It used to be that ordinary people were extremely reluctant to believe that police officers ever abuse their power. The prevalence of video cameras is changing that.
Within the past week, two videos have surfaced showing what appears to be police misconduct in New York. In one video, viewed more than 1 million times on YouTube, a police officer is seen charging a bicyclist and knocking him to the ground during a July 25 group bicycle ride through Times Square -- despite the officer's sworn complaint that the cyclist tried to run him down.
So let's hear it for "Jimmy Justice," a "cop-arazzi" who "prowls the streets of New York looking for law enforcement officers who are breaking the law." While the abuses he documents are minor -- police cars parked illegally while drivers engage in personal errands -- he's performing a public service by exposing the "laws don't apply to us" mentality that drives too many officers.

Add to myYahoo! No wonder they have so much money to shovel over to the McCain campaign. McSame as it ever was. Why is McCain letting them dictate American energy policy as they did under Bush?
Oil giants Chevron Corp. and Total SA wrapped up a string of gargantuan, record-breaking earnings reports Friday, a stretch in which six of the major international oil companies topped $50 billion in combined profit for the first time.
While the profits of unparalleled size have brought withering criticism from Washington and disgust from consumers across the country, very few were surprised. Crude prices during the second quarter were nearly double what they were a year ago.

(Note: I've been banned from DailyKos for writing about the John Edwards scandal. This post is a direct report of what I wrote there, for archival purposes - because some of it deals with the Kossack's reactions in comments, parts of it may not make sense.
I'll do an original post here in the next week.

Before I dive in, let me get the 'objectivity' thing out of the way. As a citizen journalist whose main claim to fame is producing satirical comedy, I can be upfront about my political leanings. I'm a recovering libertarian and currently I'm a registered Democrat who is excited to be voting for Barack Obama in November. I like John Edwards and up until a few days ago, he would have been my first choice for Vice President on an Obama ticket. I'm far from Puritan - anything two or more consenting adults want to do is fine by me. I also think it's obvious a person's sexual life doesn't keeps them from being an effective politician.
I'm judging this situation using two standards; 1) what's the truth? 2) how's it going to play out in the media?
The truth is that I believe anyone who looks into the John Edwards / Rielle Hunter affair story will see that Edwards has, at best, acted in a very suspicious manner for over a year now. When the Larry Craig story was breaking, I didn't buy his particular line of bullshit and I don't buy Edwards's either after I've spent the last couple of days Googling with my wife. (That's not as dirty as it sounds.) At first, I was skeptical of the National Enquirer story catching Edwards leaving the Beverly Hills Hotel at 2:45am because there were no pictures and the tabloids aren't reliable. Now it turns out that Edwards was at the hotel, so was Ms. Hunter, and that he when he saw reporters he hid in the bathroom until security guards came and got him.
I got more suspicious after reading a story on The Huffington Post from last September by Sam Stein detailing the weird story of some short webisodes about John Edwards that mysteriously were pulled off the internet. Read it yourself here and fold it into the mix of the current allegations.
Let's go with the assumption that Edwards is innocent for a moment; he didn't have the affair so the baby isn't his. If he didn't do anything wrong then it seems like he'd have good reasons to stop the rumors. A DNA test months ago would have ended all speculation about the paternity of the baby. Isn't that a better, less suspicious move than pulling down all the videos that Rielle Hunter helped produce about him for his campaign? And if there are rumors and you're innocent, WHY go visit the subject of those rumors at a hotel and leave at 2:45 in the morning? Why hide in the bathroom when reporters catch you leaving? These actions don't make any more sense to me than Craig's 'wide stance / dropped my toilet paper' defense did.
How's it going to play out? It seems to me that this is going to be a tsunami-sized scandal for the Democratic Party and right now the coming typhoon of press coverage is close to breaking. We're at the point of calm before the big waves hit but there are signs of the impending deluge. Jay Leno is making jokes about it. Perez Hilton is on the story. The mainstream media is fairly quiet but the most ominous silence right now is from the progressive blogosphere.
The progressive blogosphere is ignoring this story at its own peril because it's going to be big. At this moment, there's a weird state of denial about the entire thing. As of 4pm Saturday, nothing at all on TalkingPointMemo.com. DailyKos did a dismissive post making fun of the Enquirer. FireDogLake? Nothing. Americablog? Nada. These are some of my favorite blogs, by the way.
