Tim Scott Pledges More Obstructionism

Rep. Tim Scott (R-SC) pledges more obstruction if Obama reelected with a GOP majority in the House. Isn't that nice. More bullshit from a bullshit artist.

What about the Georgetown port? Oh yeah, you don't represent that anymore.

Time for a little nation-building at home, Obama
declares in weekly address

No one who fights for this country should have to fight for a job or a roof over their head when they come home.

President Obama, riffing off his remarks at Fort Bliss, Texas, yesterday, discussed in this morning's weekly address the importance of treating our veterans right as they return home?and he also used the topic to call for an investment reminiscent of New Deal and post-World War II fiscal strategies:

My grandfather?s generation came back from World War II and helped form the backbone of the greatest middle-class in history. They helped this country come back stronger than before. Today?s veterans have the skills, the discipline, and the leadership skills to do the exact same thing?and it?s our job to give them that chance.
What does that mean, exactly? Well .. roads and bridges and education and jobs and a thriving economy.
It?s time to build a nation that lives up to the ideals that so many Americans have fought for?a nation where they can realize the dream they sacrificed to protect. We need to rebuild our roads and runways and ports. We need to lay broadband lines across this country and put our veterans back to work as cops and firefighters in communities that need them. And we need to come together to make America a place where hard work is rewarded and anyone willing to put in the effort can make it if they try.

That?s how we can honor our troops. That?s the welcome home they?ve earned.

It's a nicely packaged message both for veterans and peopel still struggling in the current economy, and not a bad way to head into next week's Democratic National Convention.

Bill Maher Takes Apart Dinesh DSouza Over His

Bill Maher Takes Apart Dinesh D?Souza Over His Fearmongering Film

Click here to view this media

Author and fearmongering filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza appeared on this Friday evening's Real Time with Bill Maher and had his latest film, 2016: Obama?s America, and the justifications for his depiction of President Obama taken apart one by one by Maher.

Whether it was D'Souza pretending that President Obama didn't reach out to Republicans on their health care bill, when as Maher rightfully pointed out, it was Bob Dole's plan from the '90's, trying to blame the President for the gridlock in Washington rather than Republican obstruction designed to make sure President Obama is not reelected, to pretending that President Obama did anything much differently than other presidents when it came to stimulus, regulating industry or that he's somehow anti-capitalist, D'Souza just was no match for Maher.

We've been down this road before here at C&L with a critique of D'Souza's work, so anyone not already familiar with him might want to go back and read this post -- Doing the Right Wing Limbo ? How Low Can They Go?.

Maher did a pretty good job with D'Souza if he's going to allow someone like him who traffics in lies on his show in the first place. I still think the most brutal interview I've seen with him was Cenk Uygur from earlier this month which you can watch here -- Cenk Uygur Destroys Anti-Obama Author Dinesh D?Souza.

Romney To Homeless Hurricane Victim: Go Home

Yesterday, GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney visited Louisiana, where much of the state was flooded due to Hurricane Issac. While visiting the Pelican State, however, Romney had some odd advice for one victim of the hurricane who had lost her home due to the flooding. According to Jodie Chiarello, a suddenly homeless resident of the [...]

Clint, God Is Not On The Republicans' Side -- He
Hates Stupid People

Hard-core film buffs may recognize the title of this post as a paraphrase of a line that "Blondie" (Clint Eastwood) speaks to "Tucco" (Eli Wallach) in the quintessential spaghetti Western The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1967).

As an actor, Clint was OK, but always a bit more archetype than character, sort of like John Wayne was to an older and less-hip audience. As a director, he blossomed into a world-class auteur, aided by the tutelage of cinematic masters like Sergio Leone and Don Siegel.

It was tragi-comic to see an 82-year-old Eastwood make a doddering fool of himself before a prime-time TV audience Thursday night at the Republican National Convention.

For one thing, I thought Clint had learned a few things about his "friends" on the right. His reaction to having right-wing critics like Michael Medved spray bladder juice all over his 2004 boxing masterpiece Million Dollar Baby was angry and defiant. The film seemed, in the view of right wingers, to support euthanasia. Clint seemed at the time to have distanced himself at least somewhat from the political right, with his obvious and apolitical question about any script: Is it a good story?

But he's always been a fiscal conservative, and was a Republican as mayor of Carmel, Calif. Old habits die hard.

Back to the post title -- God may not be on the Republicans' side, but from what one can tell, He, She or It often doesn't seem to be on ANYBODY'S side. The deity, presuming that one exists, doesn't usually intervene in human affairs. Jews and other victimized groups were not spared holocausts, and black people were not rescued from slavery, at least not for centuries.

Humans are mostly left to their own devices. They can do things to make the world a better place -- or they can make it a hell on Earth, which they quite regularly accomplish. It's often sad to watch, but that's what free will is all about.

God didn't even stop Il Doofus (Bush 43) from being president for eight long years, declining to step in as apparent election fraud was committed. He, She or It didn't stop 1.4 million Iraqis from being killed over official lies.

And, perish the thought, He, She or It may not prevent Slick Willard Scumney and Paul "Ayn" Ryan from being "elected" to the Nos. 1 and 2 offices in the land. Atheists and agnostics seem to expect the deity to intervene in human affairs, but that seldom happens. We can foolishly and avariciously screw things up just as much as we please -- I learned that from watching "Blondie" on the Big Screen when I was just a lad of 11. It's up to us.

He, She or It may hate stupid people -- but that's never stopped them before.

OFA Rejects Precinct Event

I received this e-mail from a concerned activist this morning:

OFA is losing a lot of people down here for stuff like this, see the email below. I have a door to door canvass and voter registration next Saturday, conducted in cooperation with the Bobby Rose Campaign.   We'll be focusing on volunteer and donor activation in I'On and Voter registration and volunteer activation in Greenhill, as well as basic voting rights education to head off voter suppression efforts.  Evidently this isn't good enough for OFA.
I understand their emphasis is on North Carolina but if they bleed the Democratic party to death here with junk like this, there won't be anyone to come back to in four years.  It also means Republicans will be free to turn SC into a resource mine to support their efforts in NC and Florida.  Obviously a functional Democratic party is necessary in SC to keep it from being fully exploited as a right wing power base.
I know you are busy with the convention, but that is the time to make a correction.  Hope you have a good time up there.  I've got court next week.
