The Right Wings Phony Controversy About Obama
Bankrupting the Coal Industry

Right wing blogging sites are exploding with stories that Obama told a California audience he intends to bankrupt the coal industry or at least the builders of coal plants. This is a manufactured story based on a predictable misrepresentation of what[...]

Queen Esther v. The One, Mighty and Strong (or
Barbie and Ken go all biblical on each other)

While many of us support Sarah Palin's efforts to sink McCain so she can come back as Queen Esther to in 2012, many Mormon Republicans are working hard for McCain's defeat so that Mitt Romney may return and fulfill a prophecy received by Joseph Smith (link--about 4:50 into the video). The prophecy, known as the White Horse Prophecy, states that the Constitution will be hanging by a thread and an elder from Zion will ride in on a white horse to save it.

So if you think this election is wild, wait until Queen Esther takes on The One, Mighty and Strong.* I'm eager to see who wins this one. Whose God is stronger? Is it Palin's bachelor God who suffers from multiple personality disorder and likes to chat with peculiar Alaskan women? Or will Romney's philandering God--who knocked up Mary while His wife, Heather H. Yahweh, was busy quilting solar systems together at Relief Society--be the victor?

I'm thinking it might be a good idea to stay neutral--at least until after the convention.

*Because if Mitt's has to get on a horse, he might as well fulfill another prophecy by becoming The One, Mighty and Strong, as well.

Marine calls Murtha some fat little bastard.

murtha.gifThe right-wing, led by Drudge, is promoting criticisms of Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) made by Iraq war vet Shawn Bryan. Calling Murtha ?some fat little bastard,? Bryan — a Marine — asserted that Murtha?s efforts to reveal the cover-up of the Haditha massacres ?betrayed? his service. But VetVoice?s RockRichard astutely notes that Bryan is getting worked up over comments that weren?t even directed at him. That?s because Bryan was not a member of the Marines who participated in the Haditha tragedy:

Shawn Bryan served in the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines in Iraq. That Battalion returned from Iraq in early October of 2005, over a month before the Haditha killings.

Moreover, VetVoice notes that some of Murtha?s harshest critics fail to appreciate that Murtha worked tirelessly in Congress to get more funding for better armor to protect the troops.

90,000 "Fired Up, Ready to Go" for Obama in
Manassas tonight

John and Rob were at the Obama event tonight in Northern Virginia. We've had sporadic communication, but I'm hearing there are some great photos.

The crowd was huge. HUGE. There were 90,000 people at the rally in Manassas. That is astounding:

On the eve of the presidential election, Sen. Barack Obama reached back to the roots of his campaign to tell an inspirational story that had long ago fallen from his routine.

The story is about a long drive, a rainy day and how one person can make a difference. It was inspired by a woman Obama met during a visit to a small South Carolina town in 2007 and grew to be a favorite during his Iowa caucus campaign.

It ends with Obama leading a cheer of "Fired up, Ready to Go!"

The Illinois Democrat has not told the story much since the South Carolina primary. He last brought it out in mid-October in New York City during a fundraiser that included performances from Bruce Springsteen and Bill Joel.

Edith Childs of Greenwood, S.C., is the woman who inspired the story. Obama had met her during a campaign appearance back when the Democratic nomination - much less the presidency - looked like a long shot.

A crowd his campaign said totaled 90,000 chanted along to end what was the last rally of Obama's 21-month presidential campaign.

"This is the last rally of a campaign that began almost two years ago," he said. "We've gone to every corner of this country."
90,000.

We'll have more when John and Rob get back -- or get internet access.

A Nit

Not the biggest deal but I hate silly stupid stuff whether its the Media or the blogs. In this case it is a twofer. Both the normally solid NYTimes reporter John Harwood and MYDD blogger Todd Beeton forward the idea that Barack Obama is outperforming Bill Clinton among white voters. Harwood writes:

In last week's New York Times/CBS News poll, Mr. Obama drew 44 percent support among whites -- a higher proportion than Bill Clinton captured in his general election victories.

More . . .

Beeton further cites the unreliable Q pollster Peter Brown who says "Sen. Obama appears headed for the best showing of any Democratic candidate among white voters in a generation, going back at least to Jimmy Carter in 1976 and perhaps even to Lyndon Johnson in 1964 . . " This is, in a word, ridiculous. Let's assume for the sake of argument, the high end Times poll (the one that had Obama winning by 13) is correct and Obama gets 44% of the white vote - it still will not compare to Bill Clinton's 1996 performance since Clinton ran only 3 points behind Bob Dole among white voters (Perot took 9% of the white vote.) Clinton won Georgia, Arkansas and Louisiana (Obama will win none of these.) Look, Obama has run a great general election campaign (watching him talk about his grandmother was especially moving just now) - we do not need to hype his work with silly nonsense. Obama is helping to create a new Democratic majority, winning younger white voters as well as Latinos and African Americans in record numbers. No need to misstate facts to praise him.

By Big Tent Democrat, speaking for me only