The Huffington Post has at least hovered about the edges of the story as it's been unfolding. There have been a couple of half-hearted, nothing-to-see-here blogs but also news reports on the latest events. A blog by John McQuaid said that there's no "physical evidence a la Bill Clinton." Well, there's a baby. Not a stained dress left to hang in the closest for a few months but a real cooing, smiling little baby who I assume looks adorable on camera and probably has nice hair. That lil' tyke is stuffed full of DNA, too. Cute little DNA.
Despite what some people are going to say, this is news. A former Senator and Vice Presidential candidate who was running for President less than six months ago and is now on the short list for Vice President has an long affair during the campaign and fathers a child, covers it up, and then is caught at a hotel with the mother of the child. News! Oh - and his wife made regular appearances on the campaign trail and as been diagnosed with cancer. If it were Mitt Romney, you'd be hearing peels of laughter and the satisfying smacking sound of Merlot- and Starbucks-fueled high fives coming from the nearest blue state. Would it have made the progressive blogs? C'mon, of course it would...with funny pictures and as many self-satisfied comments as you can shake a Macbook Air at.
It's a juicy story that has so many elements that are easy hooks for those short segments on cable news where two people argue while the news anchor asks softball questions. Here's a quick list of all the story angles I can think of just off the top of my head.
John Edwards Matters He's been the conscience of the Democratic Party and a compelling presence speaking out on the growing gap between rich and poor. If he wasn't going to be Vice President, most Democrats wanted him somwhere in an Obama cabinet.
Video Clips Galore Cable news loves showing video clips, usually in looping montages. Those webisodes that Hunter made that were taken down? They look flirty and suspicious in light of the alleged affair.
It's Recent The Edwards affair happened during the primary campaign. This isn't ancient history. What if he's WON the primary? Would he really have taken the nomination and handed the race to McCain?
Primary Revisionism Will the affair change the way we look back on the primary? Why did Edwards drop out of the race so quickly? Why did Edwards not endorse anyone until his endorsement was a moot point? Endless debates will ensue.
DNA The press loves any story with DNA. Drama! DNA test refusals. Acceptance. Test goes out. What will happen? It's like Montel Williams but it takes weeks!
Democratic Convention in Denver happening soon. Will Edwards speak? Will he appear at all? What about Elizabeth? Oh, the drama. You'll see.
"How could he do that to his sick wife?" This whole thing doesn't play well with women voters. Or women non-voters. Or men.
"Should we care about politician's sex lives?" Whatever your answer, that's a hook for the press. As soon as the story reaches a big tipping point, the mainstream press will question the story.
"Liberal media bias" - here's the big one. Republicans have had a lot of embarrassing, juicy sex scandals of their own lately and boy, do they want some payback. It doesn't look good that the Los Angeles Times banned bloggers from discussing the story. Where's the Times investigation - seems like the story is in their backyard. And that silence you hear from the mainstream press right now? The GOP is going to "play the refs" and jump all over the media for not reporting or investigating this story. The media will eventually break down and do what they do - saturate us with the story they missed just to prove how unbiased they really are.
Lauren and I are organizing the information we've found just by doing some internet research ourselves and for what it's worth, we'll posting it on my blog at Stranahan.com. If you're part of the progressive blogosphere, don't put your head in the sand and hope this goes away because I don't think it will. Don't leave the reporting to Fox and the tabloids. Investigate it yourself. Talk about it, write about it. Disagree or agree but don't just dismiss it because there's too much to just dismiss. If Edwards made a series of personal errors here, at least it should be his friends and allies who help him transition into the next phase of his life. Please make me wrong on this...there's too much at stake.

Chinese citizens must turn in a written application to police while foreigners must submit an application to the border entry-exit administration.
Police will inform applicants whether they received approval at the latest two days before the protest, he said. If they don’t hear from the police, that can be taken as approval, Liu said.
As a Chinese citizen, all you need to do to protest is simply give them all of your personal information ahead of time, so they know where to find you and your family when the Olympic crowds leave. Sounds totally reasonable.
John Perr notes this pledge from Bush:
So when I put my hand on the Bible, I will swear to not only uphold the laws of our land, I will swear to uphold the honor and dignity of the office to which I have been elected, so help me God.
