Personal Finance Disclosures Reveal Leading F-22
Defender Phil Gingrey Owns Boeing Stock

Last week, Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) and VoteVets Chairman Jon Soltz sparred on MSNBC about reinstating funds for new F-22s. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has called for capping production of the F-22 Raptor, a fighter that has never seen combat in the Iraq or Afghanistan theaters. Despite the fact that the OMB recommended a veto if the defense authorization budget contains new F-22s, members of Congress in the House Armed Services committee, lead by Gingrey, slipped the funding in anyways. In his debate with Gingrey, Soltz said:

The Congressman cares about the Lockheed Martin stock price, and I care about the men and women who fight on the group. And this weapon system does nothing for us.

Indeed, Gingrey’s 2008 personal finance disclosure reveals that the Congressman owned between $50,000 to $100,000 in Boeing stock, a company that joined with Lockheed to manufacture the F-22. Gingrey’s latest personal finance disclosure report, filed late this year and posted online this week, shows he still owns Boeing stock, but it has dropped in value to $15,000 to $50,000. Because Lockheed Martin is Boeing’s partner in building the F-22, Gingrey does have an actual incentive to see an additional $369 million in unnecessarily spending for new F-22s.

Gov. Sarah Palin announced today that she will resign in a few weeks. Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will take over at the Governor's Picnic in Fairbanks on July 25.

She made the announcement at a news conference at her home in Wasilla.

If you are like me, one of the first blogs you check every morning is my friend Kevin Drum at Mother Jones. But this morning when I tried to click over, I got a server error. Remembering the hacker attack that brought Washington Monthly down recently, I started an email to Kevin, inquiring as to whether or not he and the rest of the crew at MoJo were aware of the problem. I am, after all, a couple of hours ahead of them.

They are painfully aware of the problem, as it turns out. There was a fire last night in the building where their servers are located, and they are working furiously to get the most dangerous bloggers in America back up and running and saving the world.

Being fully cognizant of the fact that I would have about fifteen readers if not for Kevin Drum (and Steve Benen) I will be happy to step into the Friday Catblogging breach to keep the fans of Inkblot and Domino from going into withdrawal. Some how, some way Blogtopia (y!sctp!) will have cats this afternoon!

Be warned, FOX News stupidity Alert!

Bill O'Reilly never has liberals fill in for him when he takes a vacation, so I was surprised to see Juan Williams in the anchor chair Wednesday night. And then I asked myself: Self, why am I surprised? Williams is BillO's chief apologist night in and night out and he would make a good little conservative talk show host in a pickle. And he did. Well, there were none of the Talking Points Memo segment that opens up The Factor every night because they probably didn't trust Juan to deliver them with the proper hateful spin, but he easily tried to do a BillO imitation the rest of the show.
It was quite hilarious listening to him stiffly yell about taxes being raised by the evil Obamanites. And then came Bernie Goldberg. They were both so appalled that CBS' Scott Pelley wouldn't invite any global warming deniers on his Global Warming special. Juan said: Not a single one. The horror, I say. And then Bernie went off on his new affirmative action plan.

Goldberg: I came up with a plan and it's a brilliant plan. Every white person in America who thinks that affirmative action is a good thing and it makes America a better place, voluntarily gives up his and her jobs immediately, right now on one and only one condition. That they be replaced by somebody who isn't white. That way, by tomorrow or the next day we'd have a lot more Blacks, a lot more Hispanics, a lot more other minorities in very important positions....
Juan: Bernie, hold on. Aren't you mocking the seriousness of this because to my mind look,....but the fact is doors have been closed, Bernie.
Listen, we have an ugly racial history...at least my plan is addressing liberal, white liberal hypocrisy because when I put this plan.(blah, blah, blah) White liberals don't want to pay a price. They only want to dole out their racial goodies.

Can Goldberg tell us the number of white liberals who have or have not got a job in part because of affirmative action? Of course not. Conservatives were the only people targeted. Oy.

Bernie, your stupidity knows no bounds. I won't waste any time writing about how offensive his statements are because there are so many other implications to the rest of his rant. You can do that in the comments. And Williams couldn't even muster much of a response to Bernie's nonsensical whim other than, doors have been closed...because he was waist deep in being a conservative commentator. Go, Juan, go!

Something doesn't compute here

Sanford Didn't Use State Money For His Affair, S.C. Officials Say

From the very same article:

He [Sanford] reimbursed the state $3,304 this week for part of an official state-sponsored trip to Brazil and Argentina in June 2008 during which he spent time with his mistress, Maria Belén Chapur, said Sanford's spokesman, Joel Sawyer.

So here's the question: why the heck is Sanford reimbursing the state for his trip to Argentina if public funds were never used during his affair?

That just doesn't make any sense. If he didn't use public funds, how could there by anything to reimburse?

And if he did use public funds, isn't this like saying a bank robber didn't do anything wrong because he (or she) returned the stolen money?
