had never heard of named "Paris" and her sex video.

Firefox, on the other hand, just slaps them into a folder, and could you hook blades to them, they spin ever upwards with the velocity of a decent fan. No, wait, that is not entirely the fault of my browser, the fault lies with me.

You see, my husband called with a radio commercial he had heard about a couple dozen free x-box's being given out in our area, if you did a survey.

I did it. EVERY fucking page, I clicked "no" to "contact me with offers" until finally I got wind of the scam and shut it down. (That website shut down within days, no longer exists, or they would get a reaming from me)

Now Target wants to give me Gift Cards, and they want me to start training to be a CSI, and Green Tea wants to suck 25 pounds of fat off my ass.

Medical billing online is sure to make me an instant millionaire, if the Daters Wanted doesn't keep me so busy with Sexy Singles I cripple myself  first, or I am too busy cashing in the UK LOTTERY winner I never entered. Lasik wants my eyes, Auto.com wants me to drive an '08, and they desperately need surveys taken about cigarettes.

The trickseyest(yes, gollum coined that phrase!) ones use a first name for the email address, and yours in the header... like we'd fall for that?

I entered the world of personal computers late, but I already was bombarded with emails from friends, warning me of the dangers of opening spam.

They have gotten really trickseyer, (y,gctp!) indeed! So have I, in this age of paranoia. It doesn't take a hundred "port scans" a day popping up and blocked by my blockers to tell me people want into my computer. What the fuck do they think they will find in here anyway? I am not that interesting! Spyware to follow my every click? Boring.

Viruses will eat your anodes, corrupt your memory and turn your little babies into monkeys!  Or was that drugs, I can never remember....

So, who falls for these anyway?

I mean, does anyone open SPAM, or order from infomercials anyway? Some one MUST or they wouldn't waste their time. Am I missing really good deals, are any of these legit?

Yes, yes, I pose many questions on my questions...

But here is the real one(s):

Have you ever opened SPAM, on purpose or by accident?

Are any of them legit? ~ If so, which?

I do have a friend who swears by the shopping channels, and as a result, ended up with a nifty Wolfgang Puck mixer she tired of dusting.

I have to wonder, maybe a University of Phoenix online degree in one month may yet save my life....