In the speech, Bush also said, “A generation shaped by Vietnam must remember the lessons of Vietnam: When America uses force in the world, the cause must be just, the goal must be clear, and the victory must be overwhelming.” (The picture on the right is of Bush shaking hands with McCain at the conclusion of the 2000 RNC Convention.)

"Dissent Is Not Disloyalty" has been a popular slogan to quickly explain to people who progressives can hate the war but love the country. I'm reminded of that slogan as I think about the reactions I've gotten to my writing about the John Edwards scandal.
As a long standing member of the DKos community, this hasn't been a fun subject for me to write about. I realized when I wrote my initial story - also cross posted on the Huffington Post - that I was ahead of the curve on the story. I'd reached some conclusions that few other progressives seemed to have reached at the time. I could tell, however, that in the fullness of time the facts would bear out my conclusions so I took a deep breath and wrote as carefully and honestly as I could.
The sheer force of the anger at Kos surprised me. It's as though many here forget that dissent is not disloyalty. I was insulted and cursed. My loyalty was questioned; I was accused of being a concern troll and a GOP plant.
Suddenly, I understood that being ahead of a story meant being in a pretty lonely place.
We aren't going to beat the Republicans by acting like the worst of them. We're also not going to beat them by acting willfully ignorant.
When looking at the Edwards scandal, some people failed to see the difference between a 'rumor' and a direct statements by reporters confirmed by an independent source, even though those may not be sources we like.
I understand that. Looking past one's own personal biases is one of the hardest things to do and the accusations are painful for many people. The implications, especially for the Edwards family, are tragic to think about.
But you can't let your dislike of Fox or the Enquirer blind you and shut your brain and all discussion down. It's wrong when conservatives dismiss the New York Times out of hand and it's wrong when we do it with Fox. Be skeptical, yes -- but be thoughtful.
Unfortunately, the story is taking the path I predicted. If you wanted sources other the Enquirer, you're getting them and nothing they are reporting is good for Edwards. No, there's nothing that settles this once and for all but the very nature of a cover up is that it takes a while for the entire truth to come out. Do a quick Google News search for the past 24 hours and you won't find a thing that makes Edwards' actions any less suspicious.
Please don't mischaracterize my point. I haven't written about moral condemnation or used insults like 'sleazy'. I don't think that way. The very title of my original piece - Say It Ain't So, John - is the discouraged question of a fan, not the angry finger pointing of a zealot. Edwards needs to clear this up so we can get on with the business of forgiving him and moving on. As progressives, we need to rise above the false choice between blind judgment and blind apathy. We're the reality based community, remember? My concern isn't fake and it isn't emotional. It's practical.
Edwards has created a problem in his personal life but he's also created a problem in his professional life. He's hurt the Edwards brand.
The rap against Edwards has always been that he was a 'phony'. Conservatives loved calling him a fake and they'd point to the supposed contradiction of populist getting an expensive haircut.
One of the things that we Edwards fans could always point to in response to that noise was Edwards' relationship with his wife Elizabeth. Who doesn't love Elizabeth Edwards? John Edwards touted his relationship with his wife in interviews and appearances. The Edwards marriage helped us believe in John Edwards - if Elizabeth loved him, he couldn't be a phony, could he?
Edwards has blown that by turning out to be a phony in one of the areas that nobody I knew even questioned. He's acting no better than any deer-caught-in-the-headlight Republican.
Worst of all, he's making chumps out of the people defending him the most.
One unintended consequence of the Edwards cover up is that it forces him to imply that it's his accusers who are the liars. As long as he's working to sustain his illusion of innocence, he'll have no choice but to let those around him lie on his behalf. As more and more hard facts keep coming out, Edwards loyalists will increasingly be defending him sole on the basis of his word. "Edwards said it, I believe it and that settles it" won't turn out to be a better path to the truth.

This is my fourth essay about the ongoing, developing story of the John Edwards primary affair / cover-up scandal. One thing that's come up time and again with some people is the idea that there's no solid evidence of a scandal. As Kos member berryberry pointed out in a comment in my last diary, there's quite a bit of evidence but it's mainly circumstantial.
For die hard Edwards apologists, however, that's not enough - they continue to claim stridently that there's nothing to see here.
Thankfully, we have one piece of irrefutable proof that shows any journalist or reasonable person that there is something to this story that bears further investigation.
On Wednesday, after his speech to the AARP, John Edwards ducked out a side entrance in order to avoid reporter's questions.
