Iraq Papers Wed: Arab-Kurdish Tensions

Tensions between the Iraqi Army and the Kurdish Peshmerga in the Khanqeen area (north of Baghdad) led to popular demonstrations, which, according to Az-Zaman, "forced Maliki's forces to withdraw from Khanqeen." Oil-rich Khanqeen borders the Kurdistan Region and is inhabited by both Arabs and Kurds, it is also one of the districts that are considered "disputed territories" with the Kurdistan Regional Government demanding to affiliate the area with Kurdistan.
