Add to myYahoo!WASILLA, Alaska - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said Friday she is resigning from office at the end of the month, raising speculation that she would focus on a run for the White House in the 2012 race. The former Republican vice presidential candidate made the surprise announcement from her home in suburban Wasilla on Friday morning. She said she would step down July 26 but didn't announce her plans.
"Once I decided not to run for re-election, I also felt that to embrace the conventional Lame Duck status in this particular climate would just be another dose of politics as usual, something I campaigned against and will always oppose," Palin said in a statement released by her office.
"It is my duty to always protect our great state. With that in mind, my family and I determined that it is best to make a difference this summer, and I am willing to change things, so that this administration, with its positive agenda, its accomplishments, and its successful road to an incredible future, can continue without interruption and with great administrative and legislative success," she said.

Add to myYahoo! With fat bonuses and pay increases, it may still be steaks for Wall Street but elsewhere in America it's all about the budget cuts.
Americans will be throwing more hot dogs and hamburgers on their backyard grills rather than higher-priced meat like steaks this July 4 U.S. Independence Day holiday as the recession and high unemployment crimp celebrations.
"It will be the cheaper cuts that will take the majority of the business," said John Kleist, analyst with the McHenry, Ill-based advisory firm Allendale Inc.
"We would do well to say that meat movement over the holiday was decent. That is the best we can hope for," said Kleist.
High unemployment and the recession are controlling people's spending decisions, and as a result the cost and size of holiday meals will be down from years past.

Add to myYahoo!Today, at the AT&T National at Congressional Country Club, a singer whose name may be Jessica Simpson sang the National Anthem in a way that has inspired me to continue singing, since I know I can never sing in private in my life as badly as she sang in public today. The woman's voice cracked on high notes, showed an amazing lack of the vocal power necessary to sing convincingly about war victories and national grandeur.
Maybe she was chosen to by Hugo Chavez to sing the National Anthem, so that her voice could embarrass and shame the nation from inside far more from inside than anything that Chavez could say from outside.
When I ask myself how she could have been chosen to sing the National Anthem (about which I couldn't care less anyway, but I care about singing and music), it seems to me that whoever chose her looked carefully at her blond hair, large breasts, white skin and decided that it didn't make any difference that her singing is pathetically worse than bad; it's grating as fingernails on a pea-colored chalk board.
Meanwhile, golfer Tiger Woods eulogized US troops just like a patriotic white golfer would have, reasserting the concept that the best way to celebrate liberty is to remind ourselves that US troops are busy and risking their lives tosubjugate other nation's overseas.
During last year's presidential campaign, President Barack Obama promised to move the Iraq War across the boarder into Afghanistan. He has made good on his campaign promise and the move is almost complete, because although US troops haven't completely left Iraq, they are kicking in doors and bombing Aghans from the air just as they did in Fallujah a few years ago.
And so I can't help but ask myself if anything at all has been or will be accomplished by moving a war from one country to another. During the electoral campaign, Barack Obama said Bush had turned the wrong country into a basket case and he would not make that mistake as president. He doesn't disappoint. He has moved the war across the boarder into Afghanistan and that's geographical "change you can believe in".
Back in 2006/7, DailyKos readers angrily rejected my observation that there is something in the American psyche (or pocketbook or both) that needs a war as much as a crack addict wants another hit of crack.
Does the Iraq War Represent Something Bloodthirsty in American Psyche?
(July 30, 2006)
It's true, and not coincidental that I wrote that essay in the patriotic (say "bloodthirsty") month of July, three years ago. America as a nation loves war. And that's why Senator Obama never criticized or deprecated war in the abstract when he was running for president; he merely said that Bush's war had been parked in the wrong parking space, while never criticizing the vehicle itself. He promised to park more conscientiously than Bush, and he has. Now, the America vs. Peace war is in the right parking space.
So, Happy Fourth of July, America! You've proved your ability to project environmental, economic and military chaos from the shores of the Exxon Valdez to the caves of Afghanistan, and for that the entire world says in unison, "Fuck you very much!" You deserve Jessica Simpson.

Breaking News: Sarah Palin Resigning as Alaska’s Governor
Sarah Palin, why do you hate America?
You’ve always been so pro-gun, anti-abortion, and drill-baby-drill supporting - you know, the traditional American values. How could you now - on the eve of this nation’s most sacred holiday - desecrate Old Glory by posing with it heaped unceremoniously on a bar stool?
Displaying your gorgeous diamond and ruby encrusted flag pins - from the QVC/Madeleine Albright collection for $15.95 per pound - has always been your patriotic hallmark, the front line of your fierce defense of the “Real America“.
I remember when you criticized that socialist pretender to the Presidency, Barak Hussein Obama, for not wearing his pin. You didn’t wince from controversy. When rabid left-wing lunatics pointed out that the world’s greatest leader, our dear President Mr. George W. Bush, sometimes went without his flag pin you laughed in their faces and reminded them you were a maverick.
How right you were.
You knew that if Obama became President he’d outlaw flags and have them brought to huge “inflammation” centers to be burned using recycled Fryolator grease from McDonalds.
I was a little upset when you literally wrapped yourself in our flag, but when I thought moe about it, I decided it was OK. After all, what would stylish mavericks wear if not our glorious, Godly, and triumphant banner?
But a bar stool Sarah? That’s the single most dangerous piece of furniture in a good tea-totalling, Christian home.
WWJD?
I hope this desecration of our flag was completely the fault of Runners’ World magazine and their liberal mainstream media PhotoShopery. I still have faith in your maverickosity. Sarah, please do the right thing and display our flag correctly.
If not, I might need to tell Rush Limbaugh and Glen Beck about you.

Fox News is airing a new commercial on their station that frankly had me almost throwing up in my mouth a little when I saw it. Fox has decided to roll out their full list of regular pundits to espouse the network's journalistic integrity and "core principles". No...I'm not joking.
Here are some of the "principles" they claim Fox News promotes: civility, mutual respect, strengthening our diverse society by striving for unity, tolerance, open debate and civil discourse.
Yeah, that's exactly what I think of when I see the likes of Sean Hannity or Bill O'Reilly screaming over one of their guests. Or Glenn Beck riding that crazy train off into the horizon. Or Laura Ingraham on one of her hate filled screeds that's akin to listening to finger nails on a chalk board.
And for a real hoot, check out the ticker that's running below the ad. Breaking News!!... Fox News realizes that Helen Thomas exists and actually cares about what she has to say now that it's criticism of the Obama administration.
I love Helen to death, but her whining about Nico Pitney getting a question from the White House sounds like sour grapes to me from a typical Villager. There's plenty to complain about besides a blogger getting to ask one lousy question that's wrong with that White House press corps if she wants to go on a rant about what's wrong with our media.
I think this Fox Nation ad could use a better description than the one I came up with for the video and the post. I'd love to hear suggestions from the readers here who by and large are always more creative than I am when it comes to these things. We've done some "write your own caption posts". I'll gladly have this be a "write your own video description" instead. Submissions welcomed if you'd care to give all of us a laugh.