That's a fact. It's well sourced -- a dozen reporters were there. Nobody is disputing it. And to anyone covering the story, it's hugely significant for two reasons; it's damning on it's own and it shows a pattern of behavior that gives credence to the National Enquirers reporting.
First point - Edwards is acting how people act when they are hiding something.
Think like a journalist, not a John Edwards supporter. Why do politicians avoid reporters, not issue statements, and duck an issue that multiple news outlets are running down? The answer is - always, in every case - because they have something to hide.
There is a reasonable limit to the amount of times someone should be forced to deal with any issue. However, this isn't a story that's been beaten into the ground. It's fresh and there are new developments since Edward's last real statement in 2007. The NE claims to have caught Edwards at a hotel ten days ago and since then Edwards has yet to give one single statement denying he was there.
What some of my fellow Kossacks apparently want the press to do is to think this way "John Edwards just snuck out a side entrance to avoid my questions - but you know....maybe he's tired and Elizabeth is sick and he's a private citizen...sure he just gave a political speech but I can see why he wouldn't want to answer questions especially since there's nothing to those trashy tabloid rumors."
Edwards could easily issue a terse denial. If the story is true in any way, he could explain. If there's a personal matter with his wife, say so. Mainstream, responsible journalists covering this story want him to go on the record again, after the latest claims by the NE. And that's exactly what they should want.
More importantly, that's exactly what YOU should want and ESPECIALLY if he's innocent. A simple straightforward statement. If there's an explanation, give it - because avoiding reporters only prolongs the story, creates embarrassing headlines and adds to the appearance of guilt.
Second point and just as obvious - by ducking reporters the way he did, Edwards is acting the same way the NE claims he did at the hotel. He sees a reporter and high tails it. He just gave the NE's claims more validity.
You can make excuses for this all day but no journalist can, will, or should. No Kossack should either. To fail to demand even the most basic accountability from Edwards - answer a couple of questions - does everyone a disservice. Even our favorite politicians can't be placed on a pedestal of unaccountability.
Here's berryberry's Evidence Comment - all proof copyright 2008, berryberry
Of course there is evidence, most of which is circumstantial. To put my lawyer hat on for a moment, that does not make it inadmissible. In a court context, all of the following would be admitted into evidence.
1. Mr. Edwards and Ms. Hunter know each other and have shared proximity. Thus, they've had opportunity for conversation.
2. There are eyewitnesses to JRE's visit to Ms Hunter and the child at the Beverly Hilton.
3. A corroborating, disinterested witness places Mr Edwards at the Beverly Hilton, hiding in a restroom and avoiding the NE reporters.
4. The act of visiting alone tends to prove (not disprove) some relationship. (The recklessness of the act (in the absence of a relationship) is more a commentary upon the quality of the evidence.)
5. The witnesses attest (sort of...this is the NE) that they attempted to question JRE. His response was to run and hid in the toilet. This is "guilty conscience" evidence.
6. Aware that this matter is swirling around him, Mr. Edwards was sought by members of the MSM yesterday (at another hotel, ironically) for comment about the NE report. Mr. Edwards evaded the MSM and sought an alternative exit where he would not be seen. Again, any trial attorney would point to this conduct as admissible on the basis that it demonstrates "consciousness of guilt." When asked, Mr Edwards proffered an excuse that he lacked time to respond.
7. There is a child. She has DNA.
It is wishful thinking for those in this forum to ignore this with the an unexamined mantra that there is" no evidence. "
And of course let us not forget the inevitability of a DNA test, an admission by Ms Hunter and an admission by Mr. Edwards. Can there be any doubt that these are on the way?

I'm a fellow Kossack and I've had the odd experience of having my first non-comedy pundit piece on The Huffington Post - Say It Ain't So, John: Why Progrsssives Need To Get In Front Of The john Edwards Affair Rumors - become the most popular blog post on HuffPo in the last couple of days while simultaneously become vilified harshly (and sometimes violently) among the people here.
So, a few quick notes for the Kos community to consider...but if you want to get up to speed on the all accusations and see the supporting materials, the best place I've seen everything laid out so far is on the gossipy blog Deceiver. I wish it were Talking Points Memo or Raw Story but nope; Deceiver is all over it. The writing is snarky but the links and information are all there so when you're done here, go click and read. There's also a good summary by the editor of Wonkette published today.
Now a few random notes...
This Scandal Shows No Sign of Going Away, People Are Interested And Edwards Isn't Doing Anything To Shut It Down
Over 150,000 views of my piece on Huffington Post and right now close to 800 comments. The comments are HuffPo were certainly a lot more civil than the comments here, too. That doesn't mean they agreed; just nobody accusing me of posing as a fake liberal or suggesting that I should die.
I brought this story up because I want it go away. Here's my nightmare scenario -- a long, drawn out scandal that runs from now until right around election day that creates a diversion from a discussion of important issues and slowly siphons off independent or uncommitted voters who become disgusted with the whole process.
Democrats in denial are making it come true. Of course, they accuse me of making it come true by talking about it. I wish it were that simple and I wish my fellow liberals who attacked me realize they are playing in the stereotype of a closed minded, naive yet vicious ideologues that conservatives have had since that scruffy guy in the Meat Is Murder shirt yelled at the them for a half hour at a college party years ago.
The National Enquirer and Fox News Can't Be Dismissed Out Of Hand
The Enquirer and Fox aren't my idea of great sources. That doesn't mean that anything they say can be dismissed just because they said it. Any claims they make need to be examined on a case by case basis.
The latest Enquirer piece is not reporting rumors or things that someone else said. It's not hearsay. It's not hiding behind a source. It's reporters saying that they saw John Edwards with their own eyes in the hotel.
The Fox News story confirming this seems like solid reporting to me. It states facts and names names. Not all the information in the article supports the case that Edwards was there. Nothing denies it, however.
Yes, the guard is anonymous, most likely because times are tough and they don't want to lose their crappy job as a hotel security guard. Anonymous sources are used and accepted in journalism My friend Cliff Schecter reported John McCain calling his wife the c-word, based on three anonymous sources in his book The Real McCain.
I've seen people make statements like "I don't believe Edwards was there because the security guard had to be shown a picture!" and then say "I don't believe anything Fox says!" without realizing the contradiction. You can't have it both ways. That information about the security guard came from Fox News. If Fox isn't a source you can trust at all, then you can't just trust the parts that bolster your case.
As Clinton / Lewinsky Showed, Denials May Be Lies And Can Last A Long Time
I've seen a number of people say "Both Edwards and Hunter denied the affair" as though that ends the debate.
For about six months, both Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky denied that they had any kind of sexual relationship. If it hadn't been for the blue dress, Bill Clinton would still be denying it. In most cases like this, the denials usually last right up until the last second. The worst possible outcome in the Edwards case because the last second coming on November 5th.
The Fuzzy Nature Of The Story Doesn't Make It Any Better For Edwards
In fact, I'd argue that the shady nature of the charges and the proof makes the story more compelling and interesting at this point. John Edward's behavior contributes to this. In the absence of hard information, it's human nature to make stuff up to fill in the gaps in our knowledge. In the 1300 or so comments I've read about my original piece I've heard a lot of theories on every aspect of this story, from the idea the Elizabeth Edwards possibly approved an affair to the notion that Karl Rove planted a John Edwards lookalike. Forget whether the theories are right or wrong. They are interesting and fun to discuss and people will keep batting them around until a clear narrative emerges from the current fog.
The best discussion I've heard about the Edwards affair is from the Slate Gabfest and the standout concept from the discussion is the idea of 'alchemy'. What makes a news story compelling? Why does one murder case remain anonymous and another turn into a media event that lasts for months? There's no one answer but we've all seen stories that grab the press and don't let go. My broad thesis is that it's roughly equivalent to what makes compelling fiction -- some combination of mystery, sex or violence, interesting characters, archetypes, implied moral lessons and a familiarity to the view. That list isn't a recipe, though. There is no recipe because there's that ineffable thing that makes it alchemy and not chemistry.
The quickest way to wreck the alchemy is to get as many facts out in the open as quickly possible. As soon as the mysteries are solved, the theories begin to vanish and we're left with the mundane. This is what I meant by get in front of the story - if you're a Democrat, you should want this story cleared up as soon as possible and the responsibility for that lies with John Edwards.
It's Not 'Just Sex" - It's The Cover-up
In the end, this isn't about judging John Edward's kink or playing holier than thou. It's about the increasingly realistic possibility that John Edwards pursued a reckless course of action while seeking the Democratic nomination for the nation's highest office. If so, that's a serious betrayal of the voters who supported Edwards or considered voting for him and frankly of the entire Democratic Party.
